For iPhone setup alone, AirPods and Beats are similarly straightforward: both can show a nearby setup animation, and both can be paired manually through Bluetooth settings if it does not appear. Both are also documented as reconnecting automatically after pairing. AirPods have a clearer advantage if you want to move among Apple devices—but automatic switching is available on specified Beats models, too.
How easy are AirPods and Beats to set up with an iPhone?
Apple’s instructions describe much the same first-time process for each: turn on Bluetooth, open the charging case near the iPhone, then follow the onscreen setup prompt. For AirPods, see Apple’s AirPods setup guide; for Beats, see Apple Support’s Beats pairing guide.

If the animation does not appear, you can pair either product manually in the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings. The exact button or case steps vary by model and generation, so use the instructions for your particular earbuds rather than assuming one button sequence works for every AirPods or Beats model.
Do they reconnect automatically?
Apple says Beats connect automatically the next time you put them on after connecting them to an iPhone or iPad. AirPods are automatically paired with supported Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. In everyday iPhone use, Apple documents automatic reconnection for both; its guidance does not establish a universal winner between the brands on this point.

Which is easier if you use a Mac or iPad as well?
AirPods are the more clearly documented choice for people who move between Apple devices. Apple says supported AirPods can automatically connect to the device you are using when those devices share an Apple Account. Apple also lists specific Beats products that support automatic switching, so this capability is not exclusive to AirPods. Check Apple’s automatic-switching guide for the supported Beats models and requirements; model, software version, and region can affect availability.
You can also select either product manually from playback controls. If you want automatic switching, Apple’s instructions explain how to configure it for supported devices. The feature depends on the exact earbuds and Apple-device setup, so confirm that your chosen Beats model is on Apple’s list instead of assuming all Beats switch automatically.

What should you choose?
- Choose AirPods if you want the most clearly documented path for automatic movement among an iPhone and other Apple devices, and your AirPods model and settings support the feature.
- Consider Beats if you use an iPhone and prefer a particular Beats model. Its nearby setup and manual Bluetooth pairing are also supported, and some Beats models can automatically switch among Apple devices.
- If you use only an iPhone, the available Apple setup guidance does not show that either brand is universally easier. Compare the exact models and the features that matter to you rather than deciding by brand name alone.
What these setup guides do—and do not—tell you
Apple’s iPhone guide to using AirPods describes uses including listening to audio, calls, messages, and reminders. That is not a complete AirPods-versus-Beats comparison, and setup instructions do not establish which earbuds sound better, feel more comfortable, have longer battery life, offer better microphones, or have better controls.
