Flashcard apps are a strong fit for remembering discrete facts through active recall and spaced review. AI study apps can make it faster to turn your notes and other sources into practice material, but generated summaries or quizzes are not proof of learning. Choose based on whether the tool makes you retrieve, revisit, and check what you are studying.
What matters more than the app category
Learning depends less on whether an app is branded “AI” and more on what it asks you to do. Trying to answer from memory, then checking feedback, is different from rereading a summary or looking at a question-answer pair. Returning to material after a delay adds a separate benefit: it gives you another chance to retrieve it rather than seeing it only once.

A 2025 study in Learning and Instruction reported three experiments on retrieval practice and later application of complex concepts. In one experiment, 309 participants were assigned to short-answer retrieval with feedback, multiple-choice retrieval with feedback, restudy, or studying question-answer pairs. The later experiments involved 158 and 255 participants and included three rounds of retrieval practice followed by a one-week delayed test. The authors’ reported application-question effect sizes favored retrieval over restudy (d = 0.511) and retrieval over studying quiz questions and answers (d = 0.407). These are findings from particular experiments, not estimates of how much any app will improve a learner’s results. Read the study record.

Where flashcard apps fit best
Remembering bounded information
Flashcards work naturally for vocabulary, definitions, dates, labels, formulas, and other knowledge that can be tested with a clear prompt and answer. A card can also include media: Anki’s official page lists support for audio, images, video, scientific markup, and custom layouts. Anki’s official page describes a workflow in which learners rate how well they recalled a card and the app schedules its next review for when they are likely to forget it.
Building a continuing review habit
A dedicated review system is useful when you have a growing collection of material to revisit over days or weeks. With Anki, learners rate their recall and the scheduler uses that feedback to set a subsequent review. This is different from simply generating a deck: the value comes from doing the reviews and answering before revealing the answer.
One study is suggestive but should not be overgeneralized. A 2023 cohort-control study at Boonshoft School of Medicine followed first-year students during the 2021–2022 academic year. Of 130 students enrolled in an Anki training program, 78 reported using Anki for at least one exam and 52 did not use it for an exam. Anki users scored higher on four exams: by 6.4% on Course I, 6.2% on Course II, 7.0% on Course III, and 12.9% on the Comprehensive Basic Science Exam. The researchers described Anki use as something that “may be associated” with higher scores; students were not randomly assigned to use it, the study was at one US medical school, and the authors noted limits to generalizability. It does not establish that Anki alone caused the differences or predict results in other subjects. Read the study.

A well-made card can test a prerequisite fact, but a deck of isolated prompts is not necessarily enough for complex problem solving. If you need to apply a concept in an unfamiliar situation, pair cards with worked examples, explanations, and practice on new problems. Retrieval practice can support application, as the 2025 experiments above indicate, but they do not show that one commercial flashcard app teaches transfer better than an AI study app.

Where AI study apps fit best
Turning source material into a first draft of practice
AI study tools can reduce the work of converting notes, documents, or class sources into summaries, flashcards, quizzes, or conversational explanations. For example, Google’s November 6, 2025 announcement for the NotebookLM app described creating flashcards and quizzes from selected sources, choosing topics and difficulty, setting the number of cards or questions, and selecting or unselecting sources while chatting or generating material. That announcement documents product functionality, not a controlled learning outcome. See Google’s announcement.
Checking generated material
Generated questions and answers should be treated as drafts. Check them against your course notes or textbook, correct errors, and rewrite vague prompts so there is a clear answer to retrieve. Less preparation time is useful only if the saved time goes toward checking the material and practicing it.
The categories also overlap: an AI study workspace may generate flashcards and quizzes. The more practical distinction is often between a tool that helps produce study material and a review system that manages repeated retrieval over time—not simply AI versus flashcards.

- COMPREHENSIVE DOUBLE-SIDED CONTENT STRATEGY – Every card utilizes both front and back surfaces to provide a complete cognitive framework. The front delivers clear, actionable steps ("How to Do It") and "Pro-Tips" for immediate execution, while the back dives deeper into "When to Use" and the psychology of "Why It Works." This full-context approach helps users understand their brain mechanics while taking action.
- PORTABLE "ON-THE-GO" DESIGN WITH BINDER RING – Designed for real-world accessibility, each card features a pre-punched hole and includes a sturdy metal ring. Instead of keeping your tools hidden in a box, you can curate a personalized set of daily strategies to clip onto a backpack, keychain, or planner. This visual accessibility ensures your coping skills are always within reach whenever anxiety or distraction strikes.
- INNOVATIVE APP INTEGRATION ON EVERY CARD – We bridge the gap between analog tools and digital efficiency. Each card features a curated "App Suggestion" specific to that coping skill (e.g., recommending a specific timer app for Time Blocking). This modern feature maximizes effectiveness by pairing physical cues with the best digital technology available to support your workflow.
- ADHD ORGANIZATION & EXECUTIVE FUNCTION TOOLS – Acting as a portable ADHD organization product for your brain, this deck targets executive dysfunction head-on. Essential skills like "The Focus Block Method" and "Task Chunking" help externalize time management and reduce decision fatigue. These visual aids trigger dopamine release, turning overwhelming chaos into structured, manageable achievements.
- VERSATILE MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCE FOR ADULTS & TEENS – Scientifically grounded and visually engaging, these flashcards are ideal for self-improvement, school counseling, or therapy sessions. Whether used by a student to manage study stress or a professional to boost productivity, this toolkit offers structured support to regulate emotions and master daily tasks.
- Retrieval: Can you try to recall an answer before it is shown, or does the tool mainly summarize and display information?
- Spacing: Does it bring back difficult material after a delay and support ongoing review?
- Source grounding: Can generated material be traced to the notes or documents you selected, and can you check and edit it?
- Learning target: Is the goal to remember discrete facts, or to explain and apply ideas in new situations?
- Preparation cost: Does the tool reduce the time needed to make useful practice questions, and will you use some of that time to verify them?
- Consistency: Which workflow can you use regularly and accurately? Features do not help if the routine is too cumbersome to maintain.
- Practical fit: Check current platform support, synchronization, price, offline access, and export options for the specific app before committing.
Which workflow suits your situation?
Choose a dedicated flashcard workflow
Use one when you have a growing set of terms or facts to retain, want scheduled reviews, and are willing to create or curate concise, accurate cards.
Choose an AI study workspace
Use one when your main bottleneck is turning a large collection of notes or class sources into initial practice materials or varied questions. Check generated items before relying on them.
Combine them
If your AI tool can draft prompts and a spaced-repetition system can manage later review, use each for that role. Edit the cards for accuracy, ambiguity, and answers that are too broad before adding them to a deck.
For complex or applied subjects
Use cards for prerequisite knowledge, then practice explaining concepts, following worked examples, and solving new problems. App choice should support the kind of performance your course requires, not just make a large deck or a polished summary.

What the available evidence does—and does not—settle
The evidence described here supports retrieval practice as a learning mechanism and includes one school-specific study associating Anki use with higher exam scores. It also documents AI features for generating practice material. It does not establish that modern AI study apps as a category outperform dedicated spaced-repetition apps, or the reverse.
Other study records do not resolve that head-to-head question. A 2024 PubMed record identifies a randomized trial of a mobile spaced-repetition flashcard app among dental students, but the result details available in the record are not enough to report an outcome or effect size. View the PubMed record. A 2024 study compared digital academic-vocabulary flashcards on computers and smartphones with paper flashcards among Iranian undergraduates; the available information does not establish which format performed better. View the study.
Nor should reminders, streaks, or time spent in an app be mistaken for retention. A 2024 npj Science of Learning study of 85 lower-secondary students using a vocabulary app described smartphone study reminders as a potential double-edged sword. Read the study.
