It cannot make a home pollutant-free, remove every kind of pollution, or replace source control and ventilation. To choose one, compare its particle clean air delivery rate (CADR) with the room it must serve, then account for the pollutant, operating speed, and filter upkeep.
What a portable air purifier can realistically do
“Air purifier,” “portable air cleaner,” and “air cleaner” are often used for the same kind of room appliance: a fan pulls air through a filter and returns cleaner air to the room. A particle filter can capture some airborne particles, but effectiveness depends on the device, the room, and how long and fast it runs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says air cleaning may help alongside source control and ventilation, but is not a substitute for either. EPA guidance on air cleaners and ventilation.

How to size a cleaner for a room
Start with the unit’s CADR, or clean air delivery rate: the volume of filtered air it delivers for specified particle types. For smoke and small particles, compare the smoke CADR with the room’s floor area. A room-size claim by itself is less informative if it does not say what CADR it is based on, the ceiling height, or the fan speed used.

| Room area | EPA minimum CADR estimate |
|---|---|
| 100 sq. ft. | 65 cfm |
| 200 sq. ft. | 130 cfm |
| 300 sq. ft. | 195 cfm |
| 400 sq. ft. | 260 cfm |
These are EPA estimates for particle removal assuming an 8-foot ceiling; they are not guarantees of performance in every room. EPA’s sizing guidance. For higher ceilings, open floor plans, or a cleaner expected to cover connected spaces, account for the larger air volume rather than relying on the floor area of one small zone.
For wildfire smoke
EPA’s wildfire guidance recommends a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. For example, a 300-square-foot room calls for at least 200 cfm under that rule. EPA also advises using a CARB-certified air cleaner to limit ozone emissions. Certification and product specifications can change, so check the current listing for the exact model. Choose for the pollutant, not just the product label
CADR is a particle measure. A unit with a strong particle CADR is not necessarily suited to gases or odors. For those, look for activated carbon or another gas-targeted absorbent medium. EPA notes that the amount of carbon matters and that there is no widely used performance rating system for portable gas filters; the word “carbon” alone does not establish how well a filter will work. EPA’s guide to air cleaners.
- Fine particles, including smoke: compare smoke CADR with room area.
- Gases or odors: look for gas-targeted media, such as activated carbon, and consider how much is present.
- More than one concern: check that the device has suitable media for each; particle filtration does not imply gas filtration.
Check emissions and real-world operating tradeoffs
A cleaner only delivers its rated airflow under its test conditions; CADR is typically measured at high fan speed. Higher speed and longer operation generally move more air through the filter, but can mean more noise and energy use. Consider whether you can tolerate the setting needed for the room, rather than choosing solely on a maximum-speed rating.

Avoid ozone generators in occupied spaces. The EPA calls ozone a lung irritant and says ozone levels that do not exceed public-health standards do not effectively remove viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological pollutants. EPA guidance on air cleaners and respiratory viruses.
Keep the cleaner working—and address the source
Dirty or overloaded filters work less well. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement instructions, and confirm that replacement filters are compatible with the exact device model before buying. If a cleaner is used for smoke, EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance recommends running it continuously at the highest fan setting. EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance.

Where outdoor air is clean enough, ventilation can dilute indoor pollutants; source control—removing or reducing what is producing pollution—can prevent them from building up in the first place. A purifier cannot compensate for every significant source or inadequate ventilation. For mold, it may capture some airborne particles, but it will not fix the moisture problem that allows growth. EPA’s guide to air cleaners.
When HVAC filtration or a DIY cleaner may make more sense
Central HVAC
A central system can filter air across the home while it runs. EPA advises using a MERV 13 filter, or the highest-efficiency filter the system can accommodate. Check compatibility with the system manufacturer or an HVAC professional before upgrading; a filter that the equipment cannot handle is not a suitable choice. EPA indoor air filtration guidance.

DIY box-fan filters
A box fan paired with furnace filters can be an alternative where a commercial cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable, but measured performance varies with construction. EPA’s chamber tests using simulated wildfire smoke reported a smoke CADR of 111 ± 1 for a box fan with one 1-inch MERV 13 filter, rising to 156 ± 4 when a cardboard shroud was added. A 4-inch MERV 13 filter with a shroud measured 248 ± 15; two 1-inch MERV 13 filters with a shroud measured 263 ± 22; and a Corsi-Rosenthal box with four 1-inch MERV 13 filters and a shroud measured 401 ± 31. These are measurements of the tested designs, not ratings for every DIY build or forecasts of health benefit. EPA generally prefers commercial cleaners with known CADR because DIY CADR is usually unknown. EPA’s DIY air-cleaner test results.
