To address AI visibility, make sure important pages can be crawled and indexed, give them useful and distinctive information, keep key facts current, and measure performance separately on each platform. These steps improve eligibility and make your material more useful to answer systems; they cannot guarantee that an AI answer will cite or mention your site.
What AI visibility means—and why a site may be missing
AI visibility is whether relevant pages or brand information appear, are cited, or are used in generated answers on a particular search or assistant platform. It is not one universal ranking. A page may be eligible but not selected for a particular answer, and each platform draws on its own systems and sources.

For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, eligibility depends on being indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Google says its generative Search features remain grounded in Search, drawing on the Search index and retrieval, and may expand a prompt into related searches. Meeting technical requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. See Google’s documentation on AI features and your website.

How to make important pages eligible and useful
1. Check discovery, indexing, and snippet eligibility
Start with the pages that should answer important customer questions. Check that search crawlers can access them, that they are indexed, and that they can appear with a snippet. Review internal links so those pages are discoverable from elsewhere on your site. Make sure the information that matters is available as readable text, and that page experience and structured data are accurate. Structured data should match what visitors can actually see.
For Google, use Search Console’s indexing and performance reports to diagnose issues. Google’s documentation says activity from AI features is included in the overall Web search reporting; it does not describe that reporting as a complete ledger of every answer citation.

2. Improve the source material, not just its formatting
Answer genuine reader questions directly and accurately. Add original reporting, expertise, examples, useful comparisons, or first-hand experience when you truly have it. Use descriptive headings and clear sections to help people find the answer on the page.
Google’s advice is to create content that is helpful, reliable, people-first, and distinct from generic restatements. It warns that mass-producing pages without added value may violate its scaled content abuse policy. Its guide to generative AI features emphasizes that unique, compelling, useful content is more likely to matter over the long term than other suggestions in the guide.
Rank #3
3. Keep business facts current and aligned
If relevant to your business, keep Merchant Center and Business Profile details current, since Google identifies them as useful for relevant product listings and local business details in AI responses and Search. Keep claims on the page consistent with structured data so neither presents stale or conflicting information.
Should you add special AI files or markup?
For Google Search, Google says there are no special AI requirements or optimizations beyond its existing guidance. It does not require llms.txt, special AI schema, Markdown versions of pages, a particular content-chunk size, or exact wording for every query variation; its guide says it ignores llms.txt for Search visibility. Do not treat these as guaranteed ranking shortcuts. These statements apply to Google Search, not automatically to other platforms.
SEO is not obsolete: Google says its generative features rely on core Search ranking and quality systems. Nor is there evidence here that a particular change will raise citations by a specified amount across platforms. Results can depend on the site, query, platform, geography, and time.
Understand the visibility trade-off in crawler and preview controls
Google identifies robots.txt as a control over Googlebot access for Search crawling. Search preview controls include nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, and noindex, which can limit information shown in Search. Google-Extended is a separate control described for limiting use in some other Google systems. Before applying a control, decide whether the restriction is worth the possible loss of Search visibility or preview information; these settings do not create a positive visibility boost.

How to measure AI visibility without confusing metrics
Use first-party reports where available, and keep each platform’s measures separate. They describe different scopes; a citation count is not a universal score for rank, authority, clicks, or sales.

|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Search traffic to site pages, with AI feature activity included in the Web search type; relevant performance and diagnostic reports can help investigate the site. | The cited Google documentation describes aggregate reporting, not a guaranteed per-answer citation ledger. Set a useful baseline
For Google, begin with Search Console’s Web search reporting. For Microsoft-supported surfaces, check whether AI Performance is available in your Bing Webmaster Tools account. Microsoft announced the additional capabilities as a global preview on June 16, 2026; account availability can change, so confirm it in the account rather than assuming every feature is currently available to every site.
Microsoft describes AI answers as dynamic, contextual, and synthesized from multiple sources. Its report is intended to reveal citation patterns and context, not to turn a citation count into a measure of business success. Track distinct measures where a platform exposes them: cited pages, citation appearances, query or topic coverage, referral traffic, conversions, and brand mentions. Compare changes over time alongside relevant site outcomes.

Quick Recap
What AI visibility work cannot promise
- Technical eligibility does not guarantee a citation, recommendation, or ranking. Google says it does not guarantee that content will be crawled, indexed, or served.
- There is no established universal tactic that increases AI citations by a predictable amount across platforms.
- A third-party visibility report is not access to a platform’s internal ranking or AI systems.
- Google’s statements about Google Search should not be generalized to other assistants without platform-specific evidence.
