To check a Brazilian company’s CNPJ, use the federal government’s Consultar CNPJ service. It directs you to official routes for viewing registration information and status, obtaining a registration certificate, validating a certificate, and checking Simples Nacional opt-in status. The public service is free, web-based, available to anyone, and listed as immediate; it does not by itself establish a company’s reliability, solvency, licenses, or current trading activity.
Choose the official CNPJ check for your purpose
These government routes answer different questions. Use the one that matches what you need rather than treating a certificate, a basic lookup, and a tax-regime check as interchangeable.

How to consult a CNPJ

Open the federal Consultar CNPJ page.

Choose the listed web channel for your task: use the REDESIM consultation route to look up registration details, or the certificate route if you need formal proof.

For the Receita Federal certificate route, enter the CNPJ number and select “Consultar.” The service states that certificate issuance follows Instrução Normativa RFB nº 2.119, dated December 6, 2022.

What the lookup can—and cannot—tell you
Registration information and status
The consultation is for legal-entity registration information, including Receita Federal registration status. It can help establish what the official registration record says; it is not a comprehensive business background check.
QSA and personal information
The QSA is the quadro de sócios e administradores: information about a company’s associates and administrators. The service’s privacy disclosure refers to processing partner or representative names and CPF. Do not assume the lookup exposes every personal detail about those people.
Limits of a CNPJ check
A registration lookup alone does not demonstrate financial health, trustworthiness, a particular municipality’s licenses, absence of legal disputes, or whether the company is currently trading. Those questions require separate evidence relevant to the transaction or activity you are assessing.
Public consultation is not business-account management
The government lists public CNPJ consultation separately from “Meu CNPJ,” which is oriented toward representatives and business changes. You do not need to treat the public lookup as an account-based management task; follow the selected service’s own instructions if you need to register or update a business instead.

These are attributes stated by the service, not a guarantee of processing performance in every circumstance. That page was last modified July 29, 2026. The Receita Federal certificate page cites Instrução Normativa RFB nº 2.119, de 06 de dezembro de 2022, as the basis for issuance.
