Notion is the clearest fit when the writing project lives alongside briefs, plans, reference material, and team coordination. Its official pricing page describes AI tools for generating and editing documents and answering questions across the workspace. Those capabilities are plan-dependent: the page describes limited AI trials on some plans and more extensive AI, agent, and meeting features on Business. This makes Notion worth considering for collaborative work or writers who want AI integrated into the same workspace as their project materials. It does not mean every writer needs a paid plan, or that the workspace is a better drafting environment for every kind of manuscript.

Choose Obsidian for a free core app with optional services
Obsidian’s vendor describes its core app as “Free without limits.” Sync and Publish are separate services rather than required core-app subscriptions. Choose Scrivener for a manuscript assembled from sections
Scrivener is designed around long-form projects: you can write in sections of different sizes, rearrange them, view them as corkboard cards or in an outliner, and keep research materials alongside the editor. Its compile feature supports output formats including Word, PDF, Final Draft, and plain text. That feature set is particularly relevant when a draft’s structure is likely to change or when you need to produce a specific manuscript format.
