Timing problems are fixed by shifting cues. Segmentation problems appear when one language splits a sentence across several cues while the other keeps it whole, so cue numbers and line breaks will not line up no matter how well the timing is corrected. Once you know which problem you have, correct the timing, match the sentences by meaning, check each pair against the video, and export in a format your player supports.
Syncing and sentence alignment are different jobs
Searches such as “align subtitles,” “how to align subtitles,” and “merge two subtitle files” usually describe one of two tasks. The first is timing correction: the translated file appears a second early or late, or drifts further off as the film goes on. The second is sentence alignment: each language has its own cue breaks, so a single sentence in English may map to two cues in Spanish, or one long Spanish cue may hold two English sentences. Many people need both, and the order matters. Fix the timing first, because a sentence match made against cues that are displaced by three seconds will look correct in the editor and wrong on screen.

Step 1: Diagnose the timing before editing any text
Play the video and compare the opening, middle, and closing cues of each file against the spoken audio. Write down the offset at each point. The pattern tells you which correction to use.
A consistent offset: apply a global shift
If every cue is displaced by about the same amount, shift the whole file. Subtitle Edit’s documentation lists global time adjustment as a core timing feature. This is the cheapest fix and should be tried first, because it leaves the cue structure untouched.

An offset that changes across the file: use reference points or segment-level correction
If the gap widens or narrows as the film progresses, a single shift cannot fit both the start and the end. Subtitle Edit’s documentation describes point sync, and point sync via another subtitle, which lets you anchor specific cues to known times in a reference file. Subaligner 0.3.4 offers two modes: a single-stage alignment that shifts all segments globally, and a dual-stage method that shifts segments individually and can stretch them. The dual-stage approach is the one to use for drift, but it changes more of the file, so review the result near several points afterward.
Why an overlap merge is not a sentence match
Subtitle Edit’s merge tool pairs cues from two independent files when they overlap in time, even if their start and end times do not match exactly. That gives you a combined bilingual track quickly. It does not establish that the two paired cues say the same thing. A short English cue can overlap a Spanish cue that continues into the next English cue, and the tool will pair them anyway. Treat the merge as a draft and inspect each sentence boundary in the live preview.

Merging two files in Subtitle Edit
The following steps follow the program’s documented merge workflow.

- Make working copies of both subtitle files and keep the originals untouched. Decide which language’s timing is more reliable; you will check against that track first.
- Choose Tools → Merge two subtitles.
- Load the first file on one side and the second file on the other. Use the file loader on each side to change either one.
- Select the output format. SRT and ASS are the two options covered by the documentation; the choice is explained in the next section.
- Review the live preview. Scroll through the opening, the middle, and the last few cues, and check that each paired block contains one complete sentence per language, not a fragment of one.
- Run the merge, then save the output under a new name.
Where a sentence is split in one file, the preview will show two fragments paired against one whole sentence. Do not accept those pairs as they are. Correct the cue boundaries in the working file first, then merge again.

When one language splits a sentence across cues
Sentence-level alignment often requires rebuilding cues. A 2022 technical report from the EASIER Consortium describes a method that extracts whole sentences from subtitle cues, estimates each sentence’s start and end time from word counts, and rebuilds subtitle files from the result. The report also notes that the method fails when sentences contain multiple punctuation marks, because the boundaries it relies on become unreliable. Word-count timing is an estimate. Check every rebuilt cue against the audio.
Here is a simplified example. Suppose the English file has this sentence split across two cues:

so please hurry.If the Spanish file carries the same thought in a single cue, the correct pairing is one Spanish cue spanning 00:00:01,000 to 00:00:05,000 against both English fragments, not a Spanish cue paired with only the first English fragment. Rebuilding the English cue as one sentence from 00:00:01,000 to 00:00:05,000 makes the pairing one-to-one, but the new end time is still an estimate until you play that passage.
Choosing the output format
The merge output format affects how the two languages appear on screen. Subtitle Edit’s documentation describes the following differences.

Whichever format you choose, preview the final file in the player you intend to use. The documentation describes how the files are built, not how every television, phone, or media server will display them.

Other tools: Subaligner
Subaligner’s version 0.3.4 documentation, dated 25 August 2023, describes the global and dual-stage alignment modes covered above. It lists support for SubRip, TTML, WebVTT, ASS, MicroDVD, MPL2, EBU STL, and SAMI. Behaviour can differ between releases, so check the documentation for the version you have installed before relying on a specific mode.
Checks before you export and publish
- The original files are saved separately from the working copies.
- No text from either language has been dropped. Compare cue counts and spot-check the first and last cue of each file.
- Sentence order is the same in both languages, and no pair mixes sentences from different parts of the film.
- The opening, middle, and closing sentences each match the audio within a tolerance you find acceptable for the content.
- Every cue rebuilt from word-count estimates has been played back and checked.
- The exported file has been opened in the intended player, with the stacked or styled layout visible on screen.
Limits of the evidence
The descriptions in this article follow the published documentation for Subtitle Edit and Subaligner, along with the EASIER Consortium report. They are not benchmarks of how accurately any tool aligns sentences. The report’s figure of 3,257,796 extracted sentences across five spoken languages describes that project’s dataset, not the accuracy of subtitle tools or the typical volume of subtitle work. Overlap pairing is a convenience for building a first draft, and it does not guarantee that the two languages carry the same sentence.
