How Optimized Battery Charging helps
Apple designed Optimized Battery Charging to reduce battery wear by limiting how long supported AirPods remain fully charged. AirPods and their paired iPhone or iPad learn a daily charging routine, then delay completing the charge until shortly before the earbuds are expected to be used. The feature aims to reduce wear; it cannot stop normal battery aging.

Apple lists AirPods Pro and AirPods 3 or later as supported. It says the feature is on by default when setting up the device or after updating to iOS or iPadOS 15 or later. Apple does not publish an AirPods-specific percentage, cycle count, or lifespan extension for the feature, so treat any precise claim about how much longer a battery will last as unsubstantiated.

- Put the AirPods in your ears and connect them to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Settings and select your AirPods near the top of the screen.
- Tap Battery.
- Check Optimized Battery Charging and leave it enabled if you want the feature to manage charging around your routine.
If you do not see the setting, check that your AirPods model supports it and that the connected iPhone or iPad is running iOS or iPadOS 15 or later.

AirPods Pro 3: Optimized Charge Limit
AirPods Pro 3 have an additional option called Optimized Charge Limit. Apple says it adapts to daily use, deciding when to charge to an optimized limit and when to allow a full charge. It is on by default and requires iOS or iPadOS 26 or later on the paired iPhone or iPad. You can find it in the AirPods battery settings. If you need a full charge, you can temporarily or fully turn the limit off there.
Habits that help avoid unnecessary wear
- Return the AirPods to their case between uses. Apple recommends keeping them charged this way; the case holds multiple charges.
- Avoid prolonged heat. Apple recommends using AirPods at 0°C–35°C (32°F–95°F) and storing them at −10°C–45°C (14°F–113°F). Very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life, so do not leave them in a parked car.
- Do not mistake ordinary warmth for a fault. Apple says the AirPods may feel warm during normal charging or use; extreme heat is the concern.

If your AirPods battery already drains quickly
Optimized charging is intended to reduce future wear; it does not restore capacity that has already declined. Apple says AirPods and case batteries should only be repaired by a trained technician, to avoid damage that could cause overheating, fire, or injury. Do not attempt a DIY battery replacement.
