What Use.AI’s survey found
In a release dated August 25, 2026, Use.AI reported results from a survey of 15,428 adults across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, the European Union, Australia, and Latin America. The reported findings describe respondents’ own attitudes and behavior:

- 64% said using AI to investigate a subject made them more confident challenging a professional’s advice.
- 53% said they use AI to check a professional’s explanation before deciding whether to agree.
- 46% said professional credentials alone carry less weight for them than they once did.
The figures concern advice from professionals including doctors, teachers, managers, journalists, and economists. They are self-reported survey results, not measurements of whether respondents’ challenges were correct or their decisions improved. Use.AI survey summary, August 25, 2026.

Confidence to question is not the same as ability to judge
AI can give someone a starting point for questions or a second explanation. But feeling comfortable challenging advice does not demonstrate the knowledge needed to evaluate it. Use.AI’s release says the survey did not measure whether respondents understood a subject more accurately, made better decisions, or became better at assessing professional advice.

That distinction matters when advice depends on an individual’s circumstances, specialist knowledge, or evidence that is difficult to assess from a short AI-generated explanation. The survey does not establish that AI can replace a professional familiar with a person’s situation, nor does it establish that professional advice should go unquestioned.
What “expertise recession” means here
Use.AI uses “expertise recession” to describe what it interprets as a decline in automatic deference to professional authority. The label is not a formal measure of professional skill, a demonstrated fall in expertise, or an independently confirmed social or economic trend. The reported credential finding is specifically about how much weight respondents say credentials alone carry; it does not show that credentials have objectively lost value.

Use.AI co-founder and CEO Ihor Herasymov summarized the distinction this way: “AI has democratised confidence faster than it has democratised knowledge.” He also said, “Someone can use AI to arrive at better questions without becoming qualified to judge the answers.” Use.AI survey summary.
How to read the age comparison
Use.AI reported that 70% of adults aged 18–34 said AI made them more comfortable questioning professional advice, compared with 49% of adults aged 45 and older. This is a reported difference in survey responses, not evidence that younger people are more accurate at evaluating advice. The release does not provide subgroup sample sizes, so the size and reliability of the age gap cannot be assessed independently from the published summary.

What the survey can—and cannot—tell us
The results support a limited conclusion: respondents described using AI to check explanations and feeling more willing to question professionals. They do not establish that AI caused a broad change in trust, that all adults or AI users behave this way, or that the responses represent every country or profession covered.
The reviewed release does not report field dates, sampling frame, recruitment method, weighting, response rate, full questionnaire wording, or subgroup sample sizes. Those omissions limit independent assessment of how well the findings generalize.
