Albertsons Companies (NYSE: ACI) reported $83.17 billion in net sales and other revenue for fiscal 2025, the 53 weeks ended February 28, 2026. That headline includes an estimated $1.36 billion from an extra week; identical sales grew 2.0%, gross margin narrowed, and GAAP net income was $217 million. Investors assessing ACI should weigh those operating trends alongside substantial debt, legal exposure and the company’s other disclosed risks—not treat revenue growth or adjusted earnings as a stand-alone verdict.
What does Albertsons do, and what does ACI stock represent?
Albertsons Companies, Inc. operates grocery stores, pharmacies, fuel centers and digital shopping services in the United States. Its Class A common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ACI. As of February 28, 2026, the company reported 2,244 stores across 35 states and the District of Columbia, and 51.2 million loyalty members during fiscal 2025. These figures describe the company’s footprint, not the value of its shares.

Fiscal 2025 sales mix shows why ACI is not simply a conventional supermarket story: non-perishables represented 48.8% of revenue, fresh products 31.3%, pharmacy 13.7%, fuel 4.6% and other revenue 1.6%. Digital sales are included in the categories where the sales occur, rather than reported as a separate revenue category. (Source: Albertsons Companies fiscal 2025 Form 10-K.)

Reported sales growth versus comparable demand
For fiscal 2025, net sales and other revenue increased 3.5% to $83.1725 billion. But the year ran for 53 weeks, compared with 52 weeks in fiscal 2024, and management estimated the additional week contributed $1.36 billion of sales and other revenue. The reported growth rate is therefore not a like-for-like measure of underlying demand.
#1 Best Overall
Albertsons reported a 2.0% increase in identical sales and a 21% increase in digital sales. Identical sales compare stores open in both periods, exclude fuel, and include direct-to-consumer digital sales. Pharmacy was the primary driver of identical-sales growth; store closures and lower fuel sales partly offset gains. The 21% digital increase shows channel growth, but not how much profit that growth generated after fulfillment costs. (Source: fiscal 2025 Form 10-K.)
Gross margin and operating economics
Gross margin rate fell to 27.2% in fiscal 2025 from 27.7% in fiscal 2024. Excluding fuel and LIFO effects, Albertsons reported a 59-basis-point decline. The company cited strong pharmacy growth, which carries a lower overall gross margin rate, and delivery and handling costs associated with digital growth. Customer-value investment and productivity initiatives also shape the cost picture.
For investors, the practical question is whether pharmacy and digital growth can contribute enough after mix and fulfillment costs, and whether productivity gains can counter wages, inflation and price investment. Higher sales do not by themselves establish improving profitability. (Source: fiscal 2025 Form 10-K.)

Albertsons reported $217 million of GAAP net income for fiscal 2025, alongside $1.209 billion of adjusted net income and $3.902 billion of adjusted EBITDA. Adjusted net income and adjusted EBITDA are company-defined non-GAAP measures; they exclude or adjust items under the company’s stated methodology and should not be treated as substitutes for GAAP earnings. Read the company’s reconciliations to see which items account for the differences.
A major item was a $773.8 million charge, or $599.8 million net of tax, associated with an opioid settlement framework announced with the results. Albertsons said payments are expected over nine years. The framework is intended to resolve substantially all opioid-related claims by participating states, political subdivisions and Native American tribes. The anticipated payment period does not remove uncertainty about the company’s other legal matters. How much debt does Albertsons have?
At February 28, 2026, Albertsons reported approximately $8.6 billion of debt excluding finance leases. Total debt including finance lease obligations was $8.9466 billion; the balance sheet showed $8.4126 billion of long-term debt and finance lease obligations and $534 million of current maturities. These figures differ because one excludes lease obligations while the other includes them.
The 10-K’s debt maturity schedule excludes finance lease obligations, debt discounts and deferred financing costs:
| Due year | Debt maturities |
|---|---|
| 2026 | $485.1 million |
| 2027 | $906.6 million |
| 2028 | $44.0 million |
| 2029 | $2.4779 billion |
| 2030 | $397.0 million |
| Thereafter | $4.3162 billion |
Debt should be assessed together with interest expense, operating cash flow, capital spending and lease commitments. A maturity schedule identifies when principal is due; by itself, it does not establish the company’s future ability to refinance or repay. Albertsons says its debt may absorb operating cash flow, reduce financial flexibility and limit additional borrowing capacity. (Source: fiscal 2025 Form 10-K.)
What are the risks of investing in Albertsons stock?
The following are risks Albertsons identifies in its own disclosures. They are possible pressures on results, not predictions that each will occur.
Competition and digital execution
Albertsons competes with supercenters, other grocers and drug retailers, club and dollar stores, discount and online retailers, delivery providers, specialty stores and local operators. The company says online competition is growing and that its digital initiatives are not assured of success. Digital sales growth therefore needs to be considered with delivery and handling costs, not in isolation.
Consumer spending and economic conditions
Inflation or deflation can affect sales, margins and spending patterns. Fuel and energy costs, consumer confidence, trade disruptions and reductions in SNAP benefits may also affect results. The company says a larger share of annual revenue may occur in November and December because of major holidays, although its business is generally not seasonal. This holiday pattern is distinct from fiscal 2025’s extra week, which affects year-over-year comparisons.
Thin margins, labor and productivity
Grocery retail requires substantial labor. Recruiting and retaining employees, wage and benefit costs, labor laws and union negotiations can affect service and expenses. Albertsons also depends on productivity initiatives to help manage costs; projected savings may not materialize as expected. In fiscal 2025, pharmacy mix and digital delivery and handling costs were already cited as factors weighing on gross margin.
Debt, legal matters and regulation
Debt obligations can constrain spending choices and make refinancing conditions important. Separately, the opioid settlement framework produced a large charge and expected multiyear payments. The 10-K also describes merger-related litigation and other claims, whose outcomes are uncertain. Food safety, pharmacy, privacy, antitrust, employment, environmental and other regulations may add costs or affect operations.
Technology and cybersecurity
Albertsons relies on complex information systems, payment infrastructure and third-party services, including cloud providers. Outages, ransomware, data breaches and other system failures could disrupt operations or expose data. These risks matter to a retailer whose stores, pharmacy operations and digital shopping depend on technology functioning reliably. (Source for company-identified risks: fiscal 2025 Form 10-K.)

A disciplined assessment links growth, profitability, cash needs and risk. ACI’s fiscal 2025 results offer a starting baseline through February 28, 2026; they do not establish current share valuation or reflect any later quarterly results. Before drawing a current conclusion, investors should check for newer filings and use current market data. Avoid comparing Albertsons with another grocer unless the periods and metric definitions line up.
- Check comparable sales: distinguish identical sales from reported revenue, account for the 53-week fiscal year, and note that identical sales exclude fuel.
- Track margins: look at gross and operating margin trends and consider pharmacy mix, digital fulfillment, price investment and labor costs together.
- Read earnings reconciliations: compare GAAP net income with company-adjusted measures and identify the adjustments that separate them.
- Assess financial obligations: distinguish debt excluding finance leases from debt including them, then consider maturities alongside cash generation, interest and capital spending.
- Compare like with like: for peers, align fiscal periods and definitions for sales, fuel treatment, margins, digital economics, store productivity, earnings adjustments and lease-inclusive debt.
CEO Susan Morris described fiscal 2025 as a year of “disciplined execution and resilience,” citing strong fourth-quarter adjusted EBITDA despite pharmacy-related top-line headwinds. That is management’s characterization; investors can test it against the reported GAAP result, margin decline, calendar effect and balance-sheet obligations above.
