It can matter—even when viewers enjoy the character. Olivia Moore’s account of creating Janie, a fictional AI-generated TikTok personality, suggests that people may keep watching after they realize a creator is artificial. Her argument is that disclosure still matters: it tells viewers what they are responding to and lets them judge the human choices behind the work.
Who was Janie, and what happened on TikTok?
Janie was a fictional 19-year-old prospective sorority member created by Olivia Moore for a TikTok experiment during Alabama’s Bama Rush week. In an August 18, 2026 article for Andreessen Horowitz, Moore describes the experiment herself, so its view counts, labeling outcomes and audience reactions are her reported observations—not independently verified platform analytics or enforcement records.

Moore says she began with an image generated using ChatGPT, then used Minimax 3 for speaking clips, Grok Imagine 1.5 for dancing and soundless clips, and ElevenLabs for sound effects. She did not mark Janie’s posts as AI-generated; she wanted to see how many TikTok would label on its own. These are the tools Moore says she used at the time, not a guide to their current features, access or terms.

According to Moore, Janie’s first video received almost 100,000 views, and TikTok labeled eight of the character’s 20 videos “Contains AI-generated media.” Moore says those labels had no visible effect on performance or comments. She also recounts a separate warning about a fictional “Skirt Shop” sponsorship: TikTok objected because the ad was undisclosed, she says, rather than because the videos were identified as AI.

How did viewers respond when they suspected AI?
Moore says viewers spotted inconsistencies, including dresser drawers that changed between clips and shirt lettering that could not be read. Some criticized Janie; others accepted that she was artificial, followed the storyline and offered creative feedback. Moore describes the audience as becoming more engaged once the fiction was apparent.
That is one creator’s account, not evidence that audiences generally respond well to undisclosed or disclosed AI content. Moore also reports that nearly 90,000 viewers watched the prior year’s reveal that her earlier character, Tinsley, was AI. Both figures are reported by Moore; the article does not provide an independent dataset or a controlled audience study.

What changed between Tinsley and Janie?
Moore compares two characters she created, rather than testing disclosure strategies under controlled conditions. In her account, Tinsley’s 2025 videos looked more visibly artificial, and her face and voice varied between clips. Janie appeared more consistent from video to video. Moore’s comparison suggests that improved continuity can make a fictional character more convincing, but it does not establish how every audience will react to realistic AI characters.

Why disclosure can matter even if the content is enjoyable
Moore’s answer is not that an artificial character cannot entertain people. She acknowledges that viewers may enjoy a story while knowing its central figure is fictional. Her concern is the missing context when a creator conceals AI: audiences may believe they are seeing a person’s unassisted performance, or may not know what kind of creative work they are evaluating.

For Moore, disclosing AI use can shift attention from whether a person is real to what the human creator contributed: the idea, the choices and the care involved in making it. She writes, “When creators hide the tools, people experience AI as a trick.” That is her interpretation of the social stakes, not an official platform rule or a measured conclusion about AI’s broader effects.
Her analogy is a reproduction of a painting: she would buy one if she knew it was not the original. The distinction is not simply whether AI was involved, but whether viewers were given enough information to understand what they were seeing and decide what they value about it.

What the Janie experiment can—and cannot—show
- It can illustrate: a fictional AI character can attract views, draw comments and sustain a storyline, according to its creator.
- It can illustrate: viewers may notice visual inconsistencies and still choose to engage after recognizing the character is artificial.
- It cannot establish: that disclosure never affects reach, that most viewers are comfortable with AI creators, or that TikTok will label other creators’ posts in the same way.
- It cannot establish: a general production cost or time requirement. Moore says her experiment used $100 in credits and took about thirty minutes a day; those are her estimates for this project, not a typical budget or workflow.
Moore also mentions Seedance 2.5 at $2–5 for an eight-second clip in her article. That is a price reported at publication, not a verified current rate, and it should not be treated as a stable or broadly comparable production cost.
