Apple sells AirPods 5 in two case configurations and AirPods 4 in standard and ANC versions. For the noise-cancelling comparison, the relevant predecessor is AirPods 4 with ANC—not standard AirPods 4. Apple’s comparison page lists the configurations and their features.

These are Apple’s published estimates for listening with ANC enabled, not guaranteed results. Actual battery life varies with settings, environment, usage, and other factors. Apple’s AirPods 5 specifications and AirPods 4 specifications provide model-specific details.
How much better is AirPods 5’s ANC?
Apple claims AirPods 5 delivers up to 1.5 times more Active Noise Cancellation than AirPods 4 with ANC. Apple says it tested the comparison in accordance with IEC 60268-24. This is a manufacturer claim based on a specified test method, not a promise that every listener will perceive a 50 percent improvement or that noise will be reduced by the same amount in every situation.

The available figures establish the rated difference, but do not provide an independent listening test or a comparison of how well either model fits different ears. If noise control is your main reason to upgrade, treat Apple’s claim as a useful specification rather than a substitute for trying the fit yourself.
Which AirPods 5 case gives you more battery life?
Only AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case has the higher published ANC listening estimates: up to five hours on a charge and up to 22 hours with the case. That is one hour more per charge and two hours more with the case than AirPods 4 with ANC, according to Apple’s estimates. Standard-case AirPods 5 is rated for up to four hours with ANC and up to 20 hours with the case—the same figures as AirPods 4 with ANC.

Apple’s AirPods 4 ANC test notes pre-production hardware, a paired iPhone 16 Pro Max, prerelease software, 50 percent volume, and defined audio and noise settings. Battery performance in everyday use can differ from these controlled estimates.

What changes with charging, Find My, and controls?
Wireless charging and Find My
The AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case can charge over USB-C, with an Apple Watch charger, or with a Qi-certified charger. Its built-in speaker can help you locate the case through Find My. The standard AirPods 5 case is USB-C only; do not assume the wireless charging and case-speaker features come with every AirPods 5 purchase.

Volume control on the stem
Apple lists volume adjustment by swiping up or down on the stem for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. Apple describes this as a first for its open-ear form factor. The feature is not listed for the standard-case AirPods 5 configuration.
Replacement case compatibility
Charging cases are not interchangeable across these models. Apple’s AirPods identification and case compatibility guide says each case works with its matching earbuds and is not compatible with other AirPods variants. Match the exact generation and configuration when buying a replacement.

How do the resistance ratings compare?
Apple lists AirPods 5 as IP57 and AirPods 4 as IP54. These are ingress-protection ratings, not a claim that either model is waterproof. A higher rating does not make the earbuds suitable for swimming or guarantee protection in every exposure; follow Apple’s care guidance for the specific model.

Choose AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case if…
- You want the full set of AirPods 5 changes: Apple’s stronger ANC claim, wireless charging, a Find My case speaker, stem volume swipe, and the longer published ANC battery estimates.
- You already use an Apple Watch charger or Qi-certified charger and want the case to support those options.
Keep or choose AirPods 4 with ANC if…
- Your current fit, battery life, and noise control work for you; being a newer generation alone is not a reason to replace a functioning pair.
- You do not need the AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case features. Standard-case AirPods 5 does not increase Apple’s published ANC battery estimates over AirPods 4 with ANC.
Both generations use Apple’s H2 chip, so that is not a generational upgrade. The available specifications do not establish a hands-on sound-quality or fit advantage, and current prices and availability depend on your market. Check local pricing before deciding whether the feature differences justify a purchase.
