To manage what AI assistants say about you, check each one separately, inspect the sources behind its answers, and correct inaccurate information on reliable pages you control. You can improve the information available to them, but you cannot dictate their responses or guarantee when an answer will change. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT search citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect, and Google says Gemini may give inaccurate or inappropriate answers about people.
What AI reputation management means
AI reputation management is the ongoing practice of checking how AI assistants describe a person, company, product, or local business—and whether the sources they cite support those descriptions. It is not a way to control a model’s output. The same assistant can respond differently depending on the prompt and whether it has access to search or other grounding, while different assistants may draw on different sources.

For a business, the practical work often includes keeping its website, business details, and listings accurate. Individuals may have less influence over third-party pages that mention them. In either case, a polished answer is not proof of accuracy: OpenAI advises users to treat ChatGPT as a first draft rather than a final source, and Google recommends double-checking Gemini’s responses about people.
Does ChatGPT tell the truth, and what does Gemini say about me?
Neither question has a single dependable answer. ChatGPT and Gemini can produce useful summaries, but they can also omit context, repeat outdated information, or make unsupported claims. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can give overconfident answers and fabricate citations; Google cautions that Gemini Apps may provide inaccurate or inappropriate responses about people. Perplexity and other assistants also need to be checked answer by answer rather than assumed accurate.
#1 Best Overall
A citation is a lead to investigate, not a guarantee that the answer is correct. OpenAI states: “Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.” Open the cited page and confirm that it actually supports the associated claim. A source can be genuine but stale, incomplete, or unrelated to the wording the assistant has attached to it.
How to check what AI says about you or your business
- Choose representative questions. Write the questions a person might naturally ask about you, your company, product, or local business. Include straightforward factual questions and comparison questions. Keep the wording stable when you repeat the check.
- Test each assistant separately. Ask the same questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Record the date, exact prompt, answer, assistant, and every citation. Note the location or market if it could affect the answer, and whether search or grounding was enabled.
- Check each claim against its source. Open the cited pages and assess whether they support the specific claim. Record factual errors, outdated details, missing context, and assertions without a supporting citation as separate issues.
- Correct information where you can. Update reliable pages you control, such as your official site, and maintain accurate business profiles and listings where relevant. If an error comes from a third-party page, you may have less direct control; correct the record through the page owner’s available process where appropriate.
- Repeat the same checks later. Save dated records and compare them over time. You can report that an answer changed after an update, but that observation alone does not prove the update caused the change.
For a serious damaging claim about an individual, preserve the exact answer, date, and citations before changing pages or accounts. The sources cited here provide general accuracy advice, not jurisdiction-specific legal or crisis guidance.

How the three assistants can differ
Compare outputs across several dimensions instead of reducing them to a single visibility score. Record whether search was enabled, the exact prompt, date and relevant geography, what the assistant said, whether it cited sources, whether those sources supported the claims, how current the underlying pages were, and whether the same error appeared on a later check.
A 2025 Yext study illustrates why source patterns should be treated as dependent on the sample, not as a permanent platform ranking. Yext analyzed 6.8 million AI citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Its methodology describes 1.6 million queries per model collected from July 1 to August 31, 2025, across four intent groupings and four industries, using its platform and thousands of client and prospect locations worldwide. In that dataset, 86% of citations came from brand-controlled or managed sources; 44% were from first-party websites, 42% from listings, and 8% from reviews or social sources. Yext also reported that Reddit and similar forums accounted for 2% of citations.
Rank #3
Those figures describe Yext’s query, industry, location, and collection sample. They do not establish which source type every assistant will use for every person, question, or market, nor do they show that one assistant is universally more accurate or more influential for reputation. Yext Chief Data Officer Christian J. Ward said, “The message for marketers is that the most impactful sources are the very ones they can already control or influence.” That is a vendor executive’s interpretation of the study, not a guarantee that updating a controlled source will change a particular answer.
What businesses can do to improve the information available
For Google’s generative AI features in Search, Google points to established SEO practices rather than special AI shortcuts. Its guidance emphasizes useful, distinctive content and clear technical structure. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search to be considered for generative AI features, but indexing and serving are not guaranteed. Google does not recommend inauthentic mentions or special AI markup as shortcuts.
Google Search Central puts the content point plainly: “Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website’s presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions in this guide.” Google also says Business Profiles can help businesses be visible in AI responses and Search. These are ways to make accurate information available, not mechanisms to force a preferred answer or promise a result on a particular timeline.
Can monitoring software control an AI answer?
No evidence cited here shows that monitoring tools can control model outputs. They can help organize observation and follow-up. Reputation.com describes its AI Reputation Manager as a workflow for asking tailored questions, analyzing generated responses, identifying gaps or misinformation, and acting on brand messaging. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independently verified outcomes. Such a service may be useful for organizing repeated checks, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that a correction will appear in an assistant’s answer.
