Vendor reports and surveys describe both pressures; they do not show that every attack is more capable because of AI, or that consolidating tools alone prevents breaches.
How attackers are using AI
Threat reporting describes AI as an aid to particular tasks, not as a universal explanation for cyberattacks. Microsoft’s 2024 Microsoft Digital Defense Report discusses AI-enabled spear phishing, résumé swarming and deepfakes. These are examples in Microsoft’s report, not an independent estimate of how common such tactics are.

CrowdStrike’s 2025 Threat Hunting Report, published August 4, 2025, describes actors using generative AI (GenAI) for phishing lures, malware development and other tasks. CrowdStrike also describes adversary activity spanning endpoint, identity, cloud and unmanaged systems. Those are CrowdStrike’s threat-intelligence observations; the report does not establish that every attacker uses AI or quantify the share of attacks materially improved by it.

A security operations center (SOC) investigates alerts and coordinates responses. A fragmented SOC is one in which relevant signals, investigation context or response actions are dispersed across tools and workflows, leaving analysts to switch between consoles or move data manually. The issue is not the number of products by itself: separate tools can still work together. The practical question is how much context an analyst must assemble by hand.

A cross-domain intrusion may leave evidence in endpoint, identity and cloud systems, as well as on unmanaged assets. CrowdStrike describes that kind of cross-domain activity. It is a reasonable operational inference that disconnected telemetry can make the investigation harder to assemble; the cited sources do not establish fragmentation as the cause of a specific breach.
What the surveys say about analyst workload
A Microsoft-commissioned Omdia survey of 300 security professionals at organizations with more than 750 employees in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand was conducted June 25–July 23, 2025. In the findings Microsoft published February 17, 2026, respondents said analysts pivoted across an average of 10.9 consoles. The study also found that 66% of SOCs lost at least 20% of their week to aggregation and correlation, respondents estimated 46% of alerts were false positives, and 42% went uninvestigated. These are findings from that sponsored survey and sample, not universal rates for all security teams.
Cisco and Splunk’s State of Security 2025, released May 20, 2025, surveyed 2,058 security leaders in nine countries with Oxford Economics; fieldwork took place in October–December 2024. In that survey, 78% of respondents said their security tools were dispersed and disconnected, and 46% said they spent more time maintaining tools than defending the organization. The results describe respondents’ answers, not a controlled comparison showing that disconnected tools caused a particular incident.

Why connecting signals matters—and what it cannot prove
Taken together, the threat reporting and survey findings point to an operational mismatch: attacker activity can cross control areas, while an investigation may require analysts to reconcile evidence across multiple consoles. Better-connected telemetry and workflows can make relevant context easier to bring together and reduce repetitive handling. That is a practical rationale for integration, not evidence that a unified platform by itself reduces breaches.
The surveys also describe alert volume and prioritization problems, not just console switching. Connecting data without improving how alerts are correlated, prioritized and reviewed may simply move noise into a different interface. Nor do the cited studies offer a neutral, head-to-head comparison of security platforms, so they cannot support a product ranking.

How to connect tools without removing human oversight
Use the operational problem—not a promise of consolidation—as the starting point. A useful evaluation asks whether the workflow improves investigation across relevant systems and reduces avoidable manual work while keeping evidence visible to analysts.
- Map the evidence needed for investigations. Identify which endpoint, identity, cloud and unmanaged-asset signals matter to your incidents, and where each signal currently lives. Include the response actions analysts need to take, not only alert feeds.
- Measure the handoffs that create friction. Count the consoles involved in representative investigations and note where analysts export, copy or reconcile information manually. Track aggregation effort and alert disposition so you can distinguish tool-switching from problems with signal quality or staffing.
- Connect relevant telemetry and workflows. Prioritize integrations that let analysts inspect related evidence in context and coordinate response across the systems involved. Keep data ownership and integration maintenance in the design; connections that are unreliable or stale can add operational burden rather than remove it.
- Automate repetitive handling selectively. Use automation for well-defined, repeatable tasks such as gathering context or routing alerts when the rules and expected outcomes are clear. Review whether it actually reduces repetitive work and whether analysts can see what the automation did.
- Keep people responsible for consequential decisions. Preserve analyst review for decisions with significant operational impact, and make supporting evidence and reasoning available for inspection. Cisco/Splunk CISO Michael Fanning said in the May 20, 2025 release: “Human oversight remains central to effective cybersecurity, and AI is used to enhance human capabilities to help where it truly matters: defending the organization.”
- Reassess the whole operating burden. Check whether integrations remain useful as systems change, and account for data management, maintenance and the skills needed to operate them. A connected workflow should reduce friction without making its upkeep invisible.
What the GenAI platform preference finding does—and does not—say
CrowdStrike’s December 17, 2024 announcement of its 2024 State of AI in Cybersecurity Survey reported that 80% of respondents preferred platform-based GenAI over point products and applications. That is a vendor-survey finding, not a universal buyer preference or proof that platform-based tools produce better security outcomes. CrowdStrike CTO Elia Zaitsev said the potential depends on “seamless integration across systems and data, optimizing analyst productivity and accelerating threat detection and response.” The operational case still turns on whether an implementation connects the signals a team needs, produces useful prioritization and preserves meaningful human review.
