They are already part of a large robotics industry, but global robot totals do not reveal how many use AI. The future is less about one robot shape taking over and more about making different machines capable, safe, reliable, and worthwhile for specific tasks.
What makes a robot AI-powered?
“AI-powered robot” is a broad description, not a formal robot category. It generally means a physical robot uses AI as part of its perception or decision-making—for example, to interpret sensor input or select an action. The robot’s capabilities still depend on its sensors, mechanics, control systems, software, and surroundings. AI does not remove those physical and safety constraints.

The International Federation of Robotics (IFR), citing ISO definitions, describes an industrial robot as an automatically controlled, reprogrammable multipurpose manipulator programmable in three or more axes. It describes a service robot as one used personally or professionally to perform useful tasks for people or equipment. Those categories distinguish common uses; neither definition says that a robot must use AI.

How many robots are in use today?
Industrial robots are deployed at substantial scale, but the figures below count industrial robots generally—not AI-equipped machines. IFR’s 2025 reporting says 542,000 industrial robots were installed worldwide in 2024, more than twice the number installed ten years earlier. The global operational stock reached 4,664,000 that year, up 9% year over year. These are distinct measures: installations count additions during the year, while operational stock counts robots in use.

| 2024 measure | Reported figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial robot installations | 542,000 worldwide | Industrial robots installed during 2024 |
| Industrial robots in operational use | 4,664,000 worldwide | Operational stock in 2024; up 9% year over year |
| Share of new industrial deployments | Asia: 74%; Europe: 16%; Americas: 9% | Regional shares reported for 2024; rounded percentages sum to 99% |
IFR also reports a separate service-robot market: almost 200,000 professional service robots were sold in 2024, a 9% increase, alongside 16,700 medical robots and growth in consumer service robots. These service-robot figures should not be added to industrial installation totals as though they measured the same category. The figures establish the scale of robotics, not AI’s share, relative productivity, or which designs will dominate. See IFR’s robotics reporting.
What could AI change in practical robotics?
AI research could help robots cope with more variation than tightly specified tasks allow today. In a factory, a system that interprets parts or changing conditions more effectively could be useful; outside structured settings, better perception and movement could help machines operate amid more dynamic surroundings. These are engineering goals, not evidence that current robots can adapt to arbitrary tasks like people.

Perception and task flexibility
A robot must interpret its surroundings well enough to perform a task correctly and safely. NIST identifies perception and dexterous manipulation as areas for measurement and improvement: handling a wider range of parts or tasks depends on both what a system can recognize and what its physical tools can do.

As robots share spaces or workflows with people and other machines, interaction becomes a performance and safety concern. A system must behave predictably in its operating environment; AI alone does not establish that its behavior is safe.

Mobility, reliability, and maintenance
Mobile robots, mobile manipulators, and wearable robots face dynamic or unstructured environments. NIST also points to in-situ health monitoring as a way to address robot reliability and the risks and costs associated with failures. These capabilities must work in real operating conditions, not just in a demonstration.
Why the gap between AI research and deployment matters
NIST says a large gap remains between embodied AI demonstrated in academic research and what manufacturers and robotic-system integrators can feasibly implement. Manufacturers need systems that make economic sense, perform productively, and can be used safely—not just systems that appear capable in a controlled example. NIST’s Physical AI and Data Generation for Robotics project focuses on practical approaches and performance assessment.

That assessment matters because a robot’s behavior depends on the combined system: learned models, sensors, mechanical design, controls, task setup, and environment. NIST highlights the need to improve and measure areas such as human-robot interaction, agility, validated datasets and models, and monitoring robot health. Its research priorities are not certifications that any particular commercial robot meets those goals.
Which robot form fits which job?
Industrial arms, mobile service robots, and humanoids solve different problems. IFR identifies mobile, stationary, drone, legged, and emerging humanoid forms as having different advantages by application; no single shape is the inevitable future of robotics. A useful choice starts with the work and environment, not with the most human-like design.

| Robot form | Potential fit | Questions to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Stationary industrial arm | Tasks suited to a fixed workstation and a manipulator | Can it handle the required parts and motions? What safety measures and integration are needed? |
| Mobile service robot | Tasks that require movement between locations | Can it navigate the environment reliably and interact safely with people or equipment? |
| Humanoid robot | Tasks where human-shaped movement or access to human-oriented tools and spaces may be useful | Does the form offer enough practical benefit to justify its safety, training, maintenance, programming, and cost demands? |
For any form, compare task fit and environment, mobility and manipulation needs, safety and reliability, integration and maintenance burden, and economic viability at the intended scale. The reviewed evidence does not establish that humanoids are universally superior.
Are humanoid robots likely to become everyday helpers?
Humanoids attract attention because many workplaces, homes, and tools are designed around human movement. That potential fit does not by itself make a humanoid the best or most economical robot for a task. IFR identifies unresolved challenges involving safety standards, training, maintenance, business cases, programming, manipulation, and scaling. Its 2025 discussion says whether mass adoption will occur—and when—remains uncertain, and does not expect humanoids to replace robot types already on the market. For now, broad everyday adoption should be treated as uncertain rather than inevitable. Read IFR’s 2025 discussion of humanoid robots.
What to watch as intelligent machines develop
The most meaningful progress will be practical: systems that handle real task variation, work safely around people, remain reliable, and justify the cost of integration and upkeep. Better AI may help robots become more useful across selected settings, but adoption depends on validated performance and a sound business case. The future of intelligent machines is therefore likely to be diverse—specialized robots alongside new forms—rather than one universal machine.
