More GPUs do not automatically mean more useful AI work. When accelerators wait for data, synchronization, or other workers, network delays can reduce the performance a cluster actually delivers. But networking is not always the bottleneck: memory, compute, topology, scheduling, software, power, and cooling interact, so the constraint depends on the system and workload.
When does the network become an AI bottleneck?
A network bottleneck occurs when moving data between accelerators or servers takes long enough to keep compute resources from doing useful work. Microsoft Research describes network and memory limits as factors that can reduce GPU utilization; a high peak compute specification cannot compensate for accelerators spending too much time waiting.

The pressure depends on how a workload communicates. Distributed training may need frequent synchronization, including all-reduce operations. Mixture-of-experts training and inference can involve all-to-all traffic as work and data move among groups of GPUs. If communication takes longer than the useful computation between exchanges, the network can limit end-to-end throughput.

Why do AI clusters need more than fast links?
Link speed is only one part of network performance. Latency, congestion, reliability, topology, and the placement of jobs and data all affect how quickly work completes. A cluster can have high nominal bandwidth yet perform poorly if traffic concentrates on a subset of links or switches.
Google Research’s 2025 hotspot study found that, under hotspot conditions compared with low-utilization levels, some distributed applications experienced more than 2× end-to-end latency degradation. The study also reported that hotspot-aware task placement led to 90% fewer hot top-of-rack switches in its cluster scheduler, while hotspot-aware data placement reduced p95 network latency by more than 50% in its distributed file system. Those are results in the studied systems, not guarantees for every cluster.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.

The implication is practical: network hardware is not the only lever. Congestion control, load balancing, and traffic engineering can improve path use for a fixed placement; scheduling and data placement can also avoid concentrating demand beneath particular switches.
What is the difference between scale-up and scale-out networking?
AI systems use multiple networking layers because communication inside a tightly coupled group of accelerators is different from traffic across a larger cluster. The terms describe scope, not interchangeable alternatives.

| Layer | What it connects | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Scale-up | Accelerators within a rack or tightly coupled domain | Supports fast exchanges among GPUs that cooperate as a larger compute unit. NVIDIA’s technical explanation describes this as enabling GPUs within a domain to behave as a single compute engine. |
| Scale-out | Servers across a cluster or data center | Connects separate machines so workloads can spread across more accelerators. It must carry traffic such as training synchronization and, for some workloads, all-to-all exchanges. |
A system can need both layers. Strong scale-up bandwidth within a rack does not remove the need for effective scale-out communication between racks, and a fast scale-out fabric cannot eliminate delays inside a tightly coupled accelerator domain.
What do real AI network deployments show?
Public examples demonstrate that large AI systems use different network designs and that reported figures describe different scopes. They are not a controlled comparison of fabrics.

| Example | Reported network details | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Jupiter | Google Cloud said in October 2024 that its fifth-generation Jupiter architecture scales to 13 petabits per second of bisection bandwidth; its post also gives a 13.1 Pb/s calculation from 64 aggregation blocks. | Google describes Jupiter as powering production data centers. The figures describe Google’s network architecture, not a per-GPU speed or an independent comparison. |
| Microsoft Azure GB300 NVL72 cluster | In an October 2025 account, Azure described a production cluster of more than 4,600 systems using InfiniBand, with 800 Gbps per GPU of cross-rack bandwidth and up to 130 TB/s of intra-rack NVLink bandwidth. | These are Azure’s specifications for its described system. Cross-rack and intra-rack figures refer to different network scopes. |
| xAI Colossus | NVIDIA’s October 2024 announcement described a 100,000-GPU Hopper cluster using Spectrum-X Ethernet and reported 95% data throughput. | The cluster details and throughput figure are vendor-reported announcement claims, not an independent benchmark or an apples-to-apples comparison with other fabrics. |
Google’s October 2024 post also discussed 3.2 Tbps of non-blocking GPU-to-GPU traffic per A3 Ultra server over RoCE as an upcoming offering at that time. That announcement-era status should not be read as confirmation of current availability.

Ethernet can be used for large AI systems, as NVIDIA’s Colossus announcement illustrates; Azure’s described GB300 cluster uses InfiniBand. Those examples show that both fabrics appear in hyperscale deployments, but they do not establish that one is faster, cheaper, or better for every workload.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Choosing between fabrics requires comparing them in the intended environment: workload communication pattern, topology, congestion and failure behavior, software support, operational requirements, and performance under realistic load. Vendor-reported figures can describe a specific system, but they should not be treated as neutral, controlled comparisons.
How do physical links shape the design?
Reach, power, reliability, cabling, and maintainability affect how a cluster can be built. In a September 2025 discussion, Microsoft Research characterized copper links as power-efficient and reliable but short-reach, describing links under 2 meters; it described optical fiber as reaching tens of meters and said optical links in the technologies it discussed could fail up to 100 times as often as copper. These are Microsoft Research’s technology-specific characterizations, not universal measurements for every cable or optic.
That same Microsoft Research account described MOSAIC, a microLED-based optical interconnect project targeting reach up to 50 meters while addressing power, cost, and reliability. Microsoft presented it as active research and development, not a generally available product.

How can teams tell whether the network is the constraint?
Evaluate the complete workload rather than assuming that a link-speed figure predicts application performance. A useful investigation looks for evidence that communication or congestion is keeping accelerators from doing useful work.
- Measure delivered performance: Compare end-to-end throughput and latency under the workload’s real communication pattern, not just peak link rates.
- Look for waiting and imbalance: Check whether accelerators are idle during data transfers or synchronization, and whether particular links, switches, or rack paths carry disproportionate traffic.
- Test placement and software: Examine whether task or data placement concentrates demand, and whether scheduling, load balancing, congestion control, or traffic engineering can improve results.
- Include the rest of the system: Consider memory, compute, topology, software, power, and cooling alongside networking; Azure describes its GB300 deployment as a co-designed system that includes power and cooling considerations.
The diagnosis should be specific to the deployment: a network can limit one workload while memory or compute limits another. Treating “more bandwidth” as the automatic fix risks missing placement, congestion, or a bottleneck elsewhere in the system.
