Investment totals, workplace adoption surveys and estimates of consumer benefit measure different things, so they should be read separately rather than added together.
What is the projected size of the AI market in 2026?
Gartner’s September 16, 2026 forecast puts worldwide AI spending at $2.7 trillion for the year. Its detailed table gives a total of $2,670,460 million, with growth of 49.5% over 2025. This is a forecast, not a final observed total. Gartner’s broad definition includes multiple AI categories; it is not a measure of software revenue alone or of private investment.

|---|---|---|
| Worldwide AI spending forecast | $2.7 trillion for 2026; $2,670,460 million in Gartner’s detailed table; 49.5% year-over-year growth | Gartner forecast, published September 16, 2026. Expected spending across its broad AI market definition, not audited actual spending. |
| AI infrastructure spending forecast | $1,484,397 million for 2026; about 55.6% of Gartner’s forecast total, calculated from the two figures | Gartner forecast, 2026. Its infrastructure category includes AI-optimized infrastructure and related technologies; it is not limited to data centers. |
What do AI investment figures show?
Investment counts financing and corporate transactions. It is not interchangeable with Gartner’s spending forecast or with revenue earned by AI vendors.

| Global corporate AI investment | $581.69 billion in 2025 | Stanford HAI’s 2026 AI Index. The total includes private investment and mergers and acquisitions; it is not market revenue. |
| Private AI investment worldwide | $344.66 billion in 2025 | Component of the global corporate AI investment total, as reported by Stanford HAI in 2026. |
| AI mergers and acquisitions | $214.44 billion in 2025 | Component of the global corporate AI investment total, as reported by Stanford HAI in 2026. |
| U.S. and China private AI investment | United States: $285.88 billion; China: $12.41 billion in 2025 | Stanford HAI’s 2026 report. Stanford cautions that China’s private-investment figure may understate its broader AI spending because government-backed sources are excluded. |
How widely are organizations using AI?
The organizational figures below come from a McKinsey survey reported by Stanford HAI in its 2026 AI Index. They are self-reported survey results, not a census. “Use” means use in at least one business function; these figures do not establish how frequently or deeply each organization uses AI, or whether it has achieved a financial return.

| Survey measure | 2025 | 2024 | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organizations reporting AI use | 88% | 78% | Surveyed organizations reporting AI use in at least one business function. |
| Organizations reporting regular generative AI use | 79% | 71% | Surveyed organizations reporting regular generative AI use in at least one business function. This is a narrower measure than overall AI use. |
How many people use generative AI?
Stanford HAI’s 2026 report estimates that generative AI reached 53% population adoption within three years. This is a population-level adoption measure, not a workplace deployment rate. Adoption varies substantially by country, so the global figure should not be assumed to describe any particular country, age group or demographic.

Stanford HAI and the Stanford Digital Economy Lab estimated annual U.S. consumer surplus from generative AI at $172 billion by early 2026. Consumer surplus is an estimate of the value people receive beyond what they pay; it is not spending, company revenue or investment. The related study used online choice experiments with representative samples of U.S. adults in July 2025 and March 2026.

What do these statistics say about AI trends?
- Infrastructure is the largest spending category in Gartner’s outlook. The forecast assigns a little over half of its total to AI infrastructure. Gartner attributes continued demand to providers building capacity for anticipated workloads. That outlook is not proof that every planned project will be completed or earn a return.
- Organizational reach and business impact are different questions. A report of use in one business function establishes some adoption, but not broad deployment, productivity gains or profitability.
- Investment, spending and consumer benefit have different boundaries. Corporate investment counts financing and transactions; the Gartner forecast estimates spending across its market categories; consumer surplus estimates welfare. Combining them into a single “AI market” total would be misleading.
- Forecasts can change between releases. Gartner issued multiple 2026 forecast vintages. The September release is the latest located estimate here; revisions are changes in projections, not a time series of actual spending.
How should you compare AI statistics?
- Check whether a number describes projected spending, completed investment, survey-reported adoption or estimated consumer welfare.
- Confirm the geography, population and measurement period. A global adoption estimate does not describe every country, and U.S. consumer-welfare estimates are not global market totals.
- Read the category definition. Gartner’s broad forecast is not equivalent to software revenue, and private investment does not capture every form of public or government-backed spending.
- For survey results, check who was surveyed and what counts as use. The organizational figures here are self-reported and count use in at least one function.
- Keep the publication date attached to forecasts. A revised forecast is not evidence that the earlier estimate was actual spending.
