Choose ChatGPT when you need a conversational explanation, Wolfram|Alpha when you need a computed numerical or symbolic result, and Lean when you need a machine-checked formal proof. Those outputs have different purposes, so a single accuracy ranking would be misleading.
Which AI is best for solving math problems?
The right choice depends on what “solving” means in your situation:

| Tool | Best use | What you receive | Verification standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Learning, explanation, brainstorming approaches, and follow-up questions | Natural-language reasoning and, for supported prompts, interactive math or science modules | You inspect the explanation and independently check important results |
| Wolfram|Alpha | Equations, derivatives, integrals, plots, unit conversions, and numerical or symbolic calculations | Computed output generated from a knowledge base and algorithms, with step-by-step features for many math topics | You check how the input was interpreted and review the returned computation |
| Lean 4 | Formal theorem proving and software verification | A proof term accepted or rejected by Lean’s small trusted kernel | The kernel checks that the formal proof follows from the encoded assumptions |
In practice, a student may begin with ChatGPT, confirm a calculation in Wolfram|Alpha, and use Lean only when a formal certificate is worth the effort. This is a workflow choice, not a contest in which one product wins every problem.

What ChatGPT is good at in mathematics
ChatGPT is a conversational system. You can describe a problem in ordinary language, request a particular level of detail, ask for an alternative method, or stop at any line and ask why it is valid. That interaction is its main advantage over query-oriented calculators.

OpenAI documents interactive learning for mathematics and science. Release notes dated March 10, 2026 describe a rollout covering more than 70 math and science topics, with examples such as the Pythagorean theorem, the ideal gas law, circle area, and lens equations. The notes describe availability for logged-in users across consumer and business plans during the rollout; plan and workspace settings can affect access. See the ChatGPT release notes for current status.
ChatGPT can also act as an explanatory layer over a computation. OpenAI’s description of the Wolfram connection says a language model can translate a request into Wolfram Language and incorporate the exact computed result into its response. Availability of connected features depends on the account and workspace configuration, so do not assume every ChatGPT session has that connection. The integration is described at OpenAI’s Wolfram plugin page.
Where ChatGPT needs caution
A fluent explanation is not automatically a proof. The model can make an arithmetic slip, use an unstated assumption, or confidently interpret an ambiguous expression in the wrong way. For consequential work, ask it to show intermediate steps, substitute the result back into the original equation, and verify the result with a calculator, Wolfram|Alpha, or another independent method.
What Wolfram|Alpha actually does
Wolfram|Alpha describes itself as “a computational knowledge engine: it generates output by doing computations from the Wolfram Knowledgebase, instead of searching the web and returning links.” Its official FAQ lists broad mathematical coverage, including algebra, calculus, geometry, number theory, and discrete mathematics.
Enter a mathematical expression or a natural-language query, then inspect the interpreted input and the resulting output. Typical requests include:

For many mathematics queries, step-by-step views are available. “Steps” should not be confused with a conversational tutor: the system presents a structured derivation or calculation, while ChatGPT can adapt its explanation to your follow-up questions.
Wolfram|Alpha’s limits
The FAQ notes that the engine can handle only public or known information and is subject to computation-time limits. A result can also be wrong for your purpose if the parser understood your notation differently from what you intended. Before relying on an answer, check the interpreted variables, domains, units, assumptions, and branches of multivalued functions.

What is Lean, and how is it different from ChatGPT?
Lean 4 is an interactive theorem prover based on dependent type theory. The Lean project’s language reference describes it as “an interactive theorem prover based on dependent type theory, designed for use both in cutting-edge mathematics and in software verification.” Lean is also a programming language, so the same environment can support verified software development.
Lean does not take a casual question and return a polished tutoring response. You state definitions, hypotheses, and a theorem in Lean syntax, then construct a proof. Lean’s minimal kernel checks the resulting proof term. If the term does not type-check, the theorem is not accepted.

This distinction matters: Lean verifies the formal statement you encoded, under the assumptions and libraries you selected. It does not certify that your formalization matches an informal problem unless you made that correspondence correctly.

Lean’s current documentation and learning path
The official reference currently identifies the manual as covering Lean 4.35.0-rc4, a release-candidate version. Lean changes frequently, so version-specific syntax should be checked against the documentation you are using at The Lean Language Reference.
New users can start with the tutorials and materials listed by the project at Learn Lean. Expect more setup than entering a web query: you need Lean, an editor or development environment, appropriate imports, and a mathematical library when your theorem depends on established results.
Is ChatGPT or Wolfram|Alpha better at math?
For a direct calculation, Wolfram|Alpha is usually the more natural first tool because it is built to parse mathematical input and return a computed result. For understanding why a method works, deciding which method to use, or asking a sequence of “what if?” questions, ChatGPT is usually more convenient.
| Situation | Start with | Why | Extra check |
|---|---|---|---|
| You are stuck on a concept or homework method | ChatGPT | It can explain prerequisites, work line by line, and adapt to your questions | Recalculate the final answer independently |
| You need a derivative, integral, equation solution, graph, or conversion | Wolfram|Alpha | Its core workflow is computation and structured output | Inspect the parsed input, assumptions, and units |
| You need a proof that a formal system can check | Lean | The kernel accepts only a valid proof term for the encoded theorem | Review whether the formal statement models the intended claim |
| You need both an answer and an understandable explanation | Wolfram|Alpha plus ChatGPT | One computes; the other interprets and teaches | Compare the exact expression used by both |
Calling one tool “more accurate” without specifying the problem class, version, input, and verification method is not meaningful. A calculator can compute the wrong expression if the input is misread; a language model can explain a false step; a formal proof can be correct for an incorrectly encoded theorem.

How to use each tool effectively
A reliable ChatGPT workflow
- State the complete problem, including units, definitions, permitted methods, and the desired level of detail.
- Ask for a plan before the final calculation if you are learning. Request explicit assumptions and intermediate results.
- Ask the model to check the answer by substitution, estimation, dimensional analysis, or a second method.
- Verify important numerical or symbolic results independently, especially for academic, engineering, financial, or safety-related decisions.
A reliable Wolfram|Alpha workflow
- Enter a precise expression or sentence. Use parentheses and explicit units rather than relying on informal notation.
- Read the interpreted-input line before trusting the result. Correct variable names, domains, ranges, and assumptions if necessary.
- Open available step-by-step output for a derivation, and compare it with the method required by your class or project.
- Check rounding, branch choices, units, and computation limits when the problem is large or numerically sensitive.
A reliable Lean workflow
- Write the informal claim as a precise theorem with explicit types, hypotheses, and definitions.
- Create a Lean file using the version and libraries required by your project.
- Build the proof interactively, using tactics or terms that Lean can elaborate and check.
- Read every error message and keep compiling until the kernel accepts the theorem.
- Review the statement itself: a checked proof is only as relevant as the assumptions and definitions you formalized.
Can Wolfram|Alpha show steps, and can ChatGPT verify them?
Wolfram|Alpha offers step-by-step features for many math topics, but availability varies by query and account tier. The output is generated from its computational system, not from a claim that a human tutor has reviewed every line.
ChatGPT can explain those steps, translate notation, or point out where an assumption enters. It should not be treated as the final verifier merely because it produces a convincing narrative. If a formal guarantee is required, reproduce the claim in Lean or another proof-checking system; if a numerical guarantee is sufficient, independently recompute it and compare exact values before rounding.
Which tool can verify a mathematical proof?
Lean is the option in this comparison designed to verify formal proofs. Its kernel checks proof terms against the type theory and imported definitions. ChatGPT can help discover or explain a proof, and Wolfram|Alpha can supply computations or identities, but neither conversational output nor a calculator result is the same as kernel-checked proof verification.
Formalization has a cost. You must express the theorem in Lean’s language, select compatible libraries, and resolve every type and logical detail. That overhead is justified when reproducibility, a machine-checkable certificate, or verified software matters; it is excessive for a quick percentage calculation.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can the three tools be combined?
Yes, when each tool performs the job it is designed for:
- Use ChatGPT to clarify the question, explain definitions, and suggest a strategy.
- Send the exact expression to Wolfram|Alpha to obtain a computation, graph, or symbolic transformation.
- Return the computed result to ChatGPT for a plain-language explanation, while checking that the expression and units match the original problem.
- Formalize the final claim in Lean only if a machine-checked proof is needed and the statement can be expressed in its foundation and available libraries.
This division of labor reduces, but does not eliminate, errors. At every handoff, compare the original statement, the transformed expression, assumptions, and units.
Access, cost, and setup at a glance
| Tool | Access and cost information established by the official material | Setup burden |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Interactive learning and connected features can depend on plan and workspace settings; the March 10, 2026 release notes describe rollout details | Low for ordinary conversation; feature availability varies |
| Wolfram|Alpha | Free for personal noncommercial use; Pro offers enhanced features and ad-free use; current price is not specified here | Low for web queries; precise notation improves results |
| Lean 4 | Official documentation and learning materials are available online; software and library setup are required | High relative to the other two because claims and proofs must be formalized |
Common failure modes and fixes
- Ambiguous notation: Rewrite the expression with parentheses, explicit multiplication, domains, and units.
- Confident but unsupported ChatGPT reasoning: Request a second derivation and verify the result independently.
- Unexpected Wolfram|Alpha output: Inspect the interpreted input and add assumptions such as real variables or a specified interval.
- Lean rejects an apparently obvious theorem: Check imports, types, namespaces, notation, and whether the hypotheses actually imply the conclusion.
- A formally verified result seems unrelated to the original question: Compare the informal wording with the Lean definitions; the encoding may be too weak, too strong, or simply different.
The practical verdict
Choose ChatGPT for dialogue and teaching, Wolfram|Alpha for computation, and Lean for formal proof checking. Use a combination when the task needs explanation plus calculation, and reserve formalization for claims whose verification justifies the additional work. The official descriptions of these systems establish different functions, not a controlled head-to-head accuracy benchmark, so judge the workflow against the exact problem you need to solve.
