Security teams should strengthen identity, email, vulnerability and incident-response controls while adding safeguards for any AI systems they deploy. The available sources do not establish a comparable rate or success statistic for AI-enabled versus traditional attacks.
How AI-powered attacks differ from traditional attacks
“AI-powered” describes a capability that can be added to an attack, not a wholly separate category. Attackers have long used automation for scanning, credential abuse and mass phishing. AI may make some tasks faster or easier to scale, help personalize messages, generate or alter media, and support coordination across attack stages. Those possibilities do not mean every attack uses AI, or that AI alone explains a particular incident.

| Area | Traditional attacks | What AI may change |
|---|---|---|
| Scale and speed | Attackers already automate scanning, credential abuse and mass phishing. | AI may amplify the speed and scale of activity; the cited guidance does not quantify a universal increase. |
| Social engineering | Phishing and impersonation are established techniques. | Generated text, images, audio or video may make messages more convincing or easier to tailor to a target. |
| Malware and evasion | Malware and attempts to evade detection predate generative AI. | NIST describes AI-generated or obfuscated malware as a risk, but this does not establish that such malware is routinely autonomous or undetectable. |
| Attack coordination | Human operators and conventional automation can coordinate attack stages. | NIST’s December 2025 initial preliminary draft describes agents that could use tools across reconnaissance, exploitation, credential harvesting, lateral movement and data collection. This is a described capability, not evidence of its prevalence in real incidents. |
| AI-system attack surface | Conventional systems face familiar software and data-security risks. | AI deployments introduce risks including prompt injection and data poisoning, and require protection for data, model assets and availability. |
| Defensive operations | Security teams use detection, response and recovery processes. | AI may augment analysts and improve detection and response, but organizations need to evaluate its maturity and fit rather than assume it can replace accountable human decisions. |
NIST’s Generative AI Profile identifies two connected concerns: AI may lower barriers to offensive capability, and AI systems themselves create an attack surface. Its separate Cybersecurity AI Profile is an initial preliminary draft dated December 2025, not a finalized standard or a measurement of incident frequency. NIST’s terminology and taxonomy for adversarial machine learning also covers attacks on AI and machine-learning systems, including evasion, poisoning, privacy and misuse; it is not a comparison of all cyber incidents.

1. Prioritize phishing-resistant authentication
Use phishing-resistant multifactor authentication (MFA) for accounts and services where it is supported, with particular attention to privileged users. CISA identifies FIDO hardware tokens and physical security keys as options. Before deployment, confirm identity-provider compatibility, enrollment coverage, fallback methods and account-recovery procedures. A key helps protect an authentication path; it does not stop malware, exploitation or every route to social engineering. CISA’s small- and medium-sized-business guidance gives a physical security key, including YubiKey as an example, but no one model is suitable for every organization.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
2. Verify unusual requests outside the message
Do not treat polished writing, familiar-looking imagery or a convincing voice or video as proof of identity. Update staff exercises and reporting procedures to include impersonated audio and video as well as targeted messages. Confirm unexpected requests involving payments, credentials or access through a known, independent channel—for example, a contact method already on file rather than one supplied in the request.
3. Maintain email and access controls
Review email authentication and protection, and limit users and services to the access they need. CISA’s AI-election guidance recommends MFA, endpoint detection and response (EDR), and email-authentication protocols such as DMARC, SPF and DKIM. That guidance is election-specific; these are relevant practices to consider, not a universal checklist established for every organization by that document.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
4. Keep asset and vulnerability management central
Know which systems are exposed, patch known weaknesses, restrict unnecessary internet exposure and monitor for suspicious activity. AI does not remove the need for these fundamentals: conventional campaigns also use vulnerable systems and exposed services as attack paths. Apply established asset and vulnerability-management practices alongside any AI-specific controls.
5. Inventory and protect AI systems
For AI systems your organization develops or deploys, record the data inputs, model or service dependencies, integrations, permissions and users. Apply access controls and protect sensitive data, model-related assets and service availability. Assess prompt injection, data poisoning and indirect-input risks where they apply to the system’s design and use; include relevant AI integrations in monitoring and incident planning.

6. Evaluate defensive AI and keep human oversight
NIST says AI may augment analysts and improve detection and response, while emphasizing that organizations need to keep evaluating whether capabilities are mature enough for their needs. Measure operational effectiveness in your environment and retain human review appropriate to the consequences of a decision. Do not assume an AI tool provides autonomous defense simply because it can analyze or generate content.
7. Keep incident response usable under pressure
Maintain clear response roles, escalation paths, evidence-preservation practices and recovery procedures. For incidents involving manipulated media, consider how to preserve and assess the material; for compromised AI integrations, include the relevant data flows, permissions and service dependencies in response planning. AI-themed incidents still require ordinary incident-response discipline.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
The cited sources describe capabilities and risks, not a like-for-like count of attacks. They do not establish a named statistic comparing the prevalence, volume or success rate of AI-enabled and traditional cyberattacks, nor do they prove AI was used in any particular incident. Treat AI involvement in a specific event as an attribution question requiring evidence, rather than inferring it from a convincing message or the general availability of AI tools.
