What impressed reviewers about AirPods 5?
Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, with U.S. retail availability scheduled to begin September 18. The headline change is ANC in an open-ear design. Apple says AirPods 5 reduce external noise by up to 50 percent more than AirPods 4 with ANC; that is Apple’s comparison claim, not an independent performance measurement. Apple’s announcement describes the new model and launch details.

In a week-long hands-on report, MacRumors’ Juli Clover found ANC noticeably better than on AirPods 4 with ANC. Tom’s Guide likewise found ANC useful, and described the sound as richer and more detailed than AirPods 4 in its listening sessions. Those are the reviewers’ impressions rather than a single controlled comparison. MacRumors’ hands-on and Tom’s Guide’s review detail their experiences.

How good is the noise cancellation?
ANC can reduce noise, but AirPods 5’s open fit does not seal the ear canal. In Tom’s Guide’s two-day review, the reviewer tested ANC with a 68 dB city-sounds track and could still hear some horns and indistinct chatter, as well as typing and conversation in everyday listening. This is a useful illustration of the tradeoff, not a universal result for every environment or listener.

MacRumors also found AirPods 5’s sound muddier than AirPods Pro 3, particularly in the low mids. Tom’s Guide judged the ANC less effective than Pro 3 and reported that surrounding sounds remained audible. These are reviewers’ qualitative comparisons, not laboratory measurements. If reducing ambient sound as much as possible is the priority, the more isolating fit of Pro 3 is the relevant distinction; AirPods 5 favor an open fit.
AirPods 5 vs. AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case
At U.S. launch, Apple listed the standard AirPods 5 at $129 and the Wireless Charging Case version at $149. These are launch prices, not a statement of current pricing or availability. The two versions share the open-ear design and ANC; the upgrade adds charging flexibility and stem swipe volume control.

MacRumors reports the base model at four hours, while Apple’s announcement does not give that version’s ANC runtime in the cited launch details. Treat the base-model figure as MacRumors’ report rather than a reconciled manufacturer specification. Apple’s “up to” battery figures are claims, not guaranteed runtime for every listening setup.
Which version should you choose?
- Choose standard AirPods 5 if USB-C charging meets your needs and you would rather keep the launch price lower.
- Choose the Wireless Charging Case version if charging from an Apple Watch or Qi-compatible charger matters, or if you want volume control by swiping the stem. Apple also specifies up to 22 hours of playback with this case.
- Consider a more isolating design if blocking conversation and other surrounding sounds matters more than an open-ear fit. Reviewers found that AirPods 5 did not isolate as effectively as AirPods Pro 3.
Compatibility and feature limits
Apple says full feature functionality requires a compatible Apple device running current software. Live Translation and Apple Intelligence features have additional device, language, software, and regional conditions, so their availability should not be assumed for every iPhone, language, or location. Check Apple’s compatibility and feature requirements before buying if a particular intelligent feature is decisive.

Apple also says AirPods 5 use 40 percent recycled material overall, including 70 percent recycled plastic in the Wireless Charging Case and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery. It reports 35 percent renewable energy across the supply chain. These are Apple’s sustainability figures, not independent lifecycle assessments.
