A detector result, a platform label—or the absence of one—is not conclusive proof either. The useful question is what kind of AI involvement is being described, who supplied that information, and what the label actually covers.
What counts as AI-generated music?
“AI-generated” can describe substantially different things. A song made from a prompt and generated as a complete recording is not the same as a human-written and performed song with an AI-generated bassline, a synthetic vocal, or AI-created visuals. Ordinary digital recording and editing do not, by themselves, mean generative AI was used.

YouTube’s music-partner metadata illustrates three broad categories: “Fully Gen AI,” “Partly Gen AI,” and “No Gen AI.” Its examples distinguish a prompt-generated song from a human arrangement that includes an AI-generated musical layer, and from human-performed audio paired with AI-generated video visuals. These are platform classifications, not universal definitions of authorship, quality, or legal rights. There is no single boundary in the cited guidance that covers every AI-assisted tool.
- Fully generated audio: a generative system creates the song or recording, such as a prompt-generated track.
- Partial or assisted use: a person creates or performs some parts while AI generates or changes other parts, such as a musical layer, lyrics, or vocals.
- AI visuals: AI contributes to a video or other accompanying artwork, which does not necessarily mean the audio itself was generated by AI.
Can you hear whether a song was made with AI?
Sometimes a sound may prompt questions, but listening alone is not a dependable way to establish how a track was made. In a Deezer-commissioned Ipsos Digital survey, 97% of respondents failed to identify the fully AI-generated music in a blind task with two AI-generated tracks and one human-made track. The survey was fielded October 6–10, 2025, across eight countries among 9,000 adults aged 18–65. That result describes the study’s three-track exercise; it does not show that every listener will fail in every setting.

- Share Audio Port: With a shared audio port, easily connect another pair to share music or videos—no splitters or special cables needed.
The survey also measured attitudes, not detection ability: 80% agreed that fully AI-generated music should be clearly labeled; 73% of music-streaming users wanted to know when a service was recommending it; and 45% of streaming users wanted an option to filter it. These are responses from the survey’s sample, not a measure of every listener’s preference.
What platform labels and credits tell you
Services do not all report the same thing. A track-level disclosure, an automatically detected category, and a badge about an artist’s identity are different signals. Platform features can also change, and partner metadata may not appear identically in every product.

| Service or signal | What it describes | What an absent label or credit means | Other relevant detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deezer | Deezer says it tags detected fully AI-generated music. | The cited description does not establish that an untagged track is necessarily human-made. | Deezer says it automatically excludes tagged AI-generated tracks from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists. These are Deezer’s stated policies. |
| Spotify Song Credits | AI contributions disclosed by artists or distributors, including contributions to vocals, lyrics, or production. | Spotify says disclosure depends on artists and distributors, and not all distributors enable it. No credit does not mean AI was not used. | These credits describe disclosed creative-process contributions, not whether an artist profile represents a real person. |
| Spotify AI Persona badge | Whether an artist profile represents a real person, according to Spotify’s August 2026 announcement. | The badge is not a track-level declaration about how the music was made. | Spotify said the badge would begin appearing for some artist profiles in mid-September 2026; that does not establish that every profile has one. |
| YouTube music-partner metadata | Partner-supplied categories: “Fully Gen AI,” “Partly Gen AI,” or “No Gen AI.” | YouTube says missing partner metadata is treated as unknown unless other signals allow it to make a determination. | The guidance concerns music-partner delivery; it does not guarantee that every listener sees the same metadata in every YouTube product. |
Deezer’s reported upload figures indicate why its labels are a visible part of the discussion, but they are platform-specific. In 2026, Deezer reported about 90,000 fully AI-generated tracks arriving per day, with such tracks exceeding 50% of daily uploads at a peak in June. The company also said it detected and tagged 13.4 million AI-generated tracks on its service in 2025. These figures are Deezer’s own, not global totals.

How to investigate an unfamiliar artist
External context can help you judge whether an act has a traceable history, but it cannot prove how a specific song was made. The Associated Press suggests checking for sustained social-media activity, evidence of concerts or past live performances, and a label or release history.
- Look for accounts with activity over time rather than relying on a newly created profile.
- Check whether there is credible evidence of live performances or other public activity by the act.
- Look for a consistent release history or label information, while remembering that independent artists may release music without a label.
These are clues, not a checklist that an artist must pass. An emerging, private, or virtual act may have little conventional public history without being wholly AI-generated.

Automated detectors can make mistakes. The AP notes that a detector flag is not proof, and a small informal set of examples cannot establish a tool’s overall accuracy. If you use one, describe the result narrowly—for example, “the detector flagged this track”—rather than treating it as a definitive finding. A platform disclosure or the creator’s own account is more useful context when available, though a disclosure still covers only what it says it covers.
What U.S. copyright guidance says about human input
The U.S. Copyright Office’s Part 2 report, released January 29, 2025, says that generative-AI output may qualify for copyright protection when a human author determines sufficient expressive elements. The Office identifies human-authored material perceptible in the output, or creative human arrangement or modification, as relevant examples. Merely entering prompts is not enough under the report’s analysis.

AI assistance does not automatically rule out protection for a larger human-made work. The Office says AI-generated material may be included within a work that otherwise contains sufficient human authorship. This is U.S. guidance on copyrightability of output; it does not decide the status of a particular song in every jurisdiction.
Keep that question separate from whether a model was trained on licensed material, whether a song infringes an existing composition or recording, whether a vocal likeness was authorized, or what a platform’s contracts and metadata rules require. The Copyright Office’s AI overview said a prepublication Part 3 report on generative-AI training was released May 9, 2025, with a final version still forthcoming at the time of that overview. That status does not establish whether a final report has since appeared.
Voice use is also distinct from authorship. In its September 2025 policy announcement, Spotify said vocal impersonation is permitted only when the impersonated artist authorized the use. That statement describes Spotify’s policy; it does not settle the legal rights in any particular recording or likeness.
