AI is helping drive cybersecurity acquisitions, but it is one factor in a broader buying cycle—not a proven explanation for every deal or the dominant cause of the boom. Buyers are also seeking identity, cloud, exposure-management, data-protection, OT/IoT, browser-security and AI-agent-governance capabilities, while consolidating products into broader platforms.
The scale is clear, but the precise deal count depends on the tracker: 2025 totals cited by SecurityWeek, Momentum Cyber and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer differ. For 2026, Momentum Cyber forecast more deals than in 2025, while Kroll’s reported first-quarter figures show why a forecast should not be mistaken for a full-year result.

Is AI driving a cybersecurity M&A boom?
Yes, in part. Dark Reading, citing Momentum Cyber, attributed its projection for higher 2026 deal volume to demand for security products built with AI and capabilities to protect organizations using agentic AI. Kroll and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer (HSF Kramer) also identify AI-related defense or adoption as part of the deal rationale.

How many cybersecurity acquisitions happened in 2025?
There is no single uncontested count in these reports. SecurityWeek counted 426 announced cybersecurity M&A deals in 2025; Momentum Cyber counted 404, as reported by Dark Reading; and HSF Kramer described the total as more than 400. These are tracker-attributed figures, not a harmonized census, so they should not be averaged or treated as directly interchangeable.

The differences can reflect tracker coverage, whether a source counts announcements or completed transactions, and how much deal value is disclosed. A few very large transactions can also shift aggregate value far more than they change the number of deals. HSF Kramer’s excerpt does not state a comparable deal-value denominator, so its growth figure should not be combined with the other sources’ totals.
What do the 2026 figures say so far?
Momentum Cyber projected 450 cybersecurity M&A deals in 2026, compared with its 404-deal count for 2025, as reported by Dark Reading in 2026. That is a forecast, not a final 2026 result. Kroll reported 75 announced transactions and $2.2 billion in disclosed value for the first quarter of 2026. Kroll described that quarter’s activity as concentrated in lower- and mid-market deals, with none exceeding $1 billion.

Kroll’s summer update described second-quarter deal volume as resilient, but highlighted multiple strategic themes rather than establishing a full-year total. The available figures therefore offer a snapshot, not a basis for claiming that the 2026 forecast has been met.

Recent deal examples reported by SecurityWeek show different buyer types and strategic additions. The amounts below are reported transaction values; the source excerpt does not establish the completion status of every deal.

The deal examples are not all evidence of an AI-led buying spree. Kroll’s Spring 2026 update identifies identity security, AI-enabled defense, exposure management and cloud security as areas of interest. Its Summer update adds OT and IoT security, browser security, identity security and governance for AI agents. HSF Kramer similarly points to platform acquisitions and consolidation around identity, cloud and AI-driven security.

AI defense and AI-agent governance
As organizations adopt AI systems and agents, security buyers may seek tools to protect those systems, control access and address associated risks. The reported interest includes both AI-enabled defense and security for agentic AI. Those are related but distinct acquisition rationales: one uses AI in security products; the other addresses the security needs created by AI adoption.
Identity, cloud and exposure management
Identity and cloud security are recurring platform priorities, while exposure management helps organizations identify and prioritize security weaknesses across their environments. Buying these capabilities can broaden an existing product suite, although the strategic fit does not guarantee that separate products will be integrated successfully.
OT/IoT, browser security and data protection
Kroll’s summer themes include protection for operational technology and connected devices, browser security, and AI-agent governance. SecurityWeek’s deal list also includes the reported Veeam–Securiti AI transaction, illustrating that data protection is part of the acquisition landscape as well. Together, these areas show why the market cannot be reduced to AI alone.

Why can deal value rise faster than deal volume?
Deal count and aggregate transaction value measure different things. If many acquisitions are small or mid-market, quarterly volume can remain active while disclosed value is modest. Conversely, a small number of very large agreements can cause total value to surge without a comparable increase in the number of deals.
That concentration is visible in SecurityWeek’s reported examples: the Google–Wiz agreement at $32 billion and Palo Alto Networks–CyberArk deal at $25 billion sit far above the smaller transactions in the same list. Differences in what trackers include, whether values are disclosed, and whether they track announcements or closings further complicate year-to-year comparisons.
What should readers take from the acquisition trend?
Evaluate a cybersecurity acquisition by asking what capability it adds, what kind of buyer is pursuing it, how it fits the buyer’s existing platform, and what transaction value has actually been disclosed. The strategic themes reported across these sources point to a market shaped by AI as well as platform consolidation and demand across multiple security categories.
Kroll’s Cybersecurity Sector Update – Spring 2026 captures the platform rationale: “As organizations shift from reactive threat management to risk driven security models, strategic acquisitions will continue to play a central role in shaping the next phase of cybersecurity platform evolution.”
The evidence supports a cybersecurity M&A boom in which AI is an important element, not a demonstrated single cause. It does not establish a definitive industry-wide 2025 deal total or the share of acquisitions specifically attributable to AI.
