For longer battery life on a Pixel 5, start by reducing screen activity, leaving Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled, and checking which apps use the most power. For slowdowns, restart the phone, check storage and app updates, then use Safe Mode to see whether a downloaded app is responsible. These steps can help, but they cannot restore capacity lost as the battery ages: Google lists the Pixel 5 as no longer receiving Android version or security updates.
Make the Pixel 5 use less battery day to day
Google’s recommendations are settings and troubleshooting measures, not guaranteed runtime gains. Begin with the screen and apps, which are practical places to look before changing how the phone works.

Reduce screen activity
- Lower screen brightness and shorten the screen timeout.
- Turn on Dark theme and turn off live wallpapers if you do not need them.
- Turn off Always-on Display to avoid keeping information visible while the screen is otherwise idle.
- Consider turning off Smooth Display if battery runtime matters more than the Pixel 5’s smoother, higher-refresh-rate display. Google lists the display as supporting up to 90 Hz and includes Smooth Display among settings that can be disabled to save battery. Google’s Pixel 5 specifications and battery guidance explain these options.
Keep app power use in check
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and review use by app, including background use.
- Where an app offers a battery-usage setting, leave it at Optimized unless you have a specific reason to allow more background activity.
- If one app stands out, investigate or restrict that app rather than force-stopping essential services or changing settings across the phone.
- Keep Adaptive Battery enabled: open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Adaptive Battery and turn on Use Adaptive Battery. After a new setup or factory reset, Google says learning usage patterns can take a few weeks.
Google’s current instructions for these settings are in Get the most life from your Pixel phone battery; per-app checks are also covered in its battery-drain troubleshooting guide.
Switch off connections you are not using
Turn off hotspot or tethering when you are finished with it. The Pixel 5 supports Adaptive Connectivity, announced by Google as a way to switch between 5G and 4G based on app activity. Its availability depends on carrier and app support, and it is not a substitute for checking battery use if drain is unexpected. Google also notes that weak or obstructed 5G signal can affect service and performance in the device specifications. The feature announcement describes the intended 5G-to-4G behavior: Google’s December 7, 2020 Pixel feature announcement.

Use Battery Saver when reduced background activity is acceptable
Battery Saver is useful when you need to stretch the time between charges and can accept reduced background activity. Google’s original Pixel 5 claim of “up to 48 hours” was specifically for Extreme Battery Saver with limited features, including disabled 5G connectivity. It came from third-party testing in California in mid-2020 on pre-production hardware and software, and Google cautioned actual battery life could be lower. It is not a realistic present-day runtime promise for every Pixel 5. Google’s 2020 launch announcement gives the conditions behind that claim.
Protect battery health and charge sensibly
Heat matters both for immediate runtime and battery health. Google warns that a hot phone drains much faster even when it is not in use, and that this kind of drain can damage the battery. Avoid leaving the phone in hot surroundings, especially while charging. Google’s battery guidance also recommends charging optimization rather than repeatedly running a lithium-ion battery from empty to full to “train” it.
Use Adaptive Charging, but do not expect an 80% limit
Adaptive Charging is supported on Pixel 4a and later, including Pixel 5. It learns charging habits and aims to finish charging shortly before you typically unplug. Google says it can take about 14 days to learn; if your schedule varies, it may not activate every time. The 80% charging limit is listed for Pixel 6a and later, so it is not a Pixel 5 setting. See Google’s current battery support page for availability and setup details.

Know what a replacement charger can and cannot do
Google specifies 18 W fast charging and a USB-C adapter using USB-PD 2.0 for the Pixel 5. The phone originally shipped with a compatible adapter, so a replacement is only necessary if yours is missing or damaged. A compatible 18 W USB-C PD charger can meet the specified charging setup; it does not increase battery capacity or reverse battery wear. Google’s Pixel 5 hardware specifications list the charging details.
Troubleshoot unexpected drain or a slow Pixel 5
Work from low-risk checks toward more disruptive steps. A sudden problem does not by itself show that the battery needs replacement or that a factory reset is necessary.
1. Check battery use and allow for post-update activity
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and look for unusually high app or background use. If the phone recently installed a software update, Google says extra drain for a few days can be normal while downloads and software optimization finish. If it continues, follow the checks below and Google’s battery-drain troubleshooting guidance. Google’s Battery diagnostics page applies to Pixel 6 and later, not Pixel 5.

2. Restart and check available updates
Restart the phone, then update installed apps through the Play Store. To check for a system update, open Settings > System > Software update. Google currently lists Pixel 5 as no longer receiving Android version or security updates, so a system update may not be available; app updates and a restart are still useful checks. Google’s Pixel update support page lists the current support status.
3. Check free storage
Open Settings > Storage. Google says a phone can have issues when less than 10% of its storage is available. If you are below that level, remove files or apps you no longer need, or move backed-up media off the device. Follow Google’s guidance for speeding up a slow Pixel phone.
4. Use Safe Mode to test downloaded apps
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the slowdown or drain stops there, a downloaded app is more likely to be involved; remove recently installed apps one at a time, restarting and testing after each removal. If the problem continues in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be the cause. Google’s slow-phone troubleshooting steps explain how to enter and leave Safe Mode.

5. Leave a factory reset until simpler checks fail
A factory reset deletes local data and apps. Do not use it as an early speed-up trick: back up important data first, and consider it only after the less disruptive checks have not resolved the problem. Google outlines the consequences and reset process in its slow Pixel phone guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set realistic expectations for an older Pixel 5
Google’s original hardware specifications list a 4,000 mAh minimum and 4,080 mAh typical battery capacity. Those are specifications for the device, not a measurement of the remaining capacity in a particular used phone. Google has not published a current Pixel 5 runtime figure or benchmark that predicts how long an individual handset will last today. The phone’s actual endurance depends on its present battery condition, signal, settings, apps, and use. Its remaining update support is also limited: Google lists it as no longer receiving Android version or security updates.
