The most useful defenses remain strong account protection, prompt patching, careful verification, protected backups and a clear response plan. Organizations that build or operate AI systems also need to secure them throughout their lifecycle.
What has changed about cyber threats—and what has not?
“The AI cyber war just began” is an urgent headline, not a precise description of a new conflict with a known start date. Official assessments describe AI as enhancing existing tactics and supporting more capable social engineering; they do not establish that every attack is AI-generated or that AI alone caused a particular incident.

The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) says threat actors are almost certainly already using AI for tasks including victim reconnaissance, vulnerability research, exploit development, social engineering, basic malware generation and processing exfiltrated data. Canada’s National Cyber Threat Assessment 2025–2026 likewise describes AI tools supporting cybercriminal and state-sponsored workflows, including phishing and social engineering. These assessments point to changes in speed, scale and plausibility—not the disappearance of familiar weaknesses such as stolen credentials, unpatched software or poor recovery planning.

In its April 6, 2026 announcement of the 2025 Internet Crime Report, the FBI reported 1,008,597 complaints and nearly $21 billion in losses from cyber-enabled crime. Those are broad figures, not estimates of AI-caused crime. Phishing and spoofing, extortion, and investment schemes were among the most frequently reported complaint types; the FBI did not say those reports were all AI-related.
The sources do not establish how much AI increases the success rate of attacks, or that AI-generated malware dominates real-world incidents. The practical response is to treat AI as an added capability in attackers’ workflows while strengthening defenses that address the underlying risks.

How can you protect accounts, devices and data?
For individuals and small organizations, these steps address the everyday paths attackers use to gain access, trick people or disrupt operations. This is a practical checklist, not a ranking published by CISA or NCSC.
1. Turn on multifactor authentication for important accounts
Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) first for email, financial services, administrative accounts and remote access. Email deserves priority because access to an inbox can expose password-reset messages for other services.
Where a service supports it, consider a phishing-resistant method such as a hardware security key. It is a physical MFA factor, not a universal solution: check the service’s supported standards, device compatibility, how to enroll a spare key and how account recovery works before relying on one. CISA’s cited material supports MFA generally; it does not endorse or test a specific key.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
2. Patch operating systems, applications and internet-facing services
Install security updates promptly for operating systems, browsers, applications, network equipment and any service exposed to the internet. An organization should assign a clear owner to patching and prioritize known exploited vulnerabilities rather than treating every update as equally urgent. CISA and FBI product-security guidance identifies patching known exploited vulnerabilities as a focus.
3. Use unique, long passwords and a reputable password manager
Give every account its own long password. Reusing a password lets a breach at one service put accounts elsewhere at risk. A reputable password manager can help create and keep track of distinct passwords; protect the manager’s own account with MFA and understand its recovery process.
4. Limit privileges and review access
Give each person, account and service only the permissions needed for its work. Keep routine accounts separate from administrative ones where practical, remove access when roles change or people leave, and periodically review who can reach sensitive systems or data. Restricting unnecessary privileges limits what an attacker may be able to do after gaining access.
Rank #3
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required

5. Keep protected backups and practice restoring them
Maintain recovery copies that attackers cannot easily alter through the same account or system used for day-to-day work. Test restoring important data and services, not just whether a backup job reports success. A recovery plan is useful only if someone knows how to use it and the restored systems are usable.
6. Verify urgent or unusual requests through a separate channel
AI can help make deceptive messages more fluent and personalized. Treat unexpected payment changes, credential requests and unusual instructions as reasons to pause, even when a message sounds polished or seems to come from someone familiar. Confirm the request using contact details you already trust—not a link or phone number supplied in the message.
7. Monitor accounts, devices and important services
Make sure suspicious activity can be seen and that alerts reach someone who can investigate and act. Organizations should check whether critical events—such as unexpected sign-ins, changes to privileged access or security alerts from important services—are visible to the people responsible for handling them. Monitoring without an owner or response path is not a complete control.

8. Rehearse incident response
Decide in advance who can isolate an affected device or system, preserve relevant evidence, contact the right people and begin recovery. Practice those responsibilities so that an actual incident does not depend on improvisation under pressure. CISA’s JCDC AI Cybersecurity Collaboration Playbook describes voluntary information-sharing processes among participating partners about AI-related cybersecurity incidents and vulnerabilities; it does not make participation mandatory or establish that every reader can join.

Help employees and family members recognize high-pressure requests, verify unusual instructions and report suspicious messages without delay. Give them a clear reporting route and explain what information to include. In organizations, training should reflect people’s actual responsibilities, particularly for those who develop, manage or operate AI systems.
10. Secure AI systems throughout their lifecycle
If your organization develops, procures or operates AI, include security in design, model and data choices, system integration, deployment and ongoing operation. Consider the AI system and its surrounding services together: access, data handling and operational responsibilities all matter. CISA and UK NCSC describe their joint secure-development guidance as applying to all types of AI systems—not only frontier models. It is aimed principally at providers and also addresses stakeholders who make design and operational decisions.

What should organizations do beyond individual account security?
Organizations need to connect technical controls to ownership and action. Assign responsibility for patching, access reviews, monitoring, backup restoration and incident decisions. For systems that use AI, make security expectations part of procurement and design as well as deployment and ongoing operation; a model’s security cannot be considered in isolation from the services, data and people around it.
CISA’s and UK NCSC’s joint guidance is intended for developers, managers, decision-makers and risk owners. CISA says the guidance applies to all types of AI systems, not just frontier models. That makes it relevant to the people choosing, integrating or operating AI systems as well as those building them.

Start with the controls that reduce common routes into accounts and systems, then make sure you can detect, respond to and recover from problems. For a person or small organization, a sensible first pass is:
- Protect access: enable MFA on important accounts and stop reusing passwords.
- Reduce exposure: patch devices and internet-facing services, and remove unnecessary access.
- Slow down deception: verify unusual requests using a known, separate contact method.
- Plan for disruption: maintain protected backups, test a restoration and agree who responds to an incident.
- Add AI-specific responsibility: if you develop, procure or operate AI, identify who owns security decisions across its lifecycle.
This is a prioritization sequence, not a guarantee against compromise. The appropriate implementation depends on which accounts, systems and data you rely on and who is responsible for maintaining them.
