An AI detector estimates whether eligible writing may have been generated or altered by AI; a plagiarism or similarity checker finds text that matches material in its databases. They answer different questions. Neither score, by itself, proves misconduct—or proves a submission is original.
What is the difference between an AI detector and a plagiarism checker?
| What it compares | What it reports | What the result can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Similarity checker | Submission text against selected sources, such as internet material, academic publications, and student papers | Where wording overlaps with material in the comparison database |
| AI-writing detector | Qualifying prose analyzed by a model | Which eligible text the model estimates may be AI-generated or AI-generated and further modified |
Turnitin says its AI score is independent of its Similarity score. A passage can match a source without being AI-written, and a model can flag prose as potentially AI-written without finding a matching source. Similarity tools rely on the material in their comparison collections; AI detectors make a model-based estimate rather than locating a source for every flagged passage. What does a similarity score actually mean?
A similarity report highlights text that overlaps with items in the checker’s databases. The percentage describes the amount of text identified as matching under that system’s rules; it is not a judgment that the student plagiarized.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A properly cited quotation, a bibliography entry, standard wording, and unattributed copying can all contribute to overlap, but they do not carry the same meaning. Conversely, a low similarity score cannot establish originality: copied work that is not represented in the database, substantially transformed wording, or contract cheating may produce few searchable matches.

Turnitin describes the report’s primary function as highlighting matching content from other sources. Whether a match violates an assignment’s expectations or an academic-integrity policy is a separate decision requiring human interpretation.
What does an AI-detection score mean?
Turnitin describes its AI score as the share of “qualifying text” its model identifies as potentially AI-generated or AI-generated and further modified using a paraphraser or bypass tool. Its current guidance defines qualifying text as prose sentences in long-form writing. The model is not described as reliably assessing poetry, scripts, code, bullet points, tables, or annotated bibliographies.
The score is not a source match and does not identify authorship with certainty. Turnitin warns that the model may misidentify human-written, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased text, and says it should not be the sole basis for adverse action. It also notes increased false-positive incidence in the 0–19% range. The University of Bristol likewise characterizes an AI score as an indicator rather than evidence of AI use.

Turnitin’s guidance, checked October 4, 2026, lists the following requirements and limits. These are Turnitin-specific, not universal requirements for every detector.
- At least 300 words of prose and no more than 30,000 total words.
- A file smaller than 100 MB, in DOCX, PDF, TXT, or RTF format.
- Supported languages: English, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic. Turnitin says only its English detector currently includes AI paraphrasing and bypasser detection.
- For results above 0% and below 20%, the report displays an asterisk instead of a numerical score to reduce misinterpretation risk. Older reports generated before July 8, 2024 may show a numeric score below 20%.
Requirements and product behavior can change; consult the live Turnitin AI Writing Report guide for the current details.
Can either tool prove plagiarism or AI use?
No. A similarity percentage cannot decide whether matching text is plagiarism, and an AI score cannot prove who wrote a passage or whether AI was used. Both are signals that require evidence and context.

Independent evaluations also caution against treating AI-detection performance as a fixed property of every tool. In a 2023 study, Debora Weber-Wulff and colleagues tested 12 publicly available tools and two commercial systems, including Turnitin and PlagiarismCheck. They concluded that the evaluated tools were neither accurate nor reliable, and reported that obfuscation worsened performance. Those findings apply to the systems and study design they tested, not automatically to every current vendor version.

It reported 39.5% accuracy in its baseline evaluation and 17.4% on manipulated content. Those are study-specific results, not an accuracy rate for all AI detectors or current releases. The authors cautioned against using detectors to determine academic-integrity violations, while noting a possible non-punitive role in learning support.

For educators reviewing a flag
- Inspect the specific passages, matched sources, citations, quotations, and paraphrasing—not just the overall percentage.
- For an AI flag, consider whether the assignment and text type fit the detector’s stated scope, along with the student’s process and other available evidence.
- Apply the relevant institutional policy and academic judgment. The University of Bristol recommends holistic review and additional evidence before referral; Turnitin says its AI score should be one data point considered alongside educator knowledge and policy.
A flagged report can prompt a closer look, but it should not substitute for a reasoned assessment of the work.
For students asked about a concern
- Ask which passages raised concern and which policy or assignment rule applies.
- Where available, retain legitimate drafts, notes, source records, and version history that help explain how the work developed.
- Respond to the specific evidence and context rather than treating a percentage as a verdict.
These are practical steps for a contextual discussion, not a guarantee of any particular institutional outcome.
