AI video generation is moving beyond text-only prompts: creators can pair instructions with still images, video references, or chosen start and end frames. The reference supplies visual information—such as composition or appearance—while text can describe the motion, camera movement, or change the shot should show. What each combination can do depends on the specific model and version.
What multimodal video generation changes
In text-to-video, a prompt has to describe the scene and leave the model to make many visual decisions. Multimodal workflows add another kind of input. A still can anchor a shot’s starting appearance; a video can guide composition; and first and last frames can define endpoints. Text remains useful for describing what happens between those visual cues.

These controls address different needs rather than forming one universal feature set. A reference image is not the same as a video reference, and neither guarantees an exact match. Check the named model’s supported inputs and controls instead of assuming that every feature offered in a platform’s catalog works with every model.

| Workflow | What the creator supplies | What it can help control |
|---|---|---|
| Text-to-video | A text prompt describing the scene, action, visual character, and often camera direction. | Broad creative direction; the model resolves many visual choices. |
| Image-to-video | A still image plus a prompt. | The image can anchor composition, subject, lighting, and style; the prompt can focus on motion and camera behavior. |
| First/last-frame control | Images specifying the beginning and end of a shot, where supported. | Endpoint composition and the transition between those frames. |
| Video reference or extension | An existing clip, or a generated clip to extend, depending on the model. | A reference clip can guide composition; extension continues a supported generated sequence. |
Some catalogs list combinations of text, image, video, and audio references for particular models. For example, Runway’s model catalog lists those reference types for MiniMax H3. That does not establish that every Runway model accepts them. Check the individual model entry in the Runway model catalog.

How do I turn an image into a video?
Choose an image that already has the subject and composition you want, then use a model that explicitly supports image-to-video. Treat the still as the visual anchor and write the prompt around the change you want to see. Runway’s image-to-video prompting guide recommends focusing the prompt mainly on motion rather than repeating what the image already shows.
- Select a suitable still. Use a clear image whose pose, framing, and visual details are compatible with the action you intend to request.
- Describe the motion. Name the subject’s action, any environmental movement, and the camera movement. Add direction, speed, or timing when those details matter.
- Keep the request consistent with the image. A pose or visual cue that implies one kind of movement may conflict with a prompt asking for another.
- Generate and refine. Change the motion instruction if the result misses the intended action. A reference can guide the result, but it does not guarantee exact consistency.
For example: “The camera slowly pushes in as the subject turns toward the window. The curtain moves gently in the breeze.” This describes camera, subject, and environmental motion without restating the still’s visible details.
How do I control motion in image to video?
Put the most important movement first, then specify secondary motion and camera behavior. Describe observable actions rather than relying on broad phrases such as “make it cinematic.” If timing, direction, or speed affects the shot, say so. The prompt should work with the reference image’s pose and implied movement, not against them.
Input quality matters: Runway notes that blur, artifacts, and implied motion in a still can affect the generated movement. A clean reference can reduce conflicting visual cues, but it cannot ensure a particular result. Iteration is part of the workflow, not proof that a model will reproduce motion exactly.

How do I make a video match a reference clip?
Look for a model or feature that explicitly accepts a video reference and identify what it uses that reference to control. Adobe’s July 17, 2025 announcement described a Firefly workflow for transferring composition from an uploaded reference video. That describes composition guidance; it should not be read as a guarantee that the generated video will copy every detail of the source clip. See Adobe’s announcement for the capabilities it reported at that date.
Video extension is a different operation: it continues an existing generated sequence rather than using a separate clip simply as a composition reference. Google’s Veo documentation describes extending Veo-generated video. Confirm the exact model and feature before planning a workflow around either kind of input.
How do first and last frames control a generated video?
When a model accepts both endpoint images, the first frame establishes the shot’s opening composition and the last frame establishes its intended ending. The model generates the intervening motion, so the endpoints constrain the shot without specifying every movement along the way.

What current product examples show
| Product or model | Documented example | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Veo 3.1 | Google documents image inputs, first- and last-frame inputs, and extension of generated video. | Extension is not supported in Veo 3.1 Lite, according to Google’s documentation. Verify current model details and access in the Veo documentation. |
| Runway Gen-4.5 | Runway’s developer catalog lists text-to-video and image-to-video. | Other catalog models have different reference and editing capabilities. Consult the model catalog for the specific model. |
| Adobe Firefly | Adobe’s July 17, 2025 announcement described reference-video composition, style presets, aspect ratios, and first/last-frame keyframe cropping. | Adobe also reported adding Runway Gen-4 and Google Veo with Audio in Firefly Boards, and Veo with Audio in Generate Video, at that time. This is a dated availability snapshot, not a statement of current access. |
| OpenAI Sora | Its product page describes historical text-to-video, image-to-video, and video extension or fill capabilities. | OpenAI states that Sora was no longer available as of April 26, 2026. Treat those capabilities as historical context, not a current option; see the Sora page. |
Capabilities, model catalogs, and access can change. Check current documentation for the exact model, version, region, and plan before choosing a workflow. A product-level announcement does not necessarily establish that a feature is available to every account or in every location.
How to compare video-generation models
Start with the controls your shot actually needs, not a broad claim that one model is “best.” The official materials cited here describe product features; they do not provide a neutral, matched-quality benchmark across providers.
- Inputs: Does the specific model accept text, still images, reference video, audio, or some combination?
- Reference behavior: Does an input guide appearance, composition, style, movement, or shot endpoints?
- Motion direction: Can prompts describe subject movement, environmental motion, camera behavior, timing, and speed?
- Editing and continuation: Can the workflow extend a generated clip or edit within an existing sequence?
- Output and access: Check supported output format and duration, plus current regional availability, plan access, and usage cost in the provider’s current materials.
- Sound: Confirm whether audio generation is available for the particular model and workflow; a product announcement about audio does not mean every model includes it.
Commercial use and rights need a separate check
Adobe has described its Firefly models as commercially safe and said they are trained on assets it has permission to use. Those are Adobe’s claims, not a substitute for checking the terms that apply to a particular product, plan, region, or project. Read the relevant product terms and consider the rights associated with any reference image or video you upload.
