All Explorer Maps in Minecraft: Types and Where to Find Them

Find Minecraft explorer maps through cartographers, shipwrecks, underwater ruins, and—in Java 26.3 Snapshot 7—some Abandoned Camps. Availability depends on version and edition.

Explorer maps in Minecraft can point to structures, villages, buried treasure, and— in Java 26.3 Snapshot 7—other Abandoned Camps. The map you can obtain depends on your edition, version, and sometimes a cartographer’s biome and profession level. The newer camp maps and item names described here are Java snapshot changes, not universal features.

Explorer map types and where to get them

The table separates established acquisition routes from version-specific additions. A map’s destination may be nearby, but a trade is not always guaranteed.

Map destination Acquisition route Edition or version notes
Ocean Monument Trade with a cartographer villager. Traditional explorer-map route; trade level and item name vary by version. In Java 25w07a’s trade rebalance, this map is available at Journeyman level.
Woodland Mansion Trade with a cartographer villager. Traditional explorer-map route; in Java 25w07a’s trade rebalance, a Woodland Mansion map is guaranteed at Master level.
Trial Chambers Level a cartographer to Journeyman for an opportunity to trade for a map. Java and Bedrock 1.21 guidance describes a possible, not guaranteed, trade. Java 25w07a’s trade rebalance also lists it at Journeyman level.
Villages in different biomes Trade with cartographers; the villager’s biome affects which maps are offered at Apprentice level in the Java 25w07a trade rebalance. Java 25w07a snapshot trade changes. The listed destinations include Desert, Plains, Savanna, Snowy, and Taiga villages.
Buried Treasure Search shipwrecks and underwater ruins for a map. Traditional route. The map marks treasure with a red X.
Abandoned Camps and additional structures Find maps in some Abandoned Camps. Java 26.3 Snapshot 7. Named map destinations include camps in Bamboo Jungle, Cherry Grove, Birch Forest, Dappled Forest, Flower Forest, Pale Garden, Swamp, and Windswept Forest, as well as Ancient City, Trial Chambers, Mineshaft, Desert Pyramid, Jungle Pyramid, Warm Ocean Ruins, and Woodland Mansion. The notes do not specify a guaranteed map in any particular camp.

For the traditional cartographer route, Mojang’s general guide describes explorer maps as cartographer trades and gives the Journeyman cartographer as the easiest way to get one. The names and trade details in older guidance may not match newer versions. Mojang’s explorer-map guide

How cartographer trades vary

Do not assume every cartographer sells every map. The Java 25w07a trade rebalance changes the selection: a villager’s biome determines which village or structure maps may appear at Apprentice level, while Trial Chamber and Ocean Monument maps are listed at Journeyman level and a Woodland Mansion map is guaranteed at Master level in that snapshot. These details apply only if the player’s version and world settings use that trade rebalance. Java 25w07a snapshot notes

For Trial Chambers specifically, Java and Bedrock 1.21 guidance says a Journeyman cartographer has an opportunity to offer a Trial Explorer Map pointing to a nearby chamber; it is not a guaranteed trade. Java 1.21 guidance Bedrock 1.21 guidance

What Java 26.3 changes—and what it does not

Java 26.3’s map-item list uses more consistent names for several established maps, including Ocean Monument Map, Woodland Mansion Map, Buried Trial Chambers Map, Jungle Pyramid Map, and Swamp Hut Map. Its list also includes village maps, Buried Treasure Map, Buried Ancient City Map, Buried Mineshaft Map, Desert Pyramid Map, Abandoned Camp Map, and Warm Ocean Ruins Map. These are Java 26.3 item names; do not assume they apply to other editions or stable releases. Java 26.3 notes

Java 26.3 Snapshot 7 separately describes maps found in Abandoned Camps, including maps to other camps in specified biomes and to several structures. Those snapshot notes do not give a chest-by-chest loot table, so they establish that such maps are found in some camps—not that a particular camp guarantees a particular map. Older explorer maps in existing worlds convert to matching new item types when loaded, and explorer maps can be cloned in a crafting table. Snapshot 7 also changes map player icons to show the direction the player is facing. Java 26.3 Snapshot 7 notes

How to read an explorer map

  • Structure locations appear as small icons; buried treasure is marked with a red X.
  • If your player marker is on the edge of the map, you are outside the region shown. Travel toward the mapped area until the marker moves onto the map.
  • In Java 26.3 Snapshot 7, the player icon indicates the direction you are facing.

Map behavior to know before changing versions

Java 26.3 notes say explorer maps and buried treasure maps can no longer be zoomed out in a crafting table or cartography table, while the same notes list map cloning. These are version-specific changes, not a statement about every edition or release. Java 26.3 notes
