Short answer: it depends on the region and version. At the Korea/Taiwan launch in November 2025, players reportedly found Quna-purchased items that granted power; NCSOFT said it would remove them. The global model announced in July 2026 is described differently, but its Daeva Pass may include upgrade materials. Whether those materials create a meaningful competitive advantage is not established by the available information.
What counts as pay-to-win in AION 2?
The useful test is what spending does in play, not whether a product is called a membership, pass, convenience item, or premium currency. A system is meaningfully pay-to-win when real-money spending directly buys combat power or materially speeds access to gear and competitive advantages.

- Cosmetics alone do not establish pay-to-win.
- Convenience benefits need to be judged by whether they change progression or competitive outcomes.
- Premium currency that can be exchanged for gameplay currency, or passes that award upgrade materials, deserve closer scrutiny. Their presence alone does not prove a measurable power gap.
What happened at the Korea/Taiwan launch?
NCSOFT’s September 12, 2025 announcement described a Korea/Taiwan business model with memberships and passes for convenience, cosmetic costumes, weapon skins, pets and wings, plus an exchange between in-game currency and premium currency. NCSOFT’s launch-model announcement did not, by itself, establish that all of those features were power-neutral.
At launch on November 19, 2025, players reportedly found items purchasable with Quna that granted power. PC Gamer reported that NCSOFT held an emergency broadcast and said the items would be pulled after a temporary update. In PC Gamer’s November 20 report and translation, development producer Kim Nam-joon said, “We were complacent and unthoughtful, and we will be pulling the items from the store after today’s temporary update.” Business-division head So In-seop apologized: “I have no excuse to offer you, but I am truly sorry.” PC Gamer’s account of the launch controversy is evidence of that launch episode, not proof that the items remain available today or are part of the global shop.

How the announced trade design fits
Before launch, NCSOFT producer Namjoon Kim described trade as using in-game currency rather than premium currency: “The Trade system enables players to exchange items using in-game currency instead of premium currency. After careful consideration, we designed this system to offer the most enjoyable experience for players.” That statement appeared in NCSOFT’s August 12, 2025 AION2NIGHT recap; it should not be taken as a description of every later exchange mechanic.
What is known about the global monetization plan?
A July 2026 summary of an official NCSOFT global-team notice describes the global version as free-to-play, with Kina earned through gameplay and Quna as premium currency. It says an active membership was required for access to the Market and Kina–Quna Exchange. The summary describes cosmetic shop goods as aesthetic and consumables as earnable through regular play, while Daeva Pass rewards may combine cosmetics, items, upgrade materials, and other in-game currencies. AION2 Hub’s July 22, 2026 summary links to the July 8 notice and says the effect of the upgrade materials on gear progression was not clarified.

That distinction matters: an upgrade material could be a modest progression aid or a substantial competitive accelerator, depending on its scarcity, acquisition rate, and impact on gear. The published summary does not settle which applies. Nor does it provide a full current shop catalog, complete membership-benefit list, or pass reward table. NCSOFT’s global AION 2 site is the place to check current notices, but the available evidence does not support a definitive judgment about the live October 2026 global inventory.

Does the membership or pass make it pay-to-win?
The announced global membership gate for Market and Kina–Quna Exchange is relevant even if it does not itself sell combat power: restricting access to ordinary trading can affect how free players obtain or exchange resources. The size of that effect cannot be determined from the summary alone. For the pass, the decisive question is how much its upgrade materials change progression relative to what players can earn without paying; the available description does not answer that.

NCSOFT reported KRW 100 billion in cumulative revenue by January 3, 2026, 46 days after the Korea/Taiwan launch, and said more than one million characters had purchased memberships in that period. Those are company-reported business milestones, not measures of typical player spending or of any purchase-related power gap. NCSOFT’s January 7, 2026 roadmap release provides the figures; it does not establish how spending affected competition.

What players should check before spending
- Confirm that you are reading rules and shop details for your region and version; the Korea/Taiwan launch episode is not evidence of the current global catalog.
- For a membership, check whether it unlocks access only or also changes rates, limits, rewards, or progression.
- For a pass, inspect the actual reward track and compare upgrade materials with what can be earned in regular play.
- For any premium-currency exchange, check what the received gameplay currency can buy, including gear and upgrade resources.
- Revisit the official global notices and operation policy because a plan or summary is not a live catalog.
