Alibaba has reportedly held preliminary talks with Spanish renewable-energy company Solaria about supplying power to a data centre in Spain. The reports do not confirm a signed agreement, a final site, or an Alibaba data-centre construction project. Puertollano is the location mentioned, but a separate Solaria data-centre plan there makes the project’s identity uncertain.
What has been reported about Alibaba and Solaria?
The Next Web reported on 2 October 2026, citing Bloomberg and people familiar with the matter, that Alibaba had discussed a possible power-supply arrangement with Solaria. The report describes the conversations as preliminary; it also says Alibaba has approached other potential suppliers. Read The Next Web’s report.

The reporting supports only the possibility of a power-supply arrangement. It does not establish that Alibaba has announced a Spanish data-centre build, selected a final site or supplier, signed a binding contract, or set a construction schedule. No Alibaba-specific capacity figure is reported.

Why is Puertollano significant?
Solaria announced in 2024 that it had agreed with Japanese company Datasection to develop an AI data centre at Solaria’s industrial facilities in Puertollano. Solaria described power supply of up to 200 MW, with a 40 MW first phase. Those figures belong to the Datasection project, not to Alibaba. Solaria’s press room.
The available reporting does not establish whether Alibaba’s discussions relate to the Datasection development, a different project in Puertollano, or another facility. Treating the two as the same project would go beyond the evidence.
What Solaria’s data-centre business figures show
Solaria reported 438 MW of contracted data-centre capacity in its 24 September 2026 results release. It also reported €99.6 million in data-centre infrastructure sales in the first half of 2026, which it said was 34% more than in all of 2025. The company reported first-half net profit of €124.9 million, up 52% year on year. These are company-wide figures and do not identify Alibaba as a customer or establish capacity for the reported talks. Solaria’s results and announcements.
In the same release, CEO Arturo Díaz-Tejeiro discussed Solaria’s execution against its roadmap and its contracted data-centre capacity. That statement concerned the company’s results; it was not a comment on Alibaba.

What is known about Spain’s proposed data-centre rules?
The Next Web reported that Spain was drafting a decree that would require data centres above 1 MW to meet an hourly renewable-energy threshold and would impose EU-establishment and European data-location conditions. The account describes a draft, not enacted rules. Its exact provisions and legal status have not been confirmed against an official government source, and there is no reported regulatory ruling on Alibaba’s eligibility.

- Whether Alibaba and Solaria reach any agreement, and whether any agreement would be binding.
- Which facility or project the discussions concern, and whether Puertollano is the final location.
- Alibaba-specific power capacity, supply structure, renewable matching, grid access, and construction timing.
- How any proposed arrangement would be assessed under Spain’s final data-centre rules.
Until the companies disclose more, the key distinction is between reported early discussions and a confirmed project. Solaria’s separate Datasection plan and its company-wide capacity figures provide context, but neither verifies an Alibaba deal.
