Evaluate AI NetOps software by what it can demonstrate on your network—not by labels such as “autonomous” or “AI-powered.” A capable platform should translate an operator’s desired outcome into coordinated actions, verify that the outcome is achieved and maintained, and keep every action within permissions and recovery controls you can inspect.
Use the checks below to assess intent handling, service assurance, telemetry, security, and operational fit. The cited IETF documents describe architectures and use cases; they do not rank vendors or prove a product’s compatibility or performance.

1. Can it translate operational intent into a clear plan?
Operators should be able to express the outcome they want at an appropriate service or network level, rather than having to specify every low-level device command. The platform should help clarify ambiguous intent, show how it interpreted the request, and identify the network elements and changes involved.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Ask for a live walkthrough that starts with an operator’s request and ends with a proposed plan. Check whether the plan explains what will change, where, and why; whether it coordinates changes across relevant elements; and whether an operator can review it before execution. The IETF’s RFC 9315, Intent-Based Networking – Concepts and Definitions, describes intent fulfillment as ingestion, translation, and orchestration focused on the desired outcome.

What to test
- Give the system an outcome that is meaningful to your operations team, then see whether it asks useful questions when the request is underspecified.
- Check whether the proposed plan exposes affected services and devices, dependencies, and intended changes in terms your operators can review.
- Confirm that the system distinguishes a proposed action from an executed one and records what was approved and applied.
2. Does it continuously assure the intended outcome?
Intent fulfillment and intent assurance are different jobs. Applying a configuration does not establish that the service works, nor that it will keep working. The platform should compare observed behavior with the intended outcome over time, identify drift, and explain whether a deviation is expected or harmful.
Ask how assurance works after a change: what it observes, how often it updates its assessment, what qualifies as drift, and whether it recommends a correction or can act under configured authority. RFC 9315 treats assurance as ongoing rather than a set-and-forget step. For the system’s complete loop, check whether it can verify the effect of an action and detect later changes that make the outcome untrue.
Ask the platform questions in both directions
Service assurance should help operators move from a service symptom to a likely network cause, and from a degrading component to the services it could affect. RFC 9417 gives operator-style examples: “Why does my layer 3 virtual private network (L3VPN) fail to connect?” and “Which services are impacted when this specific optic decibel milliwatt (dBm) begins to degrade?” It also asks, “Is that issue actually impacting any other customers?”

Use scenarios relevant to your own services to see whether the product can connect symptoms, components, and affected services, and explain the basis for its assessment. Do not assume that an answer is useful merely because it includes a health score.
3. Does telemetry support service-level understanding?
Device data is useful only if the platform can relate it to operational questions. Ask which operational and configuration metrics it collects, from which sources, and whether collection is streamed or polled. Then check how it maps components to services, identifies symptoms, and explains a service-health assessment.
RFC 9417, Service Assurance for Intent-Based Networking Architecture, describes an assurance graph derived from service configuration or models, metric collection through telemetry or polling, service-health computation, and feedback to the orchestrator. It says a health status combines a score with symptoms, but leaves the score’s precise semantics out of scope. Ask each vendor to define its score and symptoms; do not treat scores from different products as comparable without validating how they are derived.

“Model-driven telemetry greatly facilitates the notion of closed-loop automation, whereby events and updated operational states streamed from the network drive remediation change back into the network.”

Check the data behind the explanation
- Ask which devices, services, configuration models, and telemetry sources are supported in your environment, and how the vendor verifies that coverage.
- Find out how fresh the data is, what happens when a source is delayed or unavailable, and whether the platform shows when an assessment is based on incomplete information.
- Trace a symptom back to its supporting observations and service relationships. Check whether operators can inspect the explanation rather than receiving only a score or recommendation.
4. Are automated actions bounded, authorized, and recoverable?
Safe automation needs more than a human-approval switch. Establish what the system is allowed to change, which identity performs each action, how permissions are authorized, how proposed intent and action parameters are validated, and what supervision and change records are available. Test the failure path as deliberately as the normal one.
RFC 9315 discusses authenticated and authorized intent operations, detection of abnormal behavior, limiting error amplification, and rollback or fallback to a prior safe state. A more recent IETF Internet-Draft proposes governance concepts including bounded autonomy, transparency, action validation, and explicit reversibility metadata. That document is a proposal, not a settled standard; treat it as a prompt for questions, not proof of a required product feature.

Run failure scenarios
- Ask the system to propose an action outside a safe range. Verify whether it blocks the action, requests review, or handles it in another clearly defined way.
- Introduce misleading or incomplete input and see whether the system surfaces uncertainty before acting.
- Simulate a change that worsens service. Observe how the platform detects the effect, alerts or involves an operator, and restores or falls back to a known safe state.
- Review the action record: it should let your team determine what was proposed, authorized, executed, and observed afterward.
- Check whether autonomy and approval can be configured for the relevant action or context, rather than being an all-or-nothing setting.
5. Does the permission model follow least privilege?
Determine which components can write to network devices and exactly what each credential can change. A service-assurance function may need to read operational state and configure telemetry without having broad device-write authority.
RFC 9417 says service-assurance agents do not need device write access apart from configuring telemetry, and recommends limiting credentials to the relevant telemetry-configuration nodes. Use that as a design question, not an assumption about a product: ask the vendor to map its actual components, credentials, and permissions, then verify that the scope matches the functions each component performs.

The IETF’s March 2025 AINetOps: Artificial Intelligence for Operations presentation is a conceptual overview of AI, machine-learning, generative-AI, and rule-based methods applied to network operations. It depicts historical and real-time streaming data feeding insight, decisions, and automation, with assurance, optimization, and automation as benefit areas. It does not establish measured product results.
An August 2026 IETF Internet-Draft, Artificial Intelligence for Network Operations (AINetOps) Use Cases, surveys use cases including reactive troubleshooting, proactive assurance such as anomaly detection and predictive maintenance, closed-loop optimization, and misconfiguration detection. It also references LLM-assisted network management with a human in the loop. As draft work, its contents may change.

What the available standards can—and cannot—tell you
RFC 9315 and RFC 9417 provide architecture concepts for intent fulfillment, assurance, telemetry, service health, security, and feedback into orchestration. The IETF presentations and Internet-Draft describe operational methods and use cases. These sources do not provide vendor rankings, current prices, independent performance comparisons, or measured benefits such as incident-time or return-on-investment improvements. Treat those as claims to validate with evidence from your own environment rather than as outcomes implied by the architecture.
