IMF Finds More Than Half of Sampled Tokenized US Stock Trading Happens After Hours

More than half of trading in the tokenized US equity products analyzed by the International Monetary Fund reportedly took place outside regular US stock-market hours. The finding, attributed to the IMF’s October 2026 Global Financial Stability Report, concerns a limited sample—not all US stock trading, and not necessarily every tokenized-equity venue.

What the IMF finding says—and what it does not

Secondary reports attribute the after-hours statistic to Chapter 3 of the IMF’s Global Financial Stability Report, October 2026, titled “Scaling Tokenization: New Efficiencies, New Vulnerabilities.” The report was published October 12, 2026. The IMF catalog confirms the chapter and report details, but the chapter text was not accessible for verification here. IMF eLibrary report record

Coverage describes the analysis as involving five liquid tokenized US equity products across 11 venues over 365 days. Those sample details, like the headline statistic, are reported by secondary sources and should not be treated as fully verified methodology without the chapter. The exact share above 50%, product selection, definition of “outside regular hours,” and calculation are not established by the accessible primary record. The statistic is about trading activity in the analyzed tokenized products. It does not mean that most US stocks, or most trading in the conventional US equity market, occurs after the exchange closes. Nor does after-hours activity alone show that these products had deep liquidity, tight spreads, prices closely aligned with underlying securities, or broad investor adoption.

Why tokenized equity trading can continue when exchanges close

Tokenization records and transfers assets, or claims linked to them, on shared programmable ledgers. Such systems can support trading and transfer outside the operating hours of conventional exchanges, depending on the venue and instrument. The IMF’s 2025 Fintech Note describes possible reductions in frictions across issuance, servicing, redemption, trading, and settlement, while also identifying risks from greater interconnection, thin liquidity buffers, leverage, faulty code, and network effects. IMF, “Tokenization and Financial Market Inefficiencies”

That flexibility changes when liquidity is needed. In a July 2026 IMF blog, Tobias Adrian says tokenized securities can integrate trading, settlement, custody, and compliance workflows, but also make liquidity demands continuous and allow failures to propagate faster. He emphasizes that legal foundations determine questions such as ownership, settlement finality, and jurisdiction. IMF blog, July 2, 2026

How to interpret after-hours activity

Trading availability is not the same as liquidity

A market can accept orders around the clock yet have few buyers and sellers at a particular moment. A trade occurring outside regular exchange hours proves activity, not that a user can transact large amounts without moving the price or paying a wider spread. The reported statistic does not establish spreads, order-book depth, execution quality, or the ability to exit during stressed conditions.

Prices may not track the underlying share continuously

When the conventional market for an underlying stock is closed, its latest exchange price may be stale. A tokenized product’s price can still move as buyers and sellers trade, but the headline finding does not explain how those prices were formed or how closely they tracked the underlying security during closed hours. The accessible sources do not provide a verified comparison of price alignment.

A token does not automatically confer ordinary shareholder rights

“Tokenized equity” can describe different legal and technical arrangements. A token may represent exposure linked to a share without giving its holder the same ownership, voting, dividend, custody, or investor-protection rights as a directly held share. The rights depend on the specific instrument’s terms and governing legal structure; the reported IMF sample does not establish the terms of each product.

What the finding means for investors and markets

For investors, the central implication is that tokenized equity activity may extend beyond the hours when conventional US exchanges are open. That can offer more opportunities to trade, but it does not make every instrument continuously liquid or equivalent to an exchange-listed share. Before evaluating a particular product, readers need its legal terms, the source and timing of its reference price, its trading and settlement arrangements, and how custody and redemptions work.

For financial stability, the IMF’s broader analysis points to a trade-off: shared programmable infrastructure may reduce some transaction and settlement frictions, while tighter links among trading, settlement, custody, and compliance can transmit operational or liquidity shocks more quickly. Continuous activity also means that liquidity needs do not stop when traditional markets close. The after-hours statistic is evidence of trading beyond conventional hours in a reported sample; on its own, it does not measure the scale of those risks or establish that tokenization has improved market quality.

What remains unconfirmed

  • The exact percentage of sampled trading that occurred outside regular US market hours.
  • The IMF chapter’s precise sample definition, venue and product selection, observation period, and calculation method.
  • How the sampled products’ after-hours prices, spreads, liquidity, settlement, and legal rights compared with conventional exchange trading.

Secondary coverage reports that the five products tracked exposures including the S&P 500, Nasdaq, Tesla, Google, and Nvidia. Those examples do not establish that each exposure was a separate instrument or that the sample represented the broader tokenized-equity market. Unchained report
