You can create writing, illustrations, and designs without generative AI by doing the work yourself, using conventional creative software, working with physical materials, or commissioning a human professional. The best fit depends on the task: Krita is for digital painting, Inkscape is for vector graphics, and neither replaces an author, editor, illustrator, or layout specialist.
What can you use instead of generative AI?
There is no single substitute for every creative task. Start by deciding what you need to make and whether you want to create it yourself or hire someone. Then choose a human-led process, a non-generative tool suited to the work, or a combination of both.

- Writing: develop the ideas, draft and revise the text yourself; bring in a human editor or proofreader if useful.
- Illustration: draw or paint by hand, paint digitally, or commission an illustrator.
- Graphic design: sketch concepts, then use a vector editor or another appropriate design tool to produce final artwork.
How to write without generative AI
An author-led workflow puts the writer in charge of the ideas and expression: outline or otherwise organize the material, write a draft, revise it, and check factual claims. A human editor or proofreader can help with clarity, structure, and errors, but this is an editorial approach—not a guarantee of a particular quality or a result established by comparative testing.

For children’s books, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) says it opposes text-prompted generative AI in writing, illustrating, translating, and other aspects of creation. It also says traditional publishing standards do not encourage or include GenAI-created text, translations, or illustrations in books. That is SCBWI’s stated position, not a rule that applies to every publisher or market. Read SCBWI’s statement.

Draw or paint by hand

The project describes it as a professional painting program and lists features including brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilizers, and animation tools. Commission an illustrator
A human illustrator may be a good choice when a project needs a particular subject, interpretation, or visual treatment. Before work starts, agree on the scope, schedule, budget, usage rights, and deliverables. Costs and outcomes vary; the available evidence does not establish typical commission prices or guarantee a specific result.

How to choose an approach
- Name the output. Decide whether you need prose, a painted image, vector artwork, or a designed layout. A tool suited to one may not suit another.
- Choose who will make it. If you want direct control and have time to learn, use a human-led process. If the project needs a specific visual treatment or specialist expertise, consider commissioning a professional.
- Check the handoff. Confirm required file formats, deliverables, usage rights, and collaboration needs before choosing software or hiring someone.
- Set practical constraints. Compare budget, learning curve, physical versus digital workflow, and the time available. The tools described here are free; commissioned work has project-specific terms.
Copyright and ethical questions are not the same everywhere
The U.S. Copyright Office’s Part 2 report, published January 29, 2025, says that generative AI outputs can be protected by copyright only when a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements. Merely providing prompts is not enough; human-authored material, creative arrangement, or modifications can matter. This summarizes the Office’s analysis of U.S. copyright law, not a statement of law worldwide. Read the Copyright Office’s AI report index.

Legal questions are only one part of evaluating generative AI. Creative Commons notes that licensing tools may address some legal uncertainty without resolving broader concerns such as privacy, consent, bias, economic impacts, access, and control. WIPO’s 2024 publication offers organizations principles and a checklist for considering intellectual-property risks and safeguards when adopting generative AI. These sources frame issues to consider; they do not establish that all generative AI use is unlawful or unethical. Creative Commons on AI and the commons; WIPO’s 2024 publication.
