AI for MSPs: Choose a Measured Rollout—or a Deliberate Wait

AI planning does not require an immediate service launch. MSPs can assess customer needs, operational readiness, and safeguards to decide whether to pilot, partner, or wait.

Every managed service provider needs a plan for AI, but that plan does not have to start with a new AI service. Decide what business or customer outcome matters, check whether your people, systems, data, and safeguards can support it, then choose a bounded pilot, a partner, or a defined period of waiting. The evidence shows experimentation and buyer interest—not a universal business case or a timetable that fits every MSP.

Why an AI plan matters even if you do not deploy now

AI is already appearing in MSP operations and service portfolios, while customer interest has not consistently translated into meaningful service revenue. That gap makes planning more useful than either rushing to launch or waiting without a decision point.

MSP GLOBAL’s Spring 2026 State of the Industry summary reports that 55% of respondents use AI internally for work such as ticket routing and reporting, 39% embed AI in existing services, and 36% offer client-facing AI-enabled services. These are findings from the report’s fourth quarterly wave; the summary also says its series covered more than 1,100 MSP professionals across four waves, but does not establish that these percentages use the combined four-wave sample. Kaseya’s April 14, 2026 release reports that 48% of surveyed MSPs ranked AI and automation as clients’ top need for 2026, while 13% said they currently generate meaningful revenue from those services. Kaseya describes its vendor-published State of the MSP survey as including more than 1,000 MSPs worldwide. These are separate survey responses, not proof that demand will become revenue for any particular provider. Kaseya

Buyer-side research adds context, but measures different populations and questions. In KPMG International’s 2026 Managed Services Outlook, 56% of surveyed buyers cite AI management as a top managed-services investment priority over the next two years, and 33% cite cybersecurity. The study, researched with IDC, surveyed 1,224 senior leaders at large organizations across 12 countries. It is not an assessment of MSP readiness. KPMG International

Barracuda Networks’ 2025 global MSP Customer Insight Report says 39% of surveyed organizations expect to need MSP support with AI and machine-learning tools and applications in the next few years. The survey was conducted by independent research company Vanson Bourne; its result is a broad demand signal, not a forecast for every region, vertical, or MSP account base. Barracuda Networks

These figures should not be combined into one adoption or demand rate: they come from different publishers, respondents, and questions. Nor do they establish ROI, a required launch date, or how many MSPs should wait.

Choose the kind of AI move before choosing a tool

Internal enablement, improving an existing service, and selling a new client-facing service are distinct decisions. A pilot that helps staff route tickets does not automatically justify a standalone AI offering. Compare the options against the business problem, customer evidence, delivery burden, and ability to reverse course.

Option What it is for Questions to resolve first
Internal AI use Support an existing workflow, such as ticket routing or reporting. Will it improve a measured service outcome? What data can the tool access, and who reviews its output?
AI embedded in an existing service Improve or extend a service customers already receive. Can you explain the change to customers, maintain the service, and assign responsibility for errors or incidents?
Client-facing AI service Help customers implement, oversee, secure, or use AI-enabled tools. Have customers described a specific problem and willingness to engage? Do you have the expertise and support capacity to deliver it?
Partner-led delivery Address a skills or capacity gap while your MSP retains a defined customer role. Who owns integration, data handling, security responsibilities, service levels, customer relationships, and the exit plan?
Deliberate wait Defer investment until a customer problem, capability, or safeguard is clearer. What evidence will trigger a review, who owns it, and when will the decision be revisited?

No comparable ROI figures establish one option as universally best. Evaluate likely customer value, workflow fit, data quality and sensitivity, integration effort, security and accountability, staffing, ongoing costs, and the consequences of failure or rollback. Treat a new revenue line as a hypothesis until customers and delivery economics support it.

Use a decision sequence that ends with a gate

  1. Name the outcome

State whether the goal is lower service-delivery effort, faster response, better quality, customer risk management, a customer-facing capability, or new revenue. KPMG’s 2026 outlook describes cost and efficiency alongside strategic outcomes and technology innovation; an MSP should make its own intended outcome explicit rather than treating “adopt AI” as the goal.

  2. Separate internal use from an offer

List operational experiments separately from changes to existing services and proposals for new client-facing services. Each has different customer expectations, risk exposure, and evidence requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Validate the customer problem

Ask customers where AI tools are already in use, which workflows and data are involved, and whether they need implementation, oversight, integration, or security support. Barracuda’s reported expectation of future support is a reason to ask—not a substitute for evidence from your own accounts.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
  4. Map operational readiness

Inventory relevant systems and data, integration work, staff skills, ownership, and points where a person must review, correct, or escalate an output. KPMG highlights hybrid environments, integration, and cross-functional data management as relevant to managed AI adoption; these are planning questions, not a guaranteed-success checklist.

  5. Set risk and governance boundaries

Decide what customer data may be used, who approves tools and access, how errors or incidents are handled, and how cybersecurity responsibility is divided between your MSP, any partner, and the customer. KPMG identifies AI management and cybersecurity as prominent buyer investment areas. Its survey does not supply legal advice or a sector-specific compliance checklist.

  6. Choose a bounded pilot or wait

For a pilot, define scope, a baseline, a measurable success criterion, a responsible owner, and a review date before deployment. Set limits on data and permissions, plus a way to stop or roll back if results or safeguards fall short. These are practical decision controls, not thresholds established by the cited surveys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  7. Review partner fit if needed

If you lack a capability, assess a prospective partner’s relevant expertise, integration responsibilities, security practices, data handling, service-level commitments, customer ownership, and exit options. The cited market studies do not validate any particular provider.

Make waiting an active decision

Waiting is reasonable when the customer problem is unvalidated, data access or quality is inadequate, the pilot cannot be safely bounded, ownership is unclear, or you cannot measure whether the effort helps. Record which condition is blocking progress, what evidence would change the decision, who will gather it, and a date to reconsider. The date is a management choice; the available surveys do not prescribe how long an MSP should wait.

Reconsider when a customer problem is specific, the necessary data and systems are accessible, a safe pilot scope is possible, an accountable owner is named, and a meaningful outcome can be measured. If those conditions do not arrive, continuing to wait can remain the decision rather than a failure to keep up.

What the market signals do—and do not—say

KPMG’s 2026 outlook reports that 70% of its respondents use managed services for governance, risk, and compliance either for an entire business function or at scale across the enterprise. This is evidence that managed governance is already relevant to many surveyed buyers; it is not an AI-specific adoption rate. KPMG’s report also describes leading providers as combining AI-enabled cybersecurity with testing and securing clients’ AI systems and using AI to bolster cyber defense. That is the report’s description of a leading-practice approach, not proof that every provider offers it or that it guarantees security. KPMG International

MSP GLOBAL characterizes security as “the expected floor, not the competitive ceiling.” For an MSP considering an AI offer, that is a useful positioning reminder: security may be a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator on its own. Whether you can deliver the safeguards customers need still depends on your own capabilities and responsibilities. MSP GLOBAL
