Treat each recommendation as a hypothesis, then verify it against the live page, rendered output, server behavior where relevant, Search Console, and current Google Search Central guidance before changing anything.
This workflow is useful whether you are diagnosing a single URL or reviewing a site template. It does not assume a particular AI tool or claim personal testing results.

What AI can—and cannot—do in a technical SEO investigation
AI can help turn a symptom and supporting material into a checklist, suggest possible causes, or explain a documented concept in plainer language. Google says generative AI can assist with research and structure, while warning that its output may be inaccurate. Treat its explanations as working notes, not evidence. Google’s guidance on using generative AI content recommends manually checking AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness.

- Useful role: organize known facts, surface questions to investigate, and draft a list of checks.
- Human role: inspect the site, establish what Google can access and process, confirm current guidance, and decide whether a proposed change is appropriate.
Do not treat a plausible explanation as proof of a cause, or an AI-generated fix as a guarantee of crawling, indexing, ranking, or appearance in a search feature.
Start with a bounded question and evidence
Give the assistant a specific symptom, the affected URLs or templates, relevant documentation or observed output, and the question you need answered. Ask it to distinguish observed facts from assumptions and to flag anything that requires live verification. Avoid pasting confidential site or customer data into a third-party service unless you have permission and an appropriate basis to share it.
A useful request is: “Organize these observed symptoms into facts, possible causes, and checks I can perform. Do not present a cause as confirmed unless the evidence supports it.” The wording is a general example, not a claim about a particular author’s tested prompt.
Investigate in the order Google Search processes pages
Google describes Search in three broad stages: crawling, indexing, and serving. A URL being crawled does not establish that it is indexed; an indexed URL is not guaranteed to be served for a particular query. Use the stage model to keep an AI diagnosis from collapsing distinct problems into a generic “SEO issue.” See Google’s in-depth guide to how Search works.

Check whether Googlebot can fetch the URL and whether important content and links are available after rendering. This matters especially when a page depends on JavaScript. Google says it renders pages using a recent version of Chrome, but rendering does not overcome access problems. The developer guide recommends checking crawlable links, making important content textually visible, and keeping sitemaps aligned with pages you want discovered. Use Google’s developer guide and URL Inspection to investigate the actual page rather than relying on an AI description of its source.

2. Is the intended URL indexed, and how are duplicates handled?
Use URL Inspection in Search Console to examine Google’s information about the URL and compare it with the page’s current state. For duplicate or similar pages, check canonical signals and whether Google selected the URL you intended. An indexing status is evidence about indexing, not proof that the page will appear for a particular query.
3. Is the page eligible and relevant to be served?
Only after access and indexing questions are understood should you assess whether the page is useful and relevant for the search in question. Google explicitly says it does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving even when a page follows Search Essentials. Do not report a technical check as a ranking or visibility guarantee.

Verify robots and indexing directives before deployment
robots.txt and noindex serve different purposes. A robots.txt rule controls crawling; it is not a dependable way to keep a URL out of Google’s index. Google must be able to access a page to read its robots meta directive. If the goal is to exclude a page from search while allowing crawling, use an accessible noindex directive and verify that no conflicting rule blocks access. For details, see Google’s robots meta tag and X-Robots-Tag specifications.

For HTML pages, a robots meta directive can be placed in the page. For non-HTML resources such as PDFs, video, or image files, use the HTTP X-Robots-Tag response header. Before release, confirm the directive’s scope, the response or rendered page that actually reaches Google, and whether another directive conflicts with it.
Best Value
Check generated metadata, content, and structured data
Review AI-produced page text and metadata manually, including title elements, meta descriptions, structured data, and image alt text. A fluent answer can still contain false details or describe markup that is not present on the rendered page. Google warns against scaled content generation that produces many pages without additional value for people; the issue is usefulness and quality, not simply whether AI was involved.
For structured data, validate the implementation with Google’s Rich Results Test and check the applicable general and feature-specific rules. Valid markup can make a page eligible for a rich result, but eligibility does not guarantee that Google will show one. Structured data is not a special route into Google’s generative AI features: Google’s guide says those features require no special schema markup. Nor does it recommend adding an llms.txt file, chunking content as a supposed shortcut, or inserting inauthentic mentions to influence those features. See Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features in Search.
Measure observed outcomes, not an AI’s explanation
Record the URL, the check performed, what you observed, and when you observed it. If you change a directive or template, keep the before-and-after evidence so you can distinguish a confirmed implementation change from a later search outcome. Correlation does not establish that the change caused a visibility shift.

Quick Recap
A final verification checklist
- Is the problem stated as an observable symptom, with affected URLs or templates identified?
- Are the assistant’s assumptions separated from facts you have actually checked?
- Have you checked access, rendering, indexing, and canonical handling at the relevant stage?
- Do robots.txt, page-level directives, and response headers match the intended behavior?
- Have you manually checked generated text and metadata, and validated structured data where used?
- Does the proposed change follow current Google documentation and solve the observed problem without creating a conflicting directive?
- Have you recorded the result without turning an AI explanation or a correlation into a causal claim?
