RTINGS reports strong dark-room contrast, bright SDR performance and capable gaming features, but also some blooming, narrow viewing angles and difficulty handling glare. It can suit a centered viewing setup, but because it has been superseded, its value today depends on the exact listing price, condition and warranty.
What the Sony XR-65X90K is
Sony classifies the XR-65X90K as a BRAVIA XR Full Array LED 4K HDR television with Google TV. Sony Canada lists the screen as 65 inches, or 64.5 inches viewable; that specification comes from regional documentation, so check local product details if buying outside Canada. Sony’s US support page identifies the exact model, and Sony Canada’s specifications page provides the regional screen-size detail.

It is a 2022 model, not a current-generation X90-series television. RTINGS says Sony replaced the X90K family with the X90L/X90CL in 2023. The review is for the X90K/X90CK family rather than an independently documented test of this specific 65-inch unit, so its performance findings should be understood as review findings for that family. RTINGS also notes that its results use an older test methodology and may not be directly comparable with televisions tested under its later methodology. Its page reports a retest dated September 26, 2025. RTINGS’ Sony X90K/X90CK review explains its findings and review context.
Picture quality: strongest in a darker, centered setup
Dark-room contrast and blooming
RTINGS reports strong contrast for dark-room viewing, a useful quality for films and shows watched with the lights down. It also reports some blooming: bright objects can produce a visible halo against darker areas. That tradeoff matters most in scenes with small highlights, subtitles or bright interface elements against a dark background. The review’s findings are not measurements made for this article.

Bright-room viewing and glare
RTINGS reports strong SDR peak brightness, but says the TV has difficulty overcoming glare from bright windows or lights. Brightness alone does not guarantee a clear picture when direct reflections reach the screen. If the room has substantial daylight or lamps facing the TV, consider whether you can control the light or position the screen away from reflections before choosing this model.
Seating position
RTINGS identifies limited viewing angles as a drawback. Picture quality may be less suitable for viewers seated far to the sides than for a household watching from directly in front. A wide sofa or multiple seating rows therefore makes this a less compelling fit than a setup where most viewers sit near the center.

Gaming features
RTINGS considers the X90K good for gaming, citing HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, variable refresh rate (VRR), quick response time and low input lag. Those features make it a capable option for compatible modern gaming devices. The review does not establish a platform-specific performance result here, so check the exact console or PC connection needs and the TV’s documentation for the configuration you plan to use.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Who should consider the XR-65X90K?
- Consider it if you want a 65-inch Sony 4K TV for mostly centered seating, often watch in a darker room, and value the gaming features RTINGS reports.
- Look elsewhere if viewers regularly sit at wide angles, your room has difficult-to-control glare, or you are particularly sensitive to blooming in dark scenes.
- Compare alternatives if the price is close to a newer model. The X90K is an older generation, so compare current options on room performance, gaming features, price, condition and warranty rather than assuming the older TV is a bargain.
Is it still worth buying?
There is no established live price or availability for the XR-65X90K here, so a blanket value verdict would be misleading. Before buying, confirm that the listing is for the exact 65-inch XR-65X90K, not another X90K size or related model, and verify whether it is new, refurbished or used. Check the seller’s warranty and return terms, then compare the total price with current alternatives—especially the successor generation. The older model makes most sense when its verified condition and price compensate for its age and its known viewing-angle and glare limitations.
