Yes: Mac-based creators can generate candidate B-roll from a text prompt or a still image, then bring it into an editing workflow. These tools add another way to source footage; they do not guarantee a usable shot or replace selection, continuity checks, and editing.
How AI-generated B-roll fits a Mac editing workflow
B-roll is supplementary footage used to illustrate, bridge, or add visual interest to a sequence. With generative video, the starting point can be a written description or an image reference. The service creates candidate clips, which you review and then incorporate into your edit.

For Mac users, compatibility is not necessarily a question of rendering the model on the computer. Runway says its Premiere Pro plugin is available for macOS and Windows, requires an internet connection, and processes generations on Runway’s servers. Adobe describes Firefly as integrated with Creative Cloud apps, including Premiere Pro in its February 2025 announcement. These cloud workflows do not establish a particular Mac chip or GPU requirement; check the current app and service requirements for the exact workflow you intend to use.
The practical sequence is simple: identify a visual gap, describe or reference the shot you need, generate a few candidates, and assess whether any of them work in context. The generation and editor handoff are documented features, not evidence of a guaranteed finished shot or measured reduction in editing time.

The details in this table reflect dated vendor documentation and announcements, not a current side-by-side test. Interfaces, model choices, plan eligibility, credit use, and limits can change. In December 2025, Adobe announced that Runway Gen-4.5 was available in Firefly and on Runway at that time, with a workflow for bringing clips into Firefly’s editor and Creative Cloud applications; that dated announcement does not establish availability or plan terms in October 2026.
How to judge whether a generated clip is useful
Choose the right starting point
A prompt-only workflow is useful when you can describe the subject, setting, action, framing, and mood clearly. An image-reference workflow starts from an existing still and asks the model to animate or build from it. Adobe documents both text-to-video and image-to-video. A reference can help anchor the desired visual direction, but it does not by itself establish that the resulting movement or details will match your project.

Direct the frame and movement
Look for controls that correspond to the shot you need: aspect ratio, composition, camera movement, and—where offered—first and last frames. Adobe’s announcements describe several of these controls, but the capabilities are not necessarily identical across every model or interface. Check the selected model’s current controls before planning a shot around a particular setting.

A clip can look plausible on its own and still fail beside the preceding or following shot. Compare subject appearance, lighting, environment, motion direction, and framing across the sequence. Runway’s explainer identifies consistency over longer clips and across multiple shots as an ongoing challenge. Treat continuity as something to inspect in your edit, not as an automatic result of generation.

Account for the editor handoff
Consider where generation happens and how the result reaches your timeline. Runway documents generation inside a Premiere Pro plugin and importing completed results into the project; its server-side processing means an internet connection is needed. Adobe describes Firefly integration with Creative Cloud apps. Before building a workflow around either route, verify the current export, import, and project-compatibility behavior for the software versions you use.
Commercial rights depend on the service and the inputs
Do not treat a platform’s statement about its generated outputs as blanket clearance for everything in a finished video. Rights to source images, footage, music, likenesses, trademarks, and other protected material can raise separate questions. Review the current terms for the exact service, model, and intended use, and make sure you are entitled to use every input you provide.

- Runway: Runway’s usage-rights FAQ says that, between Runway and the user, users retain ownership and rights to uploaded and generated content. It says commercial uses, including monetized YouTube uploads and advertising, are permitted under its terms, and formal attribution is not required. Those statements do not clear third-party material or likenesses included in inputs or outputs; check the applicable terms and permissions.
- Adobe Firefly: Adobe describes Firefly as commercially safe and says its model was trained on material it had permission to use, including licensed Adobe Stock and public-domain material. Adobe also said it did not train on Adobe customer content. These are Adobe’s representations about its own Firefly model, not a general assurance about partner models or other video-generation services.
Adobe’s February 12, 2025 newsroom announcement said wholly AI-generated Firefly Video outputs would include Content Credentials. That is a dated vendor statement about Firefly Video; do not assume the same provenance feature applies to every model available through a creative app. Check what labeling or provenance information is attached to the specific output you plan to publish.
Generation is not the same as a finished edit
Use generated footage as an ingredient. Review each candidate for visual artifacts, unwanted details, movement that conflicts with the edit, and mismatches in style or continuity. Trim it to the needed moment, compare it against surrounding shots, and decide whether the result communicates the intended idea. If it does not, revise the prompt or reference, try another candidate, or use a different source of footage.

Runway’s resource article also describes longer clips, multi-shot consistency, native audio, and fine-grained camera control as areas still in development. That is the provider’s characterization, not a neutral benchmark. The available vendor documentation establishes that generation and editor integration exist; it does not establish that AI B-roll is consistently better, cheaper, faster, or more suitable than stock footage or a camera shoot.
What the available numbers and claims do—and do not—show
Adobe reported more than 18 billion Firefly assets generated globally in its February 12, 2025 announcement. This is Adobe’s self-reported total for Firefly assets at that time: it is not a count of video clips, active creators, or independently assessed results. It therefore says nothing by itself about the quality of generated B-roll.
Adobe executive David Wadhwani described Firefly as “designed for creative professionals looking for unmatched creative control and IP-friendly tools that can be used safely and effectively in both ideation and production.” This is an Adobe executive’s description of Adobe’s product, not independent evidence of safety, control, or production outcomes.
A practical checklist before relying on a clip
- Confirm the selected model supports the kind of prompt or image reference you plan to use.
- Check the available framing, aspect ratio, composition, and motion controls against the shot you need.
- Confirm macOS support, internet requirements, and the way generated footage enters your editor.
- Review current plan access, generation limits, and credit use before estimating how much iteration a project allows.
- Check the applicable commercial terms and your rights to all inputs, including images, audio, and recognizable people or brands.
- Inspect the output in the actual sequence and retain editorial review for artifacts, continuity, and fit.
Adobe’s feature announcements and Runway’s plugin documentation describe real routes to generate and use B-roll on a Mac. Which route fits depends on your editor, desired controls, rights requirements, and tolerance for iteration—not on an established neutral ranking of clip quality or value.
