Apple lists Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Adaptive Audio and Transparency, and claims up to 50 percent more external noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC. That percentage is Apple’s comparison, not an independent test. Comfort, fit, sound, call quality and noise reduction in everyday settings remain unverified here.
What AirPods 5 are, and who they may suit
AirPods 5 are Apple’s 2026 open-ear earbuds. Their design may appeal if you prefer earbuds that do not use an in-ear tip, but open-ear fit is personal: the available product information does not establish how securely or comfortably they sit across different ears, especially during movement.

Apple lists an H2 chip, an optical in-ear sensor, a force sensor, two beamforming microphones and an inward-facing microphone. The listed weight is 4.3 g per earbud. Those specifications describe the hardware, but they do not establish listening comfort, microphone quality or sound performance.
What Apple says about noise control and sound
Apple says AirPods 5 remove up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, attributing the improvement to a new multiport acoustic architecture and improved computational audio. The claim is specific to that comparison and is not an independent measurement; Apple’s announcement does not establish how the result varies by environment or listener. Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement also describes richer, more detailed sound across a wider range of ear geometries, but that is manufacturer language rather than independent listening evidence.

Apple lists ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency and Conversation Awareness. It also lists Voice Isolation for calls and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. The feature list does not show how natural Transparency sounds, how well ANC handles a commute or flight, or how clear calls are in noisy surroundings; those questions require real-world testing.
Choose the case configuration that matches your charging needs
Both configurations charge over USB-C. The Wireless Charging Case adds charging options and hardware features, and Apple lists higher battery estimates for it. These are Apple’s stated maximums, not guaranteed runtime or independent test results.

Durability: understand the IP57 rating
Apple lists an IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance rating. Treat that as a stated resistance classification, not a promise that the earbuds are immune to damage from every exposure or condition.

So, are AirPods 5 fit for purpose?
On paper, they are a plausible option for someone seeking open-ear earbuds with ANC and Apple’s audio features, particularly if the Wireless Charging Case’s added charging methods and Find My speaker matter to them. Whether they are actually comfortable, stable, good-sounding or effective at reducing noise is not established by the product specifications or Apple’s claims alone. Those are the deciding factors to assess through a returnable purchase or independent hands-on testing before treating them as a sure fit.
