AI Search Visibility: Build a Distinctive Category, Not Just Rankings

Google’s AI Search guidance keeps SEO fundamentals in play. A clear, credible category position can make your business easier to understand—but cannot guarantee a citation or replace Search readiness.

For visibility in Google’s generative Search features, keep doing sound SEO—but do not make rankings your whole strategy. Make your business easy to find and understand, then build a credible point of view around the customer problem you solve and why your approach is meaningfully different. Category strategy can sharpen that position; it does not replace SEO or guarantee an AI-generated answer will cite you.

What does Google say about appearing in AI Search?

Google’s guidance says its generative Search features draw on the same core Search ranking and quality systems as its other Search experiences. Google describes retrieving relevant, up-to-date pages from its Search index and using information from them to generate responses with supporting links. For a broad question, a model may also use “query fan-out”—issuing related searches to gather information on different aspects of the topic.

In a May 15, 2026 announcement, Google Search’s John Mueller put the practical implication plainly: “The best practices for SEO remain relevant and foundational to success with our generative AI features.” That is a statement about Google’s published guidance, not a promise that any particular SEO tactic will earn a citation.

Google’s guide recommends useful, original content that gives its intended audience value rather than repeating commodity information. It also says a page must meet Search technical requirements and be eligible for a Search snippet. Clear site organization and crawlability matter, but meeting requirements does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page.

Should you optimize rankings or define a category?

These are different jobs, not competing shortcuts. SEO helps make relevant pages accessible and understandable to Search systems and people. Category strategy helps customers understand what kind of solution you offer, what problem it addresses, and why it differs from alternatives. A clear category position may give your content a more distinctive point of view, but the reviewed strategy literature does not establish that category-first companies reliably outperform SEO or receive more AI citations.

Question SEO and Search readiness Category definition
What is it for? Helping relevant pages meet Search requirements and reach people looking for useful information. Helping customers make sense of the market, the problem, and your offering’s distinct position.
What should you examine? Technical eligibility, crawlability, site organization, and whether content is useful and original. Customer problem, existing alternatives, target audience, differentiation, and whether the business can deliver on its claim.
What can it establish? A foundation for Search visibility; not guaranteed crawling, indexing, ranking, or inclusion in an AI response. A more deliberate market position; not proof that a new market exists or that Search visibility will improve.

Google reported more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews and more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode in an announcement published June 3, 2026, and updated August 31, 2026. Those are Google’s figures for its own products. They do not independently measure all AI-search use, publisher referrals, or business outcomes, so they are context for the scale of Google’s features—not evidence that a category strategy wins citations.

How do you define a category without just renaming your product?

Start with the market as customers experience it, not with a label you hope they will adopt. The academic review by Rodolphe Durand and Mukti Khaire distinguishes the emergence of market categories from deliberate attempts to create them. That distinction is useful: companies can try to shape how a market is understood, but naming a category does not make it real.

  1. Specify the customer problem. Describe the situation customers are trying to change, in terms they would recognize.
  2. Map the alternatives. Include how customers solve the problem now, including doing nothing or combining existing options. This clarifies whether your proposed category reflects a real distinction.
  3. Define the audience and difference. Say who the offering is for and what makes it meaningfully different from the relevant alternatives. Avoid broad claims that blur the boundary.
  4. Check that the business can deliver. Test whether the product, business model, and company capabilities support the position. A new name for a familiar offer is not, on its own, a defensible new market.
  5. Make the claim legible in public. Explain the problem, the offering, and its limits consistently across useful pages, product information, and other material customers can evaluate.

This is a practical synthesis of category strategy research, not a validated universal formula. Harvard Business Review’s 2019 commentary by Eddie Yoon, Christopher Lochhead, and Nicolas Cole cautions against treating category creation as synonymous with being first: its summary points to factors beyond a breakthrough product, including business-model innovation and a broader market shift. That is expert commentary, not a guarantee or universal recipe.

How can you tell whether your position is distinctive and understandable?

One useful lens comes from a 2015 Harvard Business Review brand-strategy article: assess both centrality and distinctiveness. Centrality asks whether customers understand you as relevant to the market they care about; distinctiveness asks whether they see a meaningful difference. The article describes using customer perceptions and market performance to map brands, while noting that geography and target segment can change the result.

  • Clarify the comparison set. Specify the geography, customer segment, and alternatives. A position that is distinctive in one market may be ordinary in another.
  • Check customer understanding. Ask whether intended customers can explain what problem you solve and how your offer differs without relying on your preferred label.
  • Look for evidence, not just slogans. Compare the position you claim with the product, business model, and customer experience you can substantiate.

A category claim is more useful when it makes the business easier to understand and evaluate. If customers cannot recognize the problem or see why your solution differs, stronger naming alone is unlikely to fix the gap.

Do you need GEO, AEO, or special AI-search tactics?

You do not need a separate set of technical tricks for Google’s generative Search features, according to Google’s guidance. Google says special AI markup or an llms.txt file is not required; it does not prescribe an ideal page length, require every page to be broken into tiny chunks, or ask sites to rewrite content in a special AI style. It also does not present inauthentic mentions as a route to inclusion. Structured data is not required for generative-AI Search, though it may still be useful for eligibility for ordinary rich results.

Labels such as GEO and AEO may describe people’s approaches to optimizing for generative or answer-focused systems, but the label itself does not establish a new requirement in Google’s documentation. Prioritize clear, technically accessible pages and genuinely useful information over tactics that promise a special route into an AI answer.

How should you measure AI Search visibility?

Google says Search Console’s generative-AI performance report can show how content performs across its generative-AI Search features. Treat it as the documented first-party view for those features, rather than assuming a third-party tracker has access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems.

If you use an external visibility tracker, evaluate what it actually observes and how it produces its results. Use it as a workflow aid with clear methodological limits, not as an authoritative measure of Google’s private systems. Search performance data can help you assess visibility; it cannot by itself show that category definition caused a change.
