AI data-center borrowing could put upward pressure on long-term interest rates, but it does not set them on its own. Dallas Fed researchers describe three possible channels: long-maturity corporate bonds, interest-rate swaps used with floating-rate borrowing, and less issuance from other companies that might otherwise supply duration. The analysis points to a possible influence on the Treasury yield curve—not proof that AI financing caused any particular move in rates.
How does AI debt affect the yield curve?
The yield curve shows interest rates for bonds of different maturities. When investors take on more long-term interest-rate exposure, they generally need to be compensated for it. If AI infrastructure financing adds to the market’s supply of that exposure—called duration—it can, at the margin, push long-term yields higher or make the curve steeper. The effect depends on who borrows, how they finance projects, and what investors are willing to hold.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas’s February 2026 analysis identifies three routes: issuing long-term corporate bonds, using swaps to turn floating-rate borrowing into fixed-rate exposure, and potentially displacing issuance by financial companies that often hedge duration. These channels are related, but they do not affect Treasury yields and swap rates in exactly the same way.

Duration is a measure of how sensitive a bond or other financial position is to interest-rate changes. A long-maturity fixed-rate bond usually carries more duration than a short-term or floating-rate loan. When a borrower issues a long-term fixed-rate bond, investors take on that interest-rate exposure. More duration for investors to absorb can require a higher yield, all else equal.

Three ways AI financing can add duration
1. Long-term corporate bonds
A company that finances data centers with long-maturity, fixed-rate bonds transfers rate exposure to bond investors. The Dallas Fed reported that Wall Street estimates for AI-related investment-grade bond issuance in 2026 were centered on $300 billion. Those estimates could amount to as much as $360 billion in ten-year equivalents—about one-eighth of Treasury duration supply, according to the analysis. These are estimates, not a record of final 2026 issuance.
The comparison is about duration, not a claim that AI companies are issuing Treasury bonds. Corporate debt and Treasury debt have different borrowers and credit risks, even when their interest-rate exposure can be compared using a common duration measure.
2. Swaps paired with floating-rate borrowing
Private-credit and other loans often have floating interest rates. A borrower can use a pay-fixed interest-rate swap alongside such a loan: the borrower pays a fixed rate and receives a floating rate through the swap, helping offset the loan’s floating-rate cost. The combined position can leave the borrower with exposure more like long-term fixed-rate financing. In this way, a swap can create synthetic duration without requiring the borrower to issue a conventional long-term bond.

That figure is an estimate based on anecdotes, not a measured total of AI-related swaps. Swap activity can also affect Treasury-versus-swap pricing differently from direct Treasury issuance.

3. Possible substitution for other issuers
AI companies competing for financing may change which borrowers come to market. The Dallas Fed raises the possibility that AI issuance could crowd out some financial-company issuance. That matters because financial firms have historically issued bonds and hedged interest-rate exposure, adding duration supply of their own. Whether this substitution occurs, and how much it offsets AI-related issuance, is uncertain.
Will AI data-center borrowing push long-term interest rates higher?
It could contribute to upward pressure, but the available analysis does not establish that AI borrowing alone caused yields to rise or will determine where rates go. Treasury yields also respond to factors beyond AI financing, and the Dallas Fed’s analysis infers a possible duration-supply effect from market behavior rather than isolating a clean causal estimate.
The researchers examine how the relationship between the slope of the 10-to-30-year Treasury curve and long-term Treasury asset-swap spreads changes with term-premium measures. In broad terms, the curve’s slope compares yields on longer- and shorter-maturity Treasuries, while an asset-swap spread compares a bond’s yield with swap rates. A divergence between those relationships can help assess whether direct bond issuance and synthetic duration from swaps are affecting markets differently. It is evidence to interpret, not a simple test that proves a single cause.
For readers, the key distinction is between a potential marginal influence and a rate forecast. The estimates indicate that AI financing may be large enough to matter to duration markets. They do not say how much any specific Treasury yield will change, or when.

How large is the AI financing wave?
The International Monetary Fund’s April 2026 Global Financial Stability Report estimated $3.4 trillion in AI-related capital expenditure through 2029. It also reported that hyperscalers had raised more than $100 billion in bond financing since January 2025. The capital-expenditure estimate covers planned investment, while the bond figure describes financing raised; neither is the same as the Dallas Fed’s estimate of 2026 investment-grade issuance.
Those numbers describe substantial investment and borrowing, but they do not mean every data center or AI-related obligation has the same borrower or credit risk. A large hyperscaler borrowing directly in the bond market is different from a project funded through private credit, a structured vehicle, or an off-balance-sheet arrangement.

The rate-market effect of duration is separate from the question of whether a borrower can repay. To assess credit risk, look at the borrower and the financing structure, not just the label “AI debt.”

- Borrower strength and rating: The IMF said in April 2026 that hyperscalers’ earnings growth had kept pace with capital expenditure, and that their average credit quality and demand for their bonds were strong. It described financial-stability risks as contained at that time, while warning that future spending could pressure earnings and cash buffers.
- Type of financing: A corporate bond on a company’s balance sheet differs from private-credit borrowing, structured finance, or an off-balance-sheet obligation. The Bank of England’s July 2026 Financial Stability Report highlighted growing use of these financing forms, alongside concerns about debt-service sustainability, maturity mismatches, and opacity.
- Rate exposure and refinancing: A fixed-rate bond locks in its rate for its term. A floating-rate loan can leave the borrower exposed to changing interest costs unless it hedges that exposure. Maturity dates also matter: large repayments concentrated in a short period can create refinancing pressure.
- Leases, guarantees, and customer commitments: The Bank of England emphasized the importance of lease and guarantee quality in determining the risk debt holders ultimately bear. A project’s financing may rely on cash flows or commitments whose strength and enforceability need to be assessed.
- Connections between companies: The IMF warned that circular intercorporate arrangements can create additional channels for shocks to spread. A financing chain can make the exposures less obvious than a straightforward bond issued by one borrower.
The European Central Bank’s May 2026 Financial Stability Review found that spreads for riskier IT companies had widened more than broad bond spreads, suggesting investors were distinguishing among borrowers. It also said business-debt growth remained low in the United States and euro area. That is a more mixed picture than a generalized debt surge already underway in both economies.

What obsolescence means for data-center debt
The IMF reported an average implied useful life of around seven years for hyperscaler property, plant, and equipment, based on accounting depreciation. That average does not mean every asset lasts seven years: GPUs and advanced chips may become obsolete on shorter horizons. The IMF did not characterize this risk as an imminent financial-stability concern in its April 2026 report.
For lenders and investors, the practical issue is whether the expected cash flows from equipment and facilities can support debt over its full term. If the most important hardware loses value or competitiveness faster than the financing is repaid, the mismatch can matter to a project’s economics even if the borrower is a strong company overall.
What historical risk signals do—and do not—show
The ECB’s May 2026 review reported that, in a historical sample, 15% of years with particularly strong growth in both equity prices and business debt were followed by a financial crisis within two years. This is historical context, not a forecast that AI investment will cause a crisis. It does not show that every period of strong asset-price and debt growth ends in distress.
Read that statistic alongside the ECB’s finding that business-debt growth remained low in the United States and euro area, and the IMF’s assessment that hyperscaler credit quality and bond demand were strong at the time. Together, these observations support monitoring financing structures and borrower resilience—not treating an AI-related spending estimate as evidence of an imminent systemic event.
What to watch in future market data
To judge whether AI financing is becoming more important to long-term rates, distinguish actual issuance and swap activity from projections, and compare them with the broader supply of duration. Also track who is borrowing and how the obligations are structured: aggregate totals alone can obscure differences between a hyperscaler bond and a project-financed data-center debt package.
