For an AI-generated video, choose the aspect ratio that fits where the clip will appear, then check the selected model and generation mode for supported settings. Set duration and resolution from the remaining options. These controls are not universal: a model may restrict resolution at longer durations, offer different ratios for text-to-video and image-to-video, or generate at one resolution and provide upscaling separately.
What the four settings control
Resolution: how many pixels the output contains
Resolution describes a video’s pixel dimensions or a named quality tier such as 720p or 1080p. Higher resolution means more output pixels, but it does not guarantee that every duration, aspect ratio, model, or generation mode is available at that tier. Some interfaces show dimensions; others show a tier or choose dimensions based on the frame shape.

Frame rate: how quickly frames play
Frame rate is measured in frames per second (fps). It describes the cadence of playback, not the clip’s duration or resolution. A generator may fix the frame rate or offer a small selection; do not assume that one product’s choices apply to another.

Duration is the running time of one generated clip. The available lengths may be fixed options or a selectable range, and a model may tie longer or shorter clips to particular resolution choices.

Aspect ratio: the shape of the frame
Aspect ratio compares width with height. Landscape 16:9 is common for widescreen video, portrait 9:16 for vertical viewing, and 1:1 for square layouts. Ratios such as 4:3, 3:4, and 21:9 may also be available. If you provide an image, changing its ratio can crop it or otherwise change how it fits; check the preview and keep important subjects away from the edges.
Choose settings in this order
- Pick the destination frame shape. Decide whether the clip needs to be landscape, portrait, square, or another shape for its intended placement. If you’re animating an image, check how the selected ratio frames that source before generating.
- Choose the model and generation mode. Check the specific model’s current controls for the mode you plan to use—text-to-video, image-to-video, or another mode. The available ratios and other settings may differ between modes, even within the same product.
- Set duration from the available choices. Choose a length that suits the shot and fits any model restrictions. If you need a particular resolution tier, check whether it limits the duration.
- Choose native output resolution, then consider upscaling. Use the highest native tier the model offers for your chosen settings when that detail is useful. Treat an optional upscale as a separate processing step, not proof that the video was generated natively at that resolution.
- Confirm frame rate and review the final combination. Check whether fps is fixed or selectable, then verify the complete set of options before starting generation. A setting listed by a vendor may not be available in every mode or combination.
How settings differ between documented models
These are vendor-published specifications, not independent performance tests. They illustrate why the model, interface and mode matter; they are not universal settings for AI video generators.

Google’s listed limits apply to Veo 3.1 through the Gemini API; they should not be taken as specifications for every Veo interface or variant. Likewise, Runway Gen-4.5’s ratio menu depends on whether you use text-to-video or image-to-video. Check the current documentation for the exact model and mode you are using.

A source image and output frame with different shapes cannot both fill the frame without some adjustment. Depending on the product, the image may be cropped or resized. Runway says Gen-4.5 accommodates an input image’s ratio by default, but choosing a different ratio may crop the image. Its API input documentation also cautions that assets that do not match a specified ratio may be center-cropped. Do not assume another generator handles mismatches the same way.

- Choose the output ratio before generating when the destination format is known.
- Inspect the framing preview if the tool provides one, especially for faces, text, and objects near the edges.
- If the result cuts off important content, use a source image composed for the target shape or select a ratio that better matches it.
Native resolution and upscaling are different
Native resolution is the size at which the generator creates the video. Upscaling enlarges an already generated video afterward; it can produce a larger file, but it does not mean the original generation was made at that output size.
Runway describes its generated video as 720p and offers optional upscaling to 4K. In its workflow, upscaling retains the video’s length, frame rate, and aspect ratio. Runway also says that 16:9 upscales from 720p or 1080p return 4096×2304, which is slightly wider than 3840×2160; exact UHD delivery may therefore require resizing in an editor. These details describe Runway’s workflow, not a general rule for every service. See Runway’s resolution and ratio guidance and its upscaling documentation.

How to compare generators for a particular project
Before committing to a model, compare the options that affect your deliverable—not just the largest resolution label:
