AI Course Sign-Ups Remain High as Coursera Reports Growth in Micro-Credentials

Coursera’s reports show sustained GenAI learning and growing Professional Certificate enrollment, but annual counts, cumulative totals, and survey findings measure different things.

Coursera’s reports show substantial demand for generative AI (GenAI) learning and career-oriented credentials, but their figures use different periods and measures. Its 2025 annual filing counted 5.0 million GenAI enrollments during the year, while a June 2025 announcement cited more than 8 million cumulative enrollments. Coursera’s June 2026 announcement, meanwhile, said its Entry-Level Professional Certificate portfolio had passed 20 million cumulative enrollments. These figures indicate activity on the platform; they do not by themselves establish course completion, job placement, or the effect of a credential on hiring.

What Coursera’s numbers say about GenAI course demand

Coursera published two distinct measures of GenAI activity for 2025, and the sources do not reconcile them. They should be read in their own reporting contexts, not combined into a single trend line.

Source and measure Reported figure How to read it
Coursera’s June 4, 2025 Global Skills Report announcement More than 8 million total GenAI enrollments; 195% year-over-year growth; an average of 12 enrollments per minute in 2025 across nearly 700 courses The announcement describes a cumulative total and a report snapshot. It does not provide a reconciliation with the annual figure in Coursera’s later filing. Coursera’s 2025 Global Skills Report announcement
Coursera’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026 5.0 million GenAI enrollments during calendar 2025; 15 enrollments per minute in 2025, compared with 8 per minute in 2024 This is the annual-report measure for 2025. The filing does not explain how it relates to the June announcement’s cumulative total. Coursera’s 2025 Form 10-K

Both reports point to meaningful GenAI learning activity on Coursera, but the different totals and rates are not directly comparable without a definition of their scopes. An enrollment is not necessarily a unique learner, a course completion, or evidence that a learner gained a particular skill.

Professional Certificate enrollment is also growing

Coursera’s 2025 Form 10-K reported 6.0 million Professional Certificate enrollments during calendar 2025, up 22% from 2024. That annual figure covers Professional Certificates generally; it is distinct from the cumulative totals Coursera has published for its Entry-Level Professional Certificate portfolio.

In its June 4, 2025 Global Skills Report announcement, Coursera said the Entry-Level Professional Certificate portfolio had more than 15.4 million enrollments and reported 195% annual growth for that portfolio. In June 2026, the company said cumulative enrollments in the portfolio had exceeded 20 million and its enrollment rate had grown 32% year over year. These are company-reported portfolio measures from different publication points, not interchangeable with the annual 6.0 million figure.

Coursera also reported 13,500-plus courses and 185-plus certificates in its catalog as of December 31, 2025. Those catalog counts describe available digital learning products, not enrollment or completion outcomes. The 2025 Form 10-K provides the annual enrollment and catalog context.

What Coursera’s 2026 micro-credentials survey found

Coursera’s June 2026 announcement of its Micro-Credentials Impact Report described a global survey of more than 3,500 learners, employers, and higher education leaders. The survey asked about perceptions and reported practices; its findings are not independent proof that micro-credentials cause better hiring or salary outcomes.

  • Coursera said 94% of surveyed employers were willing to offer higher starting salaries to graduates with micro-credentials.
  • It said 92% of surveyed employers reported that entry-level hires with micro-credentials performed better in their first year.
  • The announcement said 82% of surveyed employers placed greater value on credentials developed with industry partners than on credentials developed solely by academic institutions.
  • Coursera also described employer preferences for applied, project- or industry-based assessment and differences in reported salary increases between credit-bearing and non-credit credentials. The announcement does not establish a universal salary premium.

These percentages describe respondents’ answers, not observed outcomes across all employers or graduates. Marni Baker Stein, Coursera’s chief content officer, summarized the employer findings in the announcement: “Our global survey finds that 94% of employers are willing to offer higher starting salaries to graduates with micro-credentials, while 92% of employers say entry-level hires with micro-credentials perform better in their first year on the job.” Read the survey context in Coursera’s Micro-Credentials Impact Report announcement.

Why the newer Coursera-Udemy figures are a different measure

Some 2026 platform-wide figures cover combined Coursera and Udemy activity, rather than Coursera alone. Coursera’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter said year-to-date learners across both platforms were enrolling in GenAI content at more than 45 per minute, compared with 25 per minute in 2025, under a unified methodology. That combined metric should not be presented as a Coursera-only rate.

Similarly, Coursera’s 2026 Global Skills Report describes an analysis of more than 300 million learners across 98 countries on the combined Coursera-Udemy platforms. It is broader in scope than a Coursera-only enrollment statistic. The report also emphasizes the practical importance of checking AI-generated answers: Josh Pasek, a University of Michigan professor and data/AI leader, notes that AI can sound authoritative even when its output is unreliable. What learners can take from the trend

The enrollment figures are useful as a signal of platform demand, not a shortcut for choosing a course or predicting a career result. A learner comparing a GenAI course or professional certificate can check:

  • What the credential teaches: Look for specific skills and tools rather than relying on a broad “AI” label.
  • How learning is assessed: Applied projects or practical assessments can show work completed, although a certificate alone does not guarantee proficiency.
  • Whether the credential fits the goal: Check whether it is designed for beginners, tied to a particular role, or offers academic credit where relevant.
  • What outcomes are actually documented: Platform enrollments and employer survey responses are not the same as verified completion, hiring, or salary data.

Coursera’s January 2026 Job Skills Report announcement separately drew on nearly six million professionally motivated enterprise learners and more than 7,000 institutional customers. In that specific report context, it cited 14 GenAI enrollments per minute and average Professional Certificate enrollment growth of 91% across the career areas analyzed. Those cohort-specific findings should not be generalized to all Coursera learners. Coursera’s 2026 Job Skills Report announcement gives the scope.
