If you want the newest Facebook posts first, open the Feeds tab rather than Home. Feeds shows recent posts from the Facebook sources you choose; Home remains a ranked, recommendation-heavy stream. If you want a social network built around chronological timelines, Mastodon is the clearest fit. Bluesky’s Following feed is another chronological option, with custom feeds and Discover available when you want algorithmic discovery. Mastodon account and hashtag pages can also expose public RSS feeds for reading updates in an RSS app.
What to use, at a glance
| Option | How posts are ordered | What you see | Discovery controls | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook Feeds / Most Recent | Newest posts first within the selected Facebook sources | Friends, Pages, groups and available favorites | Home remains ranked and recommended | You must switch to Feeds; labels and navigation can change |
| Mastodon home timeline | Chronological statuses | Accounts you follow, with optional followed hashtags | Local and federated timelines, plus hashtags | Your server choice affects the experience |
| Bluesky Following | Chronological posts from followed accounts | Accounts you follow | Custom feeds and Discover add selectable algorithms | Feed behavior and settings continue to evolve |
| RSS for Mastodon accounts or tags | Your RSS application polls and displays items in date order | Public account or tag feeds exposed by Mastodon | Folders, filters and sorting supplied by your RSS app | It does not include private or in-app-only content |
Choose Facebook Feeds when your communities and contacts are already there. Choose Mastodon when reverse chronology should be the network’s default behavior. Choose Bluesky when you want a chronological following stream but also want to switch among recommendation feeds. Add RSS when you want to read public Mastodon updates outside a social app.

Facebook: use Feeds instead of Home
What the Feeds tab does
Meta introduced Feeds in 2022 as a destination for the most recent posts from friends, Pages and groups. The tab is designed for people who want to see updates from selected Facebook sources without the recommendation ranking used on Home. Favorites can also be included where the current Facebook interface makes them available.

One-click scans. No signup required.
The important distinction is that Feeds is a separate destination, not a permanent change to Facebook’s main surface. Home continues to function as a discovery feed. It can rank posts, suggest accounts or Pages, and insert recommended material. Opening Home later does not mean Facebook has converted your account to a chronological mode; you need to return to Feeds when order matters.

Most Recent and the Feed Filter Bar
Meta’s 2021 description of the Feed Filter Bar called Most Recent a chronological view with the newest posts first. In current versions, the wording and location may differ, but the principle is the same: select the recent-posts view from Facebook’s feed controls rather than relying on Home.
How to use it
- Open Facebook in the web interface or mobile app.
- Select Feeds from the navigation. If the interface presents a feed selector or filter bar, choose Most Recent or the equivalent recent-posts label.
- Choose the source group you need, such as friends, Pages, groups or favorites, if those filters are shown.
- Refresh or revisit Feeds when you want new items. Treat Home as a separate, ranked destination.
Because Facebook changes navigation by device, account and region, a label may move or be renamed. Look for Feeds, Most Recent or a feed-filter control rather than assuming the Home tab is chronological.
What Facebook Feeds cannot guarantee
- It does not make Home chronological.
- It only covers posts available from the Facebook sources selected in the service; it is not a complete export of every update from every connection.
- It is still dependent on Facebook’s interface and account rules. A future redesign can change the entry point.
For someone who simply wants to remain on Facebook, Feeds is the fastest practical fix. It avoids moving contacts and groups, but it does not provide the portability or platform independence of an RSS workflow.
Mastodon: a network designed around chronological timelines
How the home timeline works
Mastodon’s documentation describes timelines that return statuses in chronological order. The home timeline is built primarily from accounts you follow on your server and elsewhere in the federated network. Newer statuses appear after older ones rather than being rearranged into a popularity ranking.
This model makes Mastodon the strongest alternative when “posts in order” is the central requirement. The trade-off is that chronology does not create a complete public firehose. Your home timeline reflects whom you follow and what those accounts publish.

Following hashtags and broadening the stream
Following accounts alone can leave gaps, especially when a topic is active but no single account covers it consistently. Mastodon supports following hashtags, allowing tagged public posts to enter your timeline alongside posts from accounts. Hashtags therefore act as an explicit discovery control: you decide the subject, instead of receiving an opaque recommendation score.
Local and federated timelines
Many Mastodon servers expose a local timeline containing activity from accounts on that server and a federated timeline containing posts known through connected servers. These views are useful for discovery, but they are not the same as your personal home timeline. Local and federated streams can be busy, uneven and dependent on server connections. Use them when you want to explore; use Home when you want the predictable list of accounts you follow.
Why the server matters
Mastodon is a federation of independently operated servers rather than one centrally hosted database. Your server influences moderation rules, onboarding, local culture, uptime and which communities are easiest to discover. You can communicate across servers, but the account’s home server remains an important part of the experience.
- Read a server’s rules and moderation policy before joining.
- Consider whether its topic or geographic focus matches the communities you want to follow.
- Keep in mind that server administrators control local policies and retention practices.
This server model is the main conceptual difference from Facebook and Bluesky. Chronological ordering is straightforward, but account portability and discovery involve more than choosing a setting in one company’s app.
Reading Mastodon through RSS
What Mastodon exposes
Mastodon documentation states that every account and tag page provides an RSS feed for syndication onto other platforms. That means a public account page or public hashtag page can be followed from a compatible RSS reader without keeping the Mastodon interface open.

Setup procedure
- Open the public Mastodon account or hashtag page you want to monitor.
- Locate the page’s RSS feed link or RSS icon.
- Copy that feed address into your RSS reader.
- Organize subscriptions into folders, apply the reader’s filters, and choose its refresh interval.
- Open the original Mastodon post when you need replies, media context or conversation controls.
The RSS reader now controls polling and presentation. Depending on the application, it may show items newest first, mark read status consistently across devices, and let you combine several accounts or tags in one folder.
RSS boundaries
RSS is a portability layer for public feeds, not a mirror of a Mastodon account. Private posts, follower-only updates, direct messages and material visible only after signing in are not replaced by an RSS subscription. Replies may also be less convenient to follow than they are in the Mastodon interface, and an RSS application cannot perform every social action.
Use RSS when the primary job is monitoring public updates in a controlled reading environment. Return to Mastodon for posting, replying, moderation actions and conversations that depend on account context.
Bluesky: chronological Following with optional algorithms
The Following feed
Bluesky’s standard Following feed is the chronological choice for posts from accounts you follow. It is the closest Bluesky equivalent to a simple reverse-chronological timeline: follow an account, and its posts enter the following stream without requiring a separate recommendation feed.
Bluesky’s 2023 discussion of “algorithmic choice” framed feeds as a marketplace of composable algorithms. In practical terms, you can keep Following as your baseline and switch to other feeds when you want a topic, interest or recommendation layer.

Custom feeds and Discover
Custom feeds can collect posts according to a chosen subject or ranking method. Discover provides a recommendation-oriented view. These options are useful when you want to find accounts beyond your current follows, but they are deliberately different from Following. If a post appears in Discover or a custom feed, do not assume it represents chronological activity from everyone you follow.
When Bluesky is the better fit
- You want a single service with a clear chronological following stream.
- You want to experiment with different feed algorithms without abandoning that stream.
- You prefer one account system rather than selecting a Mastodon server.
Bluesky’s user base expanded rapidly after the 2024 U.S. election; the Associated Press reported more than one million new users in the following week. That figure indicates adoption at a particular moment, not the quality or completeness of its chronological feed. A larger network can make Following more useful, but it can also mean more posts to manage.

Stay on Facebook when your relationships are the priority
Use Feeds or Most Recent if your essential groups, family, Pages and event communities already operate on Facebook. You get the least disruption and can switch back to Home for recommendations. The cost is dependence on a changing interface and the need to remember that Feeds is a separate destination.
Choose Mastodon when chronology should be the default
Mastodon suits readers who want a timeline centered on followed accounts, explicit hashtag following and server-level communities. It requires learning the server model and accepting that discovery differs from a single-company platform.

Best Value
Add RSS when you want separation from social apps
RSS works best for a focused set of public Mastodon accounts or tags. It gives you reader-controlled organization and polling, but it cannot reproduce private posts or every interaction inside the network.
Practical setup playbooks
Facebook checklist
- Find the Feeds entry in the current navigation.
- Open the friends, Pages, groups or favorites view you need.
- Use Most Recent if Facebook presents it as a separate filter.
- Bookmark or pin the Feeds destination if your browser or device allows it.
- When posts look recommended or out of order, check that you have not returned to Home.
Mastodon checklist
- Select a server whose rules, moderation approach and community match your needs.
- Create an account and follow people you already know or discover through server and hashtag views.
- Follow relevant hashtags when a topic matters independently of specific accounts.
- Read the home timeline for chronological updates; use local or federated timelines only for broader discovery.
- Save public account or tag RSS feeds in your reader if you want an external reading workflow.
Bluesky checklist
- Follow the accounts whose posts you want in your primary stream.
- Use Following as the default chronological view.
- Add custom feeds for specific subjects only when you want a different selection rule.
- Open Discover for recommendations, then return to Following for ordered reading.
RSS checklist
- Confirm that the Mastodon account or tag is public.
- Copy its RSS link from the page rather than guessing a feed address.
- Set a refresh interval that fits how quickly you need updates.
- Use folders or filters to separate accounts, topics and high-volume tags.
- Open the source post for replies, media, privacy-restricted context or actions unavailable in RSS.
Common problems and fixes
“Facebook is still showing recommendations”
You are probably viewing Home or a recommendation surface. Return to Feeds and select the recent-posts option if it is offered. If the label is missing, look for a feed selector or filter bar; Facebook’s navigation is not identical across devices.
“My Mastodon timeline is chronological but misses important posts”
Chronology only orders the statuses available to your account. Follow the missing accounts, follow relevant hashtags, or use local and federated timelines for discovery. Check whether an account posts from another server or restricts visibility.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“Mastodon RSS is not showing everything”
Verify that you subscribed to the correct public account or tag feed. RSS does not include private, follower-only or direct-message content, and it is not a substitute for the in-app conversation view.
“Bluesky Following looks quiet”
A chronological feed cannot add activity from accounts you do not follow. Follow more relevant accounts, then use custom feeds or Discover when you need broader discovery. Keep those feeds separate from Following so you know which ordering rule you are reading.
“I want one chronological stream from every service”
There is no universal feed that combines all private and in-app social activity. RSS can aggregate public Mastodon feeds, while Facebook Feeds and Bluesky Following remain inside their respective services. A combined reader therefore has coverage limits as well as technical ones.
Bottom line
For an immediate Facebook-only solution, open Feeds and choose Most Recent when available; do not expect Home to stay chronological. For a platform whose normal timeline is ordered by time, Mastodon is the most direct match, with followed hashtags and public RSS feeds extending control beyond the app. Bluesky’s Following feed offers the same chronological core while letting you opt into custom algorithms and Discover. The right choice depends on whether you value existing Facebook relationships, a server-based network, selectable feed algorithms or reader-controlled RSS portability.
