Neither DoorDash’s text-ordering beta nor its in-app Ask DoorDash assistant has been shown to be faster, more accurate, or cheaper than the other. The choice comes down to which interface fits how you want to order—and whether the feature is available to you. Text ordering keeps the conversation and checkout in a message thread; Ask DoorDash helps you discover and refine restaurant or grocery options inside the DoorDash app.
How the two DoorDash ordering options work

These descriptions are DoorDash’s announced features, not independent tests of how well its suggestions work. DoorDash says both experiences can personalize suggestions using preferences or past orders; that is not a guarantee that a suggested cart will match your needs. What you can ask each assistant to do
Text ordering: request a meal or your usual
DoorDash describes a flow where you send a request by text, such as naming a dish, asking for a nearby recommendation, or requesting a usual order. It says the service searches local spots, proposes a cart, and can complete checkout in the text thread. The company also says it can use order history and preferences, including modifications, and account for group preferences. These are company-stated capabilities, not independently verified accuracy results.
Ask DoorDash: search and refine in the app
Ask DoorDash is designed for natural-language discovery in the app: tell it what you are craving, refine the options, request a cart informed by dietary preferences, budget, group size, or previous orders, then adjust and check out in the app. DoorDash also described creating grocery carts from a recipe link, a cookbook photo, or a grocery-list photo. The June 11 announcement does not specify a full current availability matrix, so check the app in your location rather than assuming the feature is available on every device or account.

Which should you choose?
- Choose text ordering if you prefer a message-thread workflow and have access to the beta. It may be convenient if you want to describe a meal or repeat a usual order without starting in the app; the announced flow still involves reviewing a suggested cart.
- Choose Ask DoorDash if you are already browsing in the DoorDash app and want to explore or refine restaurant or grocery options there.
- Use the ordinary app flow if neither conversational option is available to you or you would rather select items directly. The announcements do not say that either assistant is required to place a DoorDash order.
This is a workflow-based recommendation, not a performance ranking. DoorDash’s announcements do not report a controlled comparison of completion time, order accuracy, customer satisfaction, or fees between text ordering and Ask DoorDash.

There is no evidence in the reviewed launch announcements that text ordering is faster or less expensive than ordering in the app. Nor do they establish that either route changes menu prices, taxes, delivery fees, or promotions. A conversational flow could suit your preferences, but that alone does not prove a faster checkout or a lower bill.

For your own order, check whether the feature is available, review the proposed items and modifications, and compare the final checkout total shown before you place the order. DoorDash’s June 11, 2026 estimate of 800,000 menu items and grocery products available to the average U.S. user was based on eligible delivery inventory across a sample of 10,000 DoorDash consumers as of June 2026; it was a company estimate, not an independent inventory audit or a comparison of these ordering methods. DoorDash’s announcement gives that estimate and its stated basis.
