Factory reset only if those steps fail: the reset method and what it erases vary by model, so identify your Echo before pressing buttons or choosing an on-screen option.
First check what is actually unresponsive
“Alexa is not responding” can mean a voice-pickup issue, an Echo that will not power on, a network problem, a setup or registration problem, or a connected smart-home accessory that stopped responding. These need different fixes; a factory reset is not the right first step for all of them.

- No power: Check that the Echo is plugged in using its power adapter and that the outlet works.
- Voice requests go unanswered: Check that the device is not muted. Amazon says a red light indicates mute on Echo devices. Try pressing the Action button on an Echo speaker to see whether it responds, and move it away from walls, other speakers, or background noise.
- Connection or setup trouble: Check that the internet works and confirm the Echo is connected to the right Wi-Fi network. For setup problems, also check that the Alexa app is up to date.
- Only an accessory is unresponsive: Check that the smart-home device is compatible and online, and try its manufacturer’s app. Reconnect or re-pair it if appropriate.
Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance covers Alexa voice-response problems, Echo setup problems, and smart-home device problems.

Restart before you reset
Unplug the Echo, wait, and reconnect it. The exact wait can depend on the model and the problem: Amazon’s instructions for the first-generation Echo specify 10 seconds for a restart, while its setup troubleshooting sequence recommends waiting 30 seconds before reconnecting. Follow the instructions for your device and symptom rather than treating either interval as universal.

If the Echo comes back online, test a voice request and check whether any smart-home accessories respond. If it remains unresponsive after the basic checks and restart, find the model-specific reset procedure below or use Amazon’s support instructions for your exact model.
Choose the reset method for your Echo model
Amazon uses different button combinations and on-screen menus across Echo models. Some devices provide a reset that keeps smart-home connections; a factory reset may clear them and erase other information or settings. Read the exact model’s instructions and the device’s confirmation prompt before proceeding.

| Echo model | Restart or reset instructions | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Echo (1st Generation) | Unplug for 10 seconds to restart. Use a paper clip or similar thin tool to press the recessed Reset button. Amazon describes a brief press for a reset that keeps smart-home connections and an 8-second hold for factory reset. | Do not apply this recessed-button procedure to other Echo models. |
| Echo (3rd or 4th Generation) | Unplug for 10 seconds to restart. Hold Action for 20 seconds to reset while keeping smart-home connections. For factory reset, hold Microphone off and Volume down for 20 seconds. | Button combinations differ between reset options. |
| Echo Studio (2019 release) | Unplug and reconnect to restart. Hold Action for 20 seconds to retain smart-home connections; hold Volume down and Microphone Enable/Disable for 20 seconds for factory reset. | These directions are for the 2019 release. |
| Echo Studio (2025 release) | Unplug and reconnect to restart. Hold Microphone Enable/Disable and Volume Down for 15 seconds to reset while keeping smart-home connections, or 25 seconds for factory reset. | These directions are for the 2025 release; do not substitute the 2019 timing. |
| Echo Hub | Hold Mute for 5–10 seconds until it restarts. For reset, use the on-screen Device Options and About the Device menus. | The on-screen options include a reset that can retain smart-home connections. |
| Echo Spot (2024 release) | Unplug and reconnect to restart. Open Device Options, select Factory Reset, then choose whether to retain smart-home connections or reset to factory defaults. | The device displays a setup QR code after reset. |
Amazon’s linked instructions are for Echo (1st Generation), Echo (3rd or 4th Generation), Echo Studio (2019 release), Echo Studio (2025 release), Echo Hub, and Echo Spot (2024 release). If your model is not listed, search Amazon support for its exact model name rather than extrapolating a button sequence.
Know what a factory reset can erase
A factory reset can erase personal information, device settings, and smart-home connections. The available choices differ by model: some instructions offer a reset that retains smart-home connections, while factory defaults clear them. Check the model’s directions and read the on-device prompt before confirming.

A connected device will not respond
Check the accessory’s compatibility and internet connection, then look in its manufacturer’s app. Reconnect or re-pair it as appropriate. If those steps do not help, Amazon’s guidance says to reset both the Alexa device and the smart-home device.
