The Vatican and Southern Baptist leaders are not arguing that Christians must reject artificial intelligence. Both frame its use around human dignity and discernment, but they address different questions: a 2025 Vatican note examines AI’s limits in relation to human intelligence, relationships and communion with God, while Southern Baptist statements focus on Christian engagement and ministry practice. Neither set of documents establishes one policy for every clergy member or congregation.
What does the Vatican say AI cannot replace?
In Antiqua et nova, dated 28 January 2025, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Dicastery for Culture and Education consider how artificial intelligence differs from human intelligence. The note addresses AI across social settings—including education, work, health, relationships, privacy and warfare—and asks what those differences mean for human dignity and the search for meaning.

Its position is not a blanket rejection of technology. AI is a human-made instrument, and its outputs should not be mistaken for human intelligence or moral judgment. The note says the Church’s moral and social teaching can help ensure AI is used in a way that “preserves human agency.” It also warns against treating AI as a substitute for authentic human relationships or for the fulfillment sought in communion with God.
That distinction matters for spiritual questions. A system may generate a fluent response to a prayer, theological question or personal crisis; fluency alone does not make that response human understanding, pastoral care or a relationship with God. The note’s concern is not a demonstrated claim about whether AI can have religious experience. It is a warning about what people risk confusing with human and spiritual realities.

How have Southern Baptists approached AI?
The 2023 convention resolution
The Southern Baptist Convention adopted On Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies at its 2023 annual meeting. The resolution describes AI as a powerful human-created technology, made possible by God-given capacities, that may be used for human flourishing and love of God and neighbor. It calls for Christian discernment and engagement grounded in eschatological hope—not uncritical embrace or fearful rejection.
This is a resolution adopted by Convention messengers, not a detailed rulebook for every Southern Baptist church. Its theological frame invites Christians to engage with the technology while judging its uses against their beliefs and responsibilities.

The 2026 ministry statement
In 2026, Baptist Press reported that a Lifeway-convened group of Southern Baptist pastors, professors and entity representatives developed the Brentwood Statement on AI and Christian Ministry. It offers ministry guidance organized around wisdom, God-given dignity, truth, integrity, privacy, the Kingdom of God and faithful leadership.

Baptist Press also reported that the committee handling proposed resolutions for the 2026 SBC Annual Meeting considered an AI proposal but did not recommend it for adoption, encouraging churches to address the subject locally. That account reflects continuing discussion, rather than a comprehensive denominational position.

Where do the two traditions agree—and where do they differ?

The overlap is a call for human judgment rather than automatic trust in a tool. The difference is emphasis: the Vatican text develops a theological and anthropological account of what AI is not, while Southern Baptist materials connect discernment to Christian engagement and practical ministry.
Can AI replace a pastor or write a sermon?
These documents do not establish a blanket ban on using AI to assist with sermon preparation, nor do they endorse letting a system take a pastor’s place. The Vatican note’s distinction between generated output and human intelligence, moral judgment and authentic relationship makes replacement a poor fit with its stated concerns. The Baptist materials likewise place technology within Christian discernment, ministry responsibility and faithful leadership; they do not say that a generated sermon is equivalent to pastoral teaching.

For a church deciding how to use AI, the practical question is not only whether a tool can produce a draft. Leaders can ask who checks its claims, who takes responsibility for what is taught, whether sensitive pastoral information is protected, and whether the tool supports or displaces human care. Those questions follow the concerns in the cited guidance; they are not a single policy announced for all churches.
What do the reported pastor figures actually show?
A 2026 Baptist Press report said 18 percent of pastors intentionally avoid AI and 20 percent ignore it, discussing those figures alongside the work on the ministry statement. The report available here does not provide the survey’s sample size, instrument, field dates or population details. The figures should therefore be attributed to Baptist Press and not treated as a representative estimate for all U.S. pastors.
They also do not establish how often pastors use AI to write sermons. The official positions and guidance are clearer than the evidence about everyday pulpit practice; claims that AI-written sermons are widespread go beyond what these sources demonstrate.
What is the latest Vatican context?
The Vatican’s official page lists Pope Leo XIV’s Magnifica Humanitas, dated 15 May 2026. The page’s available summary highlights legal frameworks, independent oversight, informed users and political responsibility. Those points signal continuing Vatican attention to AI governance, but the page summary alone is not enough to support a detailed interpretation of the encyclical’s argument.
