If you need stablecoin liquidity without borrowing GHO, the closest alternatives are borrowing another supported stablecoin on Aave or borrowing against collateral on a different lending venue, such as Morpho. If you already hold GHO, Aave’s Stability Module may let you exchange it for an approved stablecoin—but that is a conversion, not a loan. The right route depends on the network, available markets, collateral terms, liquidity, and current borrowing costs.
What counts as an alternative to borrowing GHO?
There are three materially different routes. You can keep Aave as the venue and change the borrowed asset; change both the venue and its lending-market design; or exchange GHO you already hold for another token. Only the first two are borrowing. Aave’s FAQ names DAI, USDC, and USDT as examples of USD-pegged stablecoins, but that does not mean each is borrowable in every Aave market or network. Check the specific deployment and asset before supplying collateral.

- Another stablecoin on Aave: Changes the debt asset while retaining Aave’s collateralized borrowing model.
- Another lending venue: Changes the protocol and potentially how the lending market and liquidation rules are structured.
- GHO Stability Module: Exchanges existing GHO for a governance-approved stablecoin; it does not provide collateralized credit.
How borrowing GHO on Aave works
Aave describes GHO as a decentralized, overcollateralized stablecoin designed to maintain a USD peg. In the Aave V3 Ethereum market, eligible supplied collateral supports GHO borrowing. GHO is minted through a facilitator rather than borrowed from an ordinary pool of GHO suppliers, so the facilitator’s capacity and collateral requirements constrain borrowing. See Aave’s GHO documentation and facilitator explanation.

The borrower flow is still collateralized debt: supply eligible collateral, borrow, then repay principal plus accrued interest. Aave says interest from GHO borrowing is redirected to the Aave DAO treasury; do not assume other stablecoin markets or protocols distribute borrowing revenue the same way. Rates depend on supply and demand as well as protocol parameters, as Aave explains in its FAQ.

Borrowing does not remove price risk. If collateral value falls or debt rises relative to collateral, a position can become eligible for liquidation. Aave’s V3 overview describes liquidation eligibility when the health factor falls below one. A stablecoin’s intended peg is also not a guarantee that it will always trade at exactly one dollar.
Compare the main routes
| Route | What changes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Borrow another stablecoin on Aave | The debt asset changes; the Aave borrowing venue remains. | Asset and network support, current rate and available liquidity, collateral eligibility, LTV and liquidation threshold, market caps, and the risk of owing a different token than GHO. |
| Borrow through another venue, such as Morpho | Both the venue and market construction may change. | Exact collateral-and-loan-asset pair, network, LLTV, rate and liquidity, market or curator risks, and liquidation mechanics. |
| Exchange GHO through the Stability Module | You exchange GHO you already own instead of borrowing. | Whether the desired token is currently approved, capacity, pricing strategy, and applicable terms. |
Aave’s V3 overview explains collateralized borrowing and health-factor liquidations. Morpho Blue instead uses isolated markets pairing a collateral asset with a loan asset. Each market has its own LLTV, and a borrower can be liquidated if the position breaches that limit. See Morpho’s overview and its Morpho Blue market explanation.

When the Stability Module may fit
If you already have GHO and want a different stablecoin, Aave’s Stability Module is a conversion route to governance-approved assets. Aave describes its initial pricing implementation as a fixed 1:1 strategy, while noting that the framework can adapt through governance. That description is not a guarantee of current availability, capacity, or execution terms. Check the module’s currently accepted assets and conditions before relying on it. It does not create a collateralized loan or give you additional liquidity beyond the GHO you exchange.

How to choose and verify a route
- Decide whether you need a loan or a conversion. If you need to obtain assets against collateral, compare borrowing markets. If you already hold GHO and only want to change tokens, check the Stability Module.
- Confirm the exact network and market. Verify that the asset is borrowable—not merely listed or supported as collateral—in the deployment you intend to use.
- Compare terms for your position. Check the live rate, available liquidity, collateral rules, liquidation threshold or LLTV, and any market caps. For a fair rate comparison, use the same timestamp, chain, borrow size, collateral profile, treatment of incentives, and transaction costs.
- Assess risks beyond the displayed rate. Consider collateral volatility, stablecoin backing and issuer risks, market liquidity, chain or bridge exposure, governance changes, and liquidation mechanics. The documentation cited here does not establish a blanket safety ranking among these routes.
- Recheck before borrowing. Market availability, rates, accepted tokens, and protocol parameters can change. A comparison from another date or deployment may not describe the position you can open now.
Spark’s lending-platform comparison lists Aave, Compound, Morpho, Spark, Nexo, and Ledn across comparison dimensions. That listing does not establish that the services are equivalent, that rates are current or comparable, or that every platform offers the same onchain borrowing model. Check the specific product and whether it is custodial or onchain before using it as a substitute.
