If your priority is eliminating conventional fan noise, a passively cooled mini PC is the closest alternative to a fanless PC. For higher sustained performance or more flexibility, consider a quiet actively cooled desktop or a specialist custom build—but those systems can still make noise. Choose by workload, thermal limits, size, ports and upgrade needs, not by “silent” or “fanless” wording alone.
What counts as an alternative to a fanless PC?
“Fanless” and “quiet” describe different outcomes. A fanless system avoids conventional cooling fans; a quiet computer may use fans designed or configured to run less audibly. Some systems use active cooling without conventional fans, so check how a particular model moves heat rather than relying on its label.

Passively cooled mini PC
This is the closest match when the goal is to remove fan noise. With no conventional cooling fan, there is no fan noise, but passive cooling still has thermal limits: the processor and chassis must be able to dissipate heat for the work you expect to do. ASUS describes its NUC 14 Essential Fanless as a passively cooled mini PC. ASUS NUC 14 Essential Fanless
Passively cooled desktop
A desktop does not have to sit on the desk. ARCTIC describes its Senza as a passively cooled under-desk PC based on AMD Ryzen 5000-series processors with integrated Radeon graphics. This format may suit someone who wants passive cooling while keeping the computer out of sight; check the exact configuration and connections against your needs. ARCTIC Senza

Quiet actively cooled desktop
Larger, slower fans can move air while running more quietly than small, fast fans, but they do not make a computer fanless. The general design approach is sound, but a 2006 article is not a current product recommendation or a basis for comparing present-day systems. Specialist custom system
A custom quiet or passively cooled build may be worth considering if off-the-shelf mini PCs do not meet your workload, case, port or upgrade requirements. Silent PC advertises custom quiet-PC solutions and passively cooled systems; treat this as a builder category to investigate rather than a comparative endorsement. Silent PC

Active cooling without conventional fans
Some products use a different active-cooling method. ZOTAC describes the ZBOX pico PI430AJ as using Frore’s AirJet technology and having no fans or other moving parts. That is distinct from natural-convection passive cooling, even though it also avoids conventional fans. ZOTAC ZBOX pico PI430AJ
How to choose the right kind of quiet computer
- Start with the workload. Decide whether the machine will mainly handle office tasks, media playback or light desktop work, or must sustain demanding computation. “Fanless” and “quiet” do not establish performance; assess the exact processor and system for the work you need.
- Check thermal limits and operating conditions. Look up the exact model’s processor power limits and permitted ambient temperature. For example, ASUS lists CPU support up to 15 watts and operation in ambient temperatures up to 50°C for the PL64. Those are PL64-specific manufacturer specifications, not general limits for fanless PCs. ASUS PL64 specifications
- Define what “quiet” means for you. If you need no conventional fan, exclude systems that rely on fans even if they are designed to run quietly. If some fan noise is acceptable, an actively cooled desktop may offer another option. Perceived noise depends partly on listening distance and room conditions, and available figures here do not provide a consistent cross-product comparison.
- Match the form factor and connections to your setup. Compare desk footprint or under-desk placement, display and network connections, and every port your work requires. Check the current configuration rather than assuming all variants of a product have the same connections.
- Verify upgrade and service options. Memory and storage upgrade paths vary by product and configuration. Confirm what can be replaced or expanded on the exact model before buying.
How to interpret noise and temperature claims
Noise figures are useful only when their measurement conditions are comparable. A decibel value without a common test load, microphone distance, room noise floor and measurement method cannot establish which of several systems is quieter. Manufacturer-attributed figures should also be identified as claims, not independent lab results.

Search for a fanless mini PC if avoiding conventional fan noise is the main requirement. ASUS NUC 14 Essential Fanless, ARCTIC Senza and ZOTAC ZBOX pico PI430AJ illustrate different approaches: passive mini-PC cooling, a passively cooled under-desk desktop, and active AirJet cooling without conventional fans. Their manufacturer descriptions do not establish a like-for-like performance or acoustic ranking. Check current availability, exact configurations and specifications before choosing.
