The steps below follow Google Cloud’s documented path for a private Cloud Run service.
This guide does not describe Song Lingo’s internals. The title alone does not reveal its framework, storage design, or login method, and the app was not examined. Read the commands as the general Cloud Run path, not as a tested recipe for this specific app.

What to confirm in Song Lingo before you deploy
Cloud Run runs a container, so the first decision is how your copy of Song Lingo becomes an image. Check these points in the project itself:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Runtime and build method. If the project already includes a Dockerfile or a published container image, you can deploy that image. If it does not, you will need to build one first.
- Built output. Confirm that the build produces a container image that listens for HTTP requests on the port Cloud Run provides to the container.
- Built-in login. If the app has its own sign-in, you can layer it over Cloud Run’s access control. If it has none, Cloud Run’s authentication becomes the only gate between the internet and your lyrics.
- Persistent data. If the app saves lyrics, preferences, or accounts, do not rely on the container’s local filesystem. Cloud Run instances are replaced when they scale down or restart, so store that data in an external database or service.
- External services and keys. List every service the app calls and every credential it needs. Each credential belongs in Secret Manager, covered below.
Step 1: Deploy the container image
-
Install the Google Cloud CLI, sign in, and select the project that will host the service:
#1 Best Overall
gcloud auth login gcloud config set project PROJECT_ID -
Deploy the image. Adding
--no-allow-unauthenticatedsets the service to require authentication from the start, so it is never briefly public:gcloud run deploy SERVICE --image IMAGE_URL --region REGION --no-allow-unauthenticated -
Expect the first deployment to create a revision. If you pass an image tag, Cloud Run resolves that tag to a digest for the revision, so the revision is tied to the exact image that was deployed. A successful deployment displays the service URL.

Step 2: Keep the service private
Google’s Cloud Run deployment guide offers two access settings. The table shows how they differ for a site meant for one owner.
Recommended Free Tools
| Setting | Who can send requests to the URL | Suitable for a personal lyrics site? |
|---|---|---|
| Allow public access | Anyone on the internet | No |
| Require authentication | Only identities that have been granted permission to invoke the service | Yes |
Once the service requires authentication, grant your own Google account permission to call it:

- Includes tips, prompts, and words of wisdom from songwriting masters to inspire your muse.
- Mix of lined pages (lyrics), staffed pages (music), and fret diagrams.
- Room to write 72 songs.
- Acid-free, archival-quality 120 gsm paper takes pen or pencil beautifully.
- Sturdy hardcover binding protects your work.
gcloud run services add-iam-policy-binding SERVICE --region=REGION --member="user:YOUR_EMAIL" --role="roles/run.invoker"
Google’s HTTPS guidance also describes application-level authentication and authorization as an option. The two approaches differ in where access is enforced:
| Approach | Where access is enforced | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Run authentication (IAM) | At Google’s front end, before a request reaches the app | Each visitor needs a Google identity that you grant access to |
| App-level login | Inside Song Lingo’s code | Works only if the app already has a login feature, and its strength depends on that code |
| Both together | At Google’s front end and inside the app | Two layers to configure and maintain |
For a single owner, Cloud Run authentication alone is the simpler choice. Add app-level login only if the app already provides it and you have reviewed how it works.

Test that the site is actually private
Do not assume the setting worked. Run the Cloud Run proxy, which sends authenticated requests from your machine to the private service:
gcloud run services proxy SERVICE --region=REGION
The command prints a local address, by default http://localhost:8080. Opening that address in your browser should show the app. Then open the service URL from Step 1 in a private browsing window that is not signed in. The request should be refused, typically with a 403 response.

Step 3: Handle sensitive configuration with Secret Manager
Google recommends Secret Manager for sensitive values such as API keys, passwords, and certificates. Do not put them in source code, in the image, or in plain environment settings.
Create the secret
gcloud secrets create SECRET_NAME --replication-policy=automatic
gcloud secrets versions add SECRET_NAME --data-file=FILE_PATH
Use a file for the value rather than typing it on the command line, so the secret does not end up in your shell history. Then grant the service’s runtime service account the Secret Manager Secret Accessor role (roles/secretmanager.secretAccessor) on that secret.
Attach the secret to the service
Cloud Run can expose a secret in two ways. Choose by how the app reads its configuration:
| Method | Flag pattern | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Environment variable | --set-secrets=ENV_NAME=SECRET_NAME:VERSION |
The value is resolved when an instance starts. Running instances keep the old value until they restart, so redeploy or update the service after rotating a secret. |
| Mounted file | --set-secrets=/secrets/NAME=SECRET_NAME:VERSION |
The secret appears as a file at the path you specify. Your app must read the file itself. |
Pin a specific version number, such as :2, rather than latest. A pinned version makes it clear which value a revision uses and prevents an unreviewed new secret version from reaching the app automatically.
Quick Recap
gcloud run services update SERVICE --region=REGION --set-secrets=API_KEY=SECRET_NAME:2
Common problems and fixes
- The URL opens without signing in. The service still allows public access. Inspect its policy with
gcloud run services get-iam-policy SERVICE --region=REGION, and remove any binding forallUsers. - The app starts but cannot read a secret. The runtime service account lacks the Secret Manager Secret Accessor role on that secret, or the secret name or version is wrong.
- A rotated key has no effect. Running instances keep the value they loaded at startup. Create a new revision so new instances read the updated version.
- Saved lyrics or settings disappear after a restart. The app is writing to the container’s local filesystem. Move that data to an external database or storage service.
