AI can help brainstorm or create a YouTube thumbnail, but it cannot guarantee more views—or confirm that an image accurately represents your video. Use AI as a starting point, check the result against the video and YouTube’s rules, then compare eligible options with YouTube Studio’s Test & Compare.
Do thumbnails make a difference?
A thumbnail and title are often the first preview a viewer sees, so the image can help someone decide whether a video looks relevant. YouTube says 90% of its best-performing videos have custom thumbnails. YouTube does not state a publication year for that statistic, and it is descriptive: it does not prove that custom thumbnails caused those videos to perform well or predict what will happen to a particular upload.

A useful thumbnail sets an accurate expectation. A striking image that earns a click but does not match the video can disappoint viewers. YouTube says click-through rate (CTR) varies by content, audience, and traffic source; it is not a universal score or a guarantee of recommendation.
What AI can—and cannot—do for a thumbnail
Use it to explore concepts
YouTube’s Ask Studio can suggest thumbnail concepts based on a video’s transcript and themes. That can help creators develop visual directions, but YouTube’s description does not say the suggestions—or AI-generated images generally—are verified for factual accuracy, suitability, or policy compliance.

Review the image before publishing
Whether AI created the image or merely helped with it, check that people, events, products, outcomes, and implied claims are represented honestly. Confirm that the thumbnail does not promise content the video lacks and does not include imagery that violates YouTube’s rules. A human review matters especially when generated details could be mistaken for a real person, event, product, or result.
Design a clear, accurate thumbnail
Make the subject understandable at a glance
- Keep the composition simple enough to read quickly; too many competing details can overwhelm.
- If you use text, choose a legible font and keep the wording brief enough to remain readable at small sizes.
- Preview the image at the sizes viewers are likely to encounter on different devices.
- Choose a design for its audience and discovery context. Subscribers may already know your subject; casual viewers may need a clearer visual cue.
- Consider taking several photos while filming so you have authentic options to compare.
Use the correct dimensions and format
YouTube recommends making thumbnails as large as possible and using JPG or PNG. Its cited Help page recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio and 3840 × 2160 pixels for video thumbnails, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Shorts use a recommended 9:16 ratio and 2160 × 3840 pixels, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Podcast playlist thumbnails should be square (1:1).

These are YouTube Help recommendations and limits; check the current page for changes before uploading. For vertical videos, YouTube says a 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image remains on the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile platforms.

- Prepare the image. Export a clear JPG or PNG in the dimensions and file-size limits for the type of content. Check that small text and the main subject remain visible when the image is reduced.
- Open the video’s thumbnail settings. In YouTube Studio, open the video’s details and use the thumbnail section to upload a custom image. YouTube requires account verification for custom thumbnails.
- For Shorts, use a computer if uploading a custom thumbnail. YouTube’s cited Help page documents Shorts thumbnail upload through YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Review any AI suggestion. If Ask Studio suggests concepts from the transcript and themes, treat them as suggestions. Check each proposed image for accuracy, relevance, and compliance before selecting or adapting it.
- Check how the thumbnail appears. Preview it at small sizes and consider the vertical-video crop behavior before relying on a 16:9 image to appear unchanged everywhere.

Compare thumbnails with YouTube Test & Compare
Who can use the test
YouTube Studio’s Test & Compare can test up to three thumbnail options at the same time for eligible public long-form videos and podcast episodes. The cited eligibility excludes videos that are private, marked made for kids, or marked for mature audiences. The tool is documented as desktop-only, requires advanced features, and does not support Shorts.
How to run and interpret a comparison
- Make up to three credible options for the same video. Compare alternatives that differ in a meaningful way, such as subject clarity or text treatment, while keeping each accurate.
- Start Test & Compare in YouTube Studio on desktop. Follow the test controls for the eligible video and add the thumbnail options.
- Wait for the result. YouTube says a test may take a few days or as long as two weeks.
- Read the outcome carefully. “Winner” means YouTube found a clear outperformer with statistical significance under its process. “Preferred” means an option likely did better, but the result was not strong enough to call a confident winner. “None” means the options performed similarly.
The test evaluates watch-time share, not just clicks. YouTube says it chose that measure because it believes evaluating winning thumbnails by watch-time share will best support creators’ growth; that is YouTube’s explanation of its approach, not an independently verified outcome claim. A “Preferred” result is not a statistically certain winner.

Use analytics without chasing CTR alone
For routine review, YouTube recommends looking at Home and Suggested CTR during the first 24 hours for videos with above-average impressions that are reaching a general audience. For subscribers, it recommends looking at Subscriptions Feed CTR. Not every view or thumbnail exposure counts as an impression, so CTR should be read in context.

YouTube notes that high CTR paired with low average view duration can signal clickbait. Look at whether the image communicates the subject clearly, whether the video delivers on that expectation, and how viewing behavior changes across relevant traffic sources. A higher CTR by itself does not establish that an option is better.

Where thumbnails can cross YouTube’s rules
YouTube prohibits thumbnails that mislead viewers into expecting something that does not appear in the video. Its thumbnail rules and Community Guidelines also cover sexualized imagery, hate, violence, and harmful or dangerous content. Enforcement can include thumbnail removal or strikes; severe or repeated violations may have stronger account consequences, but not every mistake results in account termination.
- Do not use AI to depict an event, person, product, or result as real or present in the video when it is not.
- Do not imply a shocking reveal, outcome, or scene that the video does not contain.
- Check generated imagery for sexualized, hateful, violent, or harmful content before uploading.
- If a test option wins attention but misrepresents the video, do not use it.
