AI Data Quality: Why More Information Isn’t Enough for Better Decisions

More information does not guarantee better AI decisions. Data must be relevant, reliable, contextualized, interoperable, and governed for its intended use.

More information does not automatically produce better AI decisions. New data helps when it fills a relevant gap; data that is skewed, incomplete, poorly contextualized, or difficult to combine can leave decisions unreliable even as the volume grows. The useful question is not simply how much data a team has, but whether it is fit for the AI task.

Why more information can still leave AI guessing

Information often lives in systems built for different purposes. A field that has one meaning or format in one database may be defined differently elsewhere, and records may lack the context needed to interpret them together. Access to several sources does not give an AI system a shared logic for understanding them.

In a real-estate example, ownership, zoning, environmental, and neighborhood-demographic information may be spread across separate systems. Vince Soriero used this illustration in a TechRadar Pro opinion article published August 24, 2026; it illustrates the interoperability problem rather than establishing a measured industry-wide case study. As UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology guidance puts it: “The quality and suitability of data depend not only on the technology and its intended use, but also on how data is defined, collected, and captured at source.” That makes readiness specific to the intended capability and use—not a permanent property a dataset earns simply by being large.

When adding data helps—and when it does not

Additional examples can help when they contribute relevant coverage, useful features, or labels, or address a documented gap in the data. But collecting more records that repeat an existing skew or preserve the same errors may add volume without fixing the underlying problem.

A 2025 NIST pilot study, using an open-source dataset and classical machine-learning algorithms, found that performance could increase or decrease with data skew; feature-importance methods did not predict the effect of skew; and adding more data might not mitigate skew effects. These are findings from a specific pilot, not proof that additional data never helps. NIST: Data Frequency Coverage Impact on AI Performance.

Data-centric AI and model-centric AI are complementary approaches, not competing choices. A team can refine data it already holds—by correcting errors or improving consistency—or extend a dataset with additional examples, features, or labels. The right choice depends on the diagnosed weakness and the model’s intended task. Data-Centric Artificial Intelligence, Business & Information Systems Engineering.

How to assess whether data is fit for an AI task

Before treating a bigger dataset as progress, assess the dimensions that determine whether it can support the intended decision. UK government guidance emphasizes technical fit, quality, context, interoperability, governance, and legal, security, and ethical controls. Read the UK government guidance.

Data Quality Assessment
  • Used Book in Good Condition
  • Task fit: Does the data represent the decision the system is expected to make, and is its technical structure usable for that capability?
  • Quality and completeness: Are important values accurate and present, or do missing fields and errors undermine the intended use?
  • Representation: Which populations, conditions, or cases are underrepresented, and could the dataset reproduce a skew?
  • Context and metadata: Are definitions, provenance, and relevant circumstances available so records can be interpreted correctly?
  • Consistency and interoperability: Can information from different systems be joined and compared without confusing incompatible fields or definitions?
  • Governance and permitted use: Are access, ownership, security, legal requirements, and ethical constraints addressed for this particular use?

These checks help distinguish two very different remedies: improve the data already available, or collect additional information to fill a demonstrated blind spot. Neither choice removes the need to assess the AI system against its specific task.

What the organizational evidence says

Accenture’s May 26, 2026 report surveyed executives at 2,000 companies across 15 countries and 9 industries. In that survey, 72% said their organizations lacked trusted data of the right quality with standardized governance to support advanced AI. More than 80% of respondents said data-related risks at least occasionally delayed, limited, or altered AI and generative-AI initiatives. These are survey findings about those respondents, not universal estimates for all organizations. Accenture: AI-ready data.

Data problems can also spread beyond a single dataset or model. A 2021 ACM SIGCHI interview study by Sambasivan and colleagues, involving 53 AI practitioners in India, East and West African countries, and the United States, reported a 92% prevalence of data cascades in that study. The figure describes that interview study; it is not a worldwide rate. Read the paper hosted by Google Research.

Choose the data fix that matches the problem

Once a weakness is identified, the response should match it. Correct data that is inaccurate; document definitions and context that are missing; connect sources when incompatible systems prevent useful interpretation; and govern access and use where controls are inadequate. Extend the dataset when evidence points to a real coverage gap.

Then assess the result against the specific AI task. A larger dataset is useful only if it improves the information available for that decision; volume by itself is not evidence of better data or better outcomes.
